For someone new to the game and starting with Cygnar I would recommend keeping them playing Heavy Metal for a decent while, and then once they have a better grasp of the game think about what other theme they want to explore. The great thing about Heavy Metal is all the jacks are eligible in the other themes, so it is a good investment building up your stable of available jacks. Just please keep them away from Longgunners and pre-cursors I really like this. It also allows him to experiment with different combinations of warjacks and really feel out what kinds he likes, which can lend themselves to other themes and casters in an organic way. I also agree that, absent the above, you try and help him shape his own preferences rather than shape them. I have a friend of my own who plays Cygnar a tiny bit, though he's usually a 40K player. He's ALL about the trenchers. So my only recommendations were notifying him of certain casters and warjacks that function well in gravediggers.
