As I try to get better at the game and slowly begin to attend more tournaments I was looking for ways to better my game tactically and so I decided that the best way for me to do that would be to write up reports of my matches so that I can read over them and can reflect over what went wrong and what went right. They won’t be the highest quality but I hope I can learn from this process and maybe some of you can too. Sadly I don't have pictures for this one but now that I've decided to do this hopefully Ill have some for next time.
Match One: Vyros1 vs. Saeryn1
Vyros - 28
- Manticore x2
- Griffon x4
- Chimera
Mage Hunter Strike Force
- Eiryss 3
- Soulless Escort x2
Narn, Mage Hunter of Ios
Arcanist x2
-Bunker
Saeryn - 28
- Succubus
- Typhon
- Carnivean
- Scythean
- Seraph
Strider Deathstalker
Forsaken x2
Shepherd x2
Strider Blightblades
So the idea of the list was to skirmish with the strike force for a while on the approach then have enough of them alive in the end to trigger feat. A lot of people run infiltrators in a list like this but 1. I don't have them yet and 2. I actually really like strike force I have yet to feel that one SPD make a difference and the extra round of shots I feel is really worth it. As for the battle group the Chimera is there to arc strangleholds and everything else is to take advantage of the feat. Griffons are great combat lights that can really do well on the one focus from power up and the Manticores are my heavy hitters with 4 P+S 20 attacks with MAT 8 Weapons masters can scrap most anything they get to not to mention they are cheep and have a solid ranged potential as well. Arcanists are in there because thats how ret works and Narn is in there to take out any high priority solos or to be an emergency flank triggerer. Personally the soulless are in there because I don't own a third arcanist nor do I own any of our 3pt solos so I just had to try and fill it out with what I had.
Pre-game: The scenario was Extraction and I won the roll so decided to choose table edge. There was a really nicely placed wall right next to the objective so I really wanted to take advantage of it. The deployment zone was a little restricted on that side by a forest and a small house but with Mobility and innate pathfinder on a lot of my stuff I didn't think it would be a problem. As for deployment I placed my strike force centrally with Vyros and the 2 manticores behind, flanked on one side by 2 griffons and the chimera and everything else on the other side.
Top of Round 1: So for his turn he walked up, cast Respawn on Typhon, Banishing Ward on the Carnivean, and slipstreamed for the extra board space. That was basically all it.
Bottom of Round 1: So my turn I used apparition on the Chimera allocated none then went. Chimera run up to next to the right flag in a patch of rough terrain and cover. All of the griffons run up the board fanning out. Manticores moved up behind and placed down covering fire templates. They didn't do much but they did keep his death stalkers away form my strike force for a turn so thats nice. Stikeforce took some shots doing a few points off of the beast and Eiryss stripped 3 or so fury form Carnivean dropping spiny growth and banishing ward. Vyros didn't cast mobility as I felt the extra two inches of board space wouldn't do me much good but he did throw out 2 strangleholds are completely flopped on both of them. Camping 2
Top of Round 2: So I get charged, deal a little bit to Typhon from the covering fire, but all in all from his 4 heavies I only lose a griffon, a half of another, and about 3 strike force so all in all thats a win. Also Saeryn had to cut for two because I shot it off with Eiryss. Another win. Sadly he did pop feat so +3 is going to be annoying.
Bottom of Round 2: Its my feat turn. I allocate one to one manticore two to the other. I pop feat with Vyros, cast mobility camp 2 behind a wall and hope for the best. Strike force activates walks into position, should have charged but I forgot that Eiryss's ability to remove focus applied on her melees and I really regret it. I plan to take out Typhon and the Carnivean. Shoot Spiny Growth off Carnivean then forget to put a warrior in melee. Whatever Ill just go with it. Typhon gets a a fully loaded manticore to the face. Triggers Re-spawn. Didn't realize it was 3 inches not 2 so the griffon is out of range. Well crap this is going down hill fast. The other manticore goes for the heavy with the claws and thresher whatever its called and takes it out. Griffon goes on the Seraph and leaves it on 3 boxes. So not too bad but much worse of a feat turn than I had set up for.
Top of Round 3: My opponent realizes he didn't use the retaliatory strike once from the feat but thats okay Typhon is still alive. Blight Blades ambush in. Kill a strike force, but Narn takes it like a boss, and they are about a half inch out from my arcanists. Saeryn Recasts Respawn on Typhon who then kills a griffon. Carnivean kills a kills a manticore and finishes off the griffon who was on a couple boxes from turn 2. Strike force gets cleaned up by deathstalkers leaving just a few left and Eiryss. Saeryn camping 2 in a cloud and at DEF20 from range.
Bottom of Round 3: I don't have much choice and I see my chance for assassination. Load up my one full box griffon and my manticore. Chimera activates finishes off typhon who then re-spawns again since he recast it. Strike Force goes clears out of the way kills some support and Eiryss takes a shot at the 'lock but even RAT 9 aiming misses DEF 20. This is where I discover that I actually have a shot at this time for some shenanigans. Manticore boosts strength and walks over to Typhon does a 2 handed throw power attack boosts to hit. Gets it. Strength Test. Gets it. Throws him at Saeryn. Since its considered a melee attack she is only DEF 16 gets it with the boost. The 'lock is now knocked down. Heres the issue Typhon dies to the throw and she reaves 5 off of him putting her up to her full seven. I got what I was going for but I may have just strewed myself over. Arcanist walks up to the Griffon gives is CP. Then it charges. KD target, it hits dice +1 on the charge. This is when I realize that he maxed out Carnivean last turn so no transfers only thing he has left is the quarter health Seraph who dies to the charge attack. By one more and its GG. Assassination bottom of the 3rd.
Post Game: So I feel like I played decently but I made some major mistakes. 1. I should have shot Respawn of Typhon instead of Spiny Growth off Carnivean on my feat turn. 2. I should have remembered to put a warrior in range to proc feat on the Carnivean. As far as things I did well I feel like I managed the strike force really well. Even with all of the sprays he never killed ever many on a given turn and I ended the game with about half of them left which is more than I thought I would thought there were a few instances were I spread them out too far and they ended out of formation. Thanks for reading I know it probably wasn't the easiest to follow but I helped me sort thought what went wrong and what went right. Any advice would be appreciated.
