Really looking forward to putting this guy on the table in irregulars and llaelese. Was wondering how everyone else is playing him. Been seeing alot of lists with trenchers and stormlances.
Idea is put lifebound on halberdiers allowing gastone and mariners to be safe and play aggressively. Halbadiers allow mariners to fire. Dauntless can go on gastone as extra insurance. Lots of shooting from idrians, nyss hunters, and artillery. Ghost walk to grant pathfinder and prevent jamming.
Much like you I put Lifebound on the Halbs so that the jacks and Gastonne can play further forward than normal. Dauntless Resolve goes on one of the Idrian units, though in certain match ups I might end up putting Dauntless on one Idrian unit and Lifebound on the other and playing the Lifebound unit super aggressively, forcing them down my opponent's throat so that they have little choice but to give me souls.
The battlegroup is intended to do two things - cost as few actual army points as possible while still bringing highly focus efficient high POW attacks to deal with tougher targets that Idrians and Halbs can't handle. I can see the argument for 3x Nomads but I'd rather save those 3 points and spend them elsewhere.
The double Eliminators are really annoying for most opponents and are a steal for 10 points. I don't have a really specific game plan with them except to use them to jam, kill vulnerable models and be far more irritating than their points cost suggests.
Aiyana & Holt help the list deal damage to tougher targets and can hand out Magic Weapons. Lynus & Edrea are mainly in the list to bring some niche anti-cloud wall tech in the form of Edrea's Wind Burst. One can easily run an Idrian or a Halb into a cloud and then Edrea can shoot it in the back which may prove to be really useful tech against Haley3. Lynus can give Gastonne Applied Knowledge as well which is pretty awesome!
The part of the list I'm most undecided on are solos. Reinholdt and Anastasia are there to stay. One buffs Gastonne hugely and the other is just excellent - Ambush, +1 to go first and backstab? Don't have to twist my arm! Eilish seems like a natural choice since he can make Gastonne able to more reliably contribute especially on Death Dealer turns where you're typically trying to pull significantly ahead on attrition if not win the game outright, but it doesn't seem like he contributes much else. Eiryss1 is the model I'm most likely to swap for something else. She's always nice to have but I wonder if Gibbs wouldn't be better overall by giving Gastonne reposition or if maybe a solo like Orin, Ragman or Kell might prove to be more valuable.

i discovered that if you put life bound on press gangers and dauntless on the mutineers you can have a 4+ tough no knock down bubble surrounded by shield guards. and it comes back!
i call it ghost fleet!
its really bad into band of heroes. fine otherwise. alexia1 was in there at 1 point but she rarely gets much done

lifebound on halberdiers, dauntless on forge guard. took down old witch 3 and kolgrima twice with this. Got whupped by harkevich. nothing remarkable. it should lose to kolgrima but i clocked her once and pulled a jank assassination that won't work twice

this i just built and have not tried. zealots are the best lifebound target. choir makes the jacks shoot hard and crosse makes them shoot far. shield guards galore but i have my doubts.
overall, crosse2 has issues with threat ranges on his infantry and soul denial from savvy opponents. hus infantry support is average or worse and his jack support is average or worse. i want him to be my main caster but in nearly 20 games games he feels weaker than our best
What about Hutchuck? More ambushing and the knockdown/brain damage threat seems real enough. As for the Eilish replacement, I think he and Orin fit into the same spot pretty well. Eilish has support to make you better and the upkeep removal, while Orin is more offensively inclined, which might not be as needed. I would consider keeping Eilish.
EDIT: Oh, and from personal experience, don't play him with Bastions or Cinerators until after we see what happens to them in the Exemplar CID.
shoe that pressganger list is cool and looks proper annoying as Firetruck. Very nice. I'd borrow it but it has a lot of stuff i don't own and wouldn't otherwise use. ---
I'll post the stuff i've been playing with , but its very similar to what y'all are doing.
OK: here goes - three quick disclaimers. I only play in local steamrollers these days, but I have regionally active friends that i try to attempt to be a good opponent for so their weekly-ish games with me are not a waste for them. That said, some of these may appear SR weak or weakish, if so that's why. Next, Eilish is not in any list as i dont' own him b/c i'm stubborn and didn't want to buy NQP. Finally, i lost both my buccaneers, that's why you don't see any, i haven't gotten around to buying them again.
That said:
Mercenary Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] The Irregulars
The first list is admittedly a little funky, unorthodox, as it doesn't run the cheap lifebound target most Crosse lists will have ; but the crawler brings a lot of nice things to the table, is a big brick capable of putting out potentially nice damage in that list, and is a fantastic proximity pseudo-target for Death Field. It also removes additional stealth, protects ragman from blasts (only used if there's no bounces on the table), and poops out forgeguard.
The Kayazy get Lifebound and the guard get dauntless. I sometimes swap out the inquisitor for either Taryn or Gorman. They all bring good stuff to the table and no matter who i take i find myself wanting what the other two bring. Weaknesses are i need to actively put the kayazy in a place where they both threaten and will get killed a bit, and if the opponent has difficulty with killing them then i can find myself soul starved which can lead to over-aggressive play with Crosse. Also list allows no Eliminators, boo.
The Kayazy can hit pretty hard if i can bring either (or if i live the dream, both) of the damage buffs to bear, particularly on Kill stroke turn. They benefit very little from the feat, so i ocassionally swap them out for idrians in some games and downshift some things to free up the point required to get the Guide / chief.
Considering dropping the third nomad for a swap to Halberdiers, but in this list, i've enjoyed the table presence / interdiction ability of a third heavy that wants to get up close. I think the other two are pretty much meat and potatoes.
Tried using the galleon in the list as a straight swap for the battlegroup and there just wasn't enough table presence. It is pretty fun though dragging something in while under Death Field and just smashing it to smithereens. Problem is you do that basically once and then the Galleon gets killed.
I have a ton of other lists with him. Crosse2 is what got me re-interested in the game again, i think he's a lot of fun even if he's not as strong as Thexus, Mags2, Ossrum, etc.
Holy Zealots and LifeBound is the perfect match, Knight Exemplar with Dauntless are also good choice. When you have Galleon that shot shoot 16" and pull 12" everything will targeting it, so I simply split my zealots, shield guard and Jam as much as I can, and make sure Gastone are full load of the soul. Once they are jammed, feat/ghostwalk to moveout and bomb, shoot with Gastone, & Galleon, if your enemy still there, let the knight complete their job.
