If the turds were to hold an election, he would be King Turd for Life and enshrined upon a certain throne...

Nah. He's good. And damn fun to play. Better question is are we taking the cygnar or merc list version?

Warmachine Trivia: Caine3 once sat for a portrait. It is now used as the poop emoji on cellphones worldwide.

I still feel like Galleon double mariner\rover could work.

I like Galleon and two Vanguards as a battlegroup. Pair it with Aiyana & Holt and some infantry and you're in business.
It's not a great army but it has some match ups that it really likes to see (Circle, Protectorate) and it has at least a puncher's chance at an assassination against pretty much everything. It can definitely work as part of a list pair.
The real problem is that Caine3 doesn't have enough WJP, and Vanguards and the Galleon are overpriced, so you're playing about 10 points down. Then when you go up against all of those lovely theme forces you end up 25 points down. Delightful.
I've given up taking tournaments seriously until Mercenaries get theme forces for the warcasters I like that allow the kinds of armies I want to play.

I'm really liking Caine3, but really he is so limited in his Merc options.
He is waaay better in Cygnar where you have some different options. Things like Calamity and Sword Knights in the Heavy Metal Theme force, we just don't have those kind of options.

I dig him. Galleon is a must. The rest is all flavor. I'm currently running:
Caine and crew Reinholt Galleon Max idrians with UA Aiyana and Holt DSM Dougal PEiryss Tayrn
It's all in on assassination. I bottom of two killed mordikaar sitting behind despoiler on three fury at an SR this past weekend.

I still feel like Galleon double mariner\rover could work. Well, I've tried a Galleon + 1 Rover BG + Nyss hunters + an Ogrun Bokur for extra protection, against a Butcher2 + Victor + Ruin + Marauder BG + Gun carriage list, it failed big time. The Nysses + Ryan and Watts were dead at the start of the second turn, there was no chance to land a casterkill, (Butcher was too far, and anything else had blast damage immunity, or so much ARM it doesn't cares) so I put decent damage on the Battle Engine and destroyed the Marauder, but then the Ruin one-shotted Caine. If I could manage to get Caine beyond the Ruin's reach, he just one-round the Galleon, and then I have nothing, so I fail to see how could I turn the match to my favor.

The first thing to do would be to keep Caine out of Ruin's threat range. Ruin has an 11" threat with Butcher2 (I believe) and Caine3 shoots 12" with Flicker to back him up. There's no real reason to ever let Ruin get to Caine unless things have gone horribly wrong (and maybe they did in your case).
The second thing would be to keep things well away from the Gun Carriage. Sure, it threatens a far distance but not that much further than your Nyss. Run over to the opposite side of the board if you need to, because your goal in this matchup is to land a telling alpha strike. With so few pieces on the board the player who hits hard first wins, and that means denying your opponent the alpha just as much as seeking it out yourself. With Calamity and the good guns in your battle group it should be pretty easy to kill the Gun Carriage even if it hangs back.
