I finally got to play Siege2 against my Cryx buddy! Lists:
Siege 2 in Storm Division with:
- Triumph, Ironclad, Squire
Stormstrider
2x full Stormblades
Stormblade Captain
Jr + Firefly
Rhupert
Scaverous in Black Industries with:
- Deathjack, 2 Slayers, 2 Reapers, 3 Arcnodes
Withershadow Combine
2 Warwitch Sirens
Cephalyx Overlords
2 Soul Harvester
I was excited for this game, for a couple reasons: My buddy is a blast to play with, we both only play fully painted (though I had to proxy one Stormblade CA with the Swordknight CA), I had painted up 12 new dudes just for this game, and this would be my first time putting Siege2 on the table.
I won the starting roll and advance moved my Stormblades. One unit got Pathfinder from Rhupert, and Arcane Shield. I measured that I would get my first line of Stormblades into range of his nasty sprays if I used all my movement, and decided that would be worth it to apply pressure. I minifeated both units and feated with Siege, putting two units of Stormblades at the 25” line with 16/18 and 16/21, tough.
My opponent decided he was having none of that and moved all his shit back.
Well, that was dumb of me. Mental note for my next game: stagger the feat and minifeats, it’s far too easy for an opponent to move out of the stormblades threat range and just wait them out, especially since I wouldn’t be able to score in my turn. I now shuffled my dudes on the right back out of Spray threat.
With most Stormblades out of range, he only killed three on the left flank. He does some TK shenanigans, lining the Ironclad and a Reaper up so that he could Harpoon him into melee. But with sucky rolls his Reaper jack AND a slayer only cut off the Ironclads hammer-arm. We score to 1-1.
Turn 3! I figured pressing an early scenario advantage would be my best course of action. The left Stormblade unit charged a ‘jack and the objective, respectively damaging and destroying. On my right flank, Siege finally handed out Fury to the other Stormblade unit, who charged the arcnode and the Slayer in the zone, making sure to keep all models in the round zone. I hit the arcnode with the assault shot form one gunner, making the other two hit automatically and almost killing it with these alone, while I left the Reaper on 5 boxes. The Ironclad then had to finish the Reaper instead of advancing into the enemy as planned. Triumph shot the Soul Trapper who was contesting the right zone. I score the right zone, my zone, the objective and go to 4-1. Picture taken during the round.
My buddys turn 3. After charging, my Stormblades are nicely clumped and at 12/15, prime spray fodder. He feats. Commence the slaughter. Scaverous, with 3 souls from earlier, goes in and threshers (“he can DO that?”) the ironclad and 3 Stormblades. Deathjack ports him back. Now the sprays start. After the dust is settled, I am left with a SINGLE Stormblade (from two whole units who had lost 3 models up to that point) who is knocked down with a toe in the left zone. Two Slayer trampled into my zone. He scores to 4-2. I knew the spray orgy was coming, and accepted that I’d suffer heavy losses in the right zone, but the amount of murder just 5 models with sprays can put out still took me by surprise.
I measure out if I can get siege into assassination range, but I’m short. A scenario win would require 3 CP, but I don’t have enough models/attacks to clear all the zones, so I concentrate on two of them. With Triumph, the stormblade captain and Siege, I clear my zone and take out his arc node (after using battering ram to nudge his Slayer into his left arcnode so I could attack both), but I leave Siege exposed, figuring there’s not much left for me to do. I forget to move Triumph into my bottom zone because I’m an idiot, but at least deny his zone with my firefly and score 1 with the last stormblade in the left infantry zone to 5-2.
Arcane shield is up on Siege, and he’s at 14/21, 1 camp, 18 boxes and tough. I also had Rhupert sing him a nice song about using concealment effectively. Still, there’s no way I’m gonna survive this. My buddy TKs the Firefly out of the way and goes in with his jack. Does 7 damage on the charge, I use my focus. Now comes Scaverous, with rerolls from souls and whatnot. He does… 1 damage. Rerolls… one damage. Okay! Next attack, same thing. Next attack, he finally rolls big and does 9 boxes, forcing a tough roll which I make. But he’s got focus left to buy and boost a last attack, which puts Siege2 in the dirt.
A fun and well-fought game. I’m going to play Siege2 a couple more times, he seems like he’s got quite a few cool options. I learned that razor wall does not grant cover as I thought, but he’s still pretty tough, especially with arcane shield. I'm probably going to replace the Stormblade Captain with Acosta - he can be more problematic and punish my opponent for killing Stormblades, while I didn't have much need for Tactician (much more important with Stormlances, in my opinion).
