I play casual Protectorate against family and friends. I have not ventured into the local meta, as it is just a few very competitive players who will punish anybody who doesn't play the game their way. Our family group is upgrading their armies, so I need to get my Protectorate Army in gear. I have just started a fairly serious Circle army which will see a lot of play against Menoth too. Often I end up playing a game against somebody who doesn't have an army with them, so I supply both sides. I try to keep a couple of fairly balanced armies for those games. I will be facing Cathie's Cygnar, which will be getting some kind of new ranged units soon, and the Daughters have Khador, Skorne and Trollbloods. (And maybe Cryx soon)
The Circle army is getting pretty nasty, with Bloodtrackers, Skinwalkers (With an Alpha) and uses Tanith as the main caster. Kaya 1 and Kromac Champion of the Wurm are the other casters. It features a lot of Warpwolves of all three types and Woldwyrds. It also has Ghetorix and will be picking up Loki and Kaya 2 with Laris soon. I don't know if Wurmwood is in the cards or not. I need to bring my Menoth up to par before I buy any more Circle. The Khador army one of our Daughters runs is based on Sorscha with a lot of Doomreavers, Winter Guard, Assassins and Kayazi eliminators. She is a pretty aggressive, but smart player, hitting hard, playing the attrition game, but ready to kill you caster if you make a slip up. I don't know exactly what Skorne and Trollblood casters I will have to face, but I know those two will step up and do whatever it takes to beat their Sister's Khador. (There is nothing like having competitive triplets to make game night a scary place!)
We started with the Mk.II two player battlebox with Menoth and Amy's Khador. I have added on the new battlebox, Choir, a couple more light jacks and the All in one box. I also have just bought command attachments for the Exemplars and Errants. My stash is as follows.
Casters. High Exemplar Kreoss, Malekus the Burning Truth, Vice Scrutator Vindictus.
Light Jacks. 2 each, Repentor, Redeemer, Revenger
Heavy Jacks. Crusader, Vanquisher, a Castigator with magnets and two Castigator/Sanctifier/Reckoner models with magnets.
Solo Visgoth Juviah Rhoven and Honor Guard
Units
ExemplarCinerators
Choir of Menoth
Exemplar Errants and Command Attachment
Knights Exemplar and Command Attachment
I am looking for another caster that would work well with this mishmash of units and jacks. I will also pick up another couple of jacks and another unit as needed to make a decent list. I think I want to go with lots of fire and continuous flame to deal with the infidels that run the heathen armies in the house. (Nothing says, "Good Parenting" like cremating your teenage Daughter's caster and looking her in the eye while saying, "Just as in real life, this is for your own good!") Seriously, Menoth has some good flame lists and it is a bit of an inside joke and source of good competitive fun in the house. I also like the control aspect of Menoth. Right now, my army has some fire and some conventional firepower, along with some control. As the other armies ramp up, I might need to specialize a bit more. In general, does Menoth work best with a dedicated fire caster, or is the balanced army valid in highly competitive games too?
I am thinking of one of the Feoras. Khador and Cygnar have a lot of infantry to roast, but the Skorne and Trollbloods are more beast oriented and the Circle army is too. Which one would be best overall? I would want one that can spread some fire around, but still has enough buffs and debuffs to make for a decent battle against other types of lists. I was going to get another fiery unit like Daughters, but I also want another conventional unit for when I face big beast lists. What units and jacks would give me the ability to adapt my lists without having to buy two completely separate armies? Should I give up on the idea of a fire and brimstone list, or should I just get the models for both types of lists?
Thanks for the advice. I am liking the advice I got from the Circle players, but now my prized Menoth army needs to play catch up!
