We have such a solid stable of generic Warjacks that it's difficult to go wrong. If I had to start buying into Cygnar again, I'd consider the following 'jacks essential (in no particular order): - Chargers - Fireflies - Ironclads - Stormclads - Centurions I own multiples of all of the above and they see a lot of use in all my lists. Character 'jacks are also something we're spoilt for choice with. If I had to buy, let's say 3, again, it would be Ol'Rowdy, Dynamo and Thorn - in that order.

Centurions, Stormclads, Ironclads, Fireflies and Chargers are all staples in a lot of lists, so you can't really go wrong in buying them (expecially if you magnetize the Ironclad and Centurion kit to have access also to the other 4 jacks included). For colossals, wait for the Hurricane to be released in few weeks and magnetize it too so you also have the Stormwall. About Characters, you should really just buy the ones of the casters you play, since with the new Theme forces playing them without their casters is difficult. The most common in competitive lists are Dynamo (Nemos), Thorn (Haleys) and Ol'Rowdy (Strykers). The only ecception is Thunderhead. You can play it in any list and with any caster, so if you like him feel free to pick him without worries.

Keep in mind that Trenchers cannot be taken in either of Cygnar's predominant Theme Forces.

The Defender is going to be one of the staples you'll use, along with the Ironclad. They come on the same chassis, so I'd get a kit or two and magnetize them. The hunter is also nice, and is a cheaper alternative to the Defender, but while it gains Pathfinder and Advanced deployment along with the improved control range, it doesn't hit or take a hit anywhere near as hard. I tend to put mine with Jr, unless I'm running Sloan or Kraye (those repositioning yo-yo hunters are outright hilarious.) I've found that the Centurion is extremely slow for an otherwise very fast army. Some people love it, I'm iffy on it. The Stormclad will be one of the heaviest hitters you've got as far as Warjacks go, and you'll want at least one Storm Knight model for the free focus. If you're not using Maddox as your caster, the Stormblade Captain is the cheapest way to get that free focus.

Keep in mind that Trenchers cannot be taken in either of Cygnar's predominant Theme Forces. Who cares? Storm Division without Storm Lances is a pure garbage, and if you want to use Storm Lances it is unlikely to also add Trencher Infantry. Trencher Infantry are not so work well with many jacks either so Heavy Metal is not a mandatory choice either. Although they do like them because of their regiment's lack of anti armor solution.

What's your point? Mine is that Trenchers are a sub-optimal purchase if you plan on playing competitively, because the vast majority of competitive lists use our Theme Forces. Your points is that... Storm Lances are good? Heavy Metal uses jacks? I think staying out of the Theme Forces so that you can play Trenchers is a pretty awful decision, unless you think they're also worth the 8-18 free points you get in the Themes.

I doubt the usefulness of the free points at the first place.... Although you can play with more points, the restricted list itself is also a drawback as well. For example, both theme bans Arcane Tempest Rifleman and Rhupert Carvolo, and Storm Division can't use Archduke Runewood as well. Throw away the opportunity to give Concealment, Tough or Pathfinder on Storm Lances, stand up after Tough roll and allow to charge, cause 3 damage per each turns by only spend 4 points seems not an excuse for having some extra inferior models. And, although Storm Lances are the best choice for the general lists, Trencher Infantry is good against gunlines, so in some matchups they are even competitiv3 over lances.
