I have a feeling (rightly or wrongly) that Ashlynn is better with Cygnar units, over Protectorate. Would I be right? Also, what are the best combinations at the moment? Is it Trenchers + Stormblades, Trenchers + Stormlances etc? I'm not well up on Cygnar in general so would appreciate some guidance.

Quick answer would be yes; general consensus has been favoring Cygnar and your aforementioned units. Some searching on Google, Facebook, DiscountGames, Conflict Chamber events, and Youtube will confirm.
So are you asking if she's "actually" better with Cygnar? Maybe. More games and results will tell. But she's favored with them at the moment.

Yes, she is much more favored to be with Cygnar units as a whole, but there are people (like myself) that run her with Protectorate units. I personally use Daughters and Flame Bringrers with her. We have others in my Meta that are using Choir and Knights Exemplar with her. But then there are the Trencher people out there too.
Currently, yes, Cygnar is more popular. After the Exemplar CID, that might change.

Just checking - can you run two of the same unit in the Llaelese theme? For example two units of Storm Lances. Or must they be two different units?

Cygnar Resistance almost always takes max Trenchers + UA for cloud wall cheese with Gibbs.
I'm using either Gun Mages + UA (marshaling a Vanguard) or max Stormlances for my second Cygnar unit, currently. Though I'll likely be picking up Stormblades + 3x WA + UA to play around with as well.

I've heard of others using Sword Knights and Storm Guard recently. But they are in very specific applications and game plans.

I really want to like her with Menoth units, but so far it's been all Cygnar for me. She's kinda gross with Trenchers. Stormlances have proved underwhelming for me so far. Might need to look into alternatives, but Gun Mages feels lackluster. Fighting the urge to go full on double trencher...

Cleansers are hilarious with her, but they'll be effectively removed from the game if the immunity changes go through.

I trialled one game with her using Trencher Infantry and Storm Lances, felt Good. Also having a bunch of solos with vet leader and repo 3 was great

The saddest thing with Ashlynn is you cannot put out all your upkeep turn 1

Stormlances have proved underwhelming for me so far. Might need to look into alternatives, but Gun Mages feels lackluster. Can you explain why you feel this way? Where are the Stormlances not performing as well as you'd like? I can't see how taking one of the best cavalry units in the game can be a bad thing. As for Gun Mages, I feel they open up game into cryx (heavy incorp) and their shot types also give them a chance to put decent damage on armored targets by crit fishing for Brutal Damage shots on feat turn. Thunderbolts from Gun Mages and Gallows from Ashlynn can also open assassination opportunities and create positioning nightmares for your opponent.

The saddest thing with Ashlynn is you cannot put out all your upkeep turn 1 You dont really need all 3 on T1, though. Admonition is great, but only useful T1 if you're going 2nd. Chosen Ground is amazing, but not necessary if you're not stomping through forests. Really, Quicken for Trenchers seems to be the only must-cast T1 upkeep.

I am debating whether to just take a min unit of trenchers just for a sacrificial cloud wall, and put quicken on the storm lances instead as it increases their threat to 15" for the mid game. Also with a full unit of trenchers and UA, I found it a pain for them not to be in the way of other stuff, what do you think?
