Getting started with VassalEventually this will be a better tutorial on getting started with Vassal, but for now the most important stuff: Try to make sure you have a reasonably recent Java runtime installed, from wherever you get java from. Try to hold back the tears as they proclaim how many millions of devices run Java... it will hopefully be over soon. Get the main Vassal application from www.vassalengine.org. The current version at the time of writing 3.2.17, this version incidentally fixes the jumpy tape measure bug if you don't use 100% zoom. Download the module from somewhere. Launch Vassal, select File > Open Module and browse to the vmod file you just downloaded. Next time you launch Vassal, the module will appear in the launcher window instead. If you're interested in the CID, grab the extension from here. To add it, quit the module if it's running, and in the main launcher right-click the WMH module and select Add Extension. Browse to the vmdx file and it will load along with the module next time. You will see a Grymkin tab on the Hordes model window. Some people prefer to play only with voice communication, and Skype is a popular choice. Some people say this is because it makes the game quicker, or because it enhances the social feel of the game. Having observed many games, I am confident these game are no quicker (though it may feel that way to the participants). If you feel that the social aspect is important, I encourage you to try Discord instead of Skype, as observers can also listen in or discuss the game. There is a Discord server accessible here: discord.gg/XgGmuh2, and there is also a link to it in the module's Help menu as well. It works best through Chrome if you use a browser, but the native app is a great choice if you plan to keep using it. NOTE: If you have a Mac and run Sierra, there is a bug that might affect you. The best workaround for this is to open the module's preferences (Warmachine and Hordes MKII > Preferences) and turn OFF the combined application window checkbox. This bug relates to dragging items from floating windows onto the main map. It will hopefully be addressed soon, but does not appear to be a Vassal bug.

How do you get the new models added?

Do you mean the CID models? I'm going to paste the relevant text from the original post. This can come across as a bit rude, but I'm just trying to highlight it. If you've tried this and had trouble, or it didn't make sense, let me know: If you're interested in the CID, grab the extension from here. To add it, quit the module if it's running, and in the main launcher right-click the WMH module and select Add Extension. Browse to the vmdx file and it will load along with the module next time. You will see a Grymkin tab on the Hordes model window.

I am talking about things like EoT not being in there and to be honest I am not sure what other models at the moment as I havent gone through the whole thing that was just at a quick glance. I plan to start playing on it when I get time and I am trying to figure out how to just build it myself but my time is limited on things like that as the woman in my life does not like me spending time on the comp at home lol. If you want I can go through the entire module and list every model that is missing for every faction but I dont think this is really the place for it. I am new to Vassal and dont really know how updating it goes about.

Ah, I get what you meant now. New releases get added (usually without sprites) whenever I know they're missing. I have a 4.5.6 update with new models for all the factions that have command books out, but I was holding it back until the rest arrive. Each update currently means uploading another 150MB file on my slow connection. Once the free cards arrive, this won't be such a long process, but up until now it's been all secrecy and protect-the-IP-like-the-internet-doesn't-exist.
In the meantime, it's easy enough to play with missing models - you can find empty bases in the Misc tab for each faction, or you can just use another similar model. Both of these can be renamed with ctrl-L (for label), but the empty bases default to showing their name above. Renaming an existing model will only show the name as a tooltip.

Yeah thats kind of what I thought. Do you have a tutorial for making any of these changes. I dont mind helping I just dont know how to do it and I myself have great internet lol. As far as free cards I was just going to use war room to go through to get all the information as I own most of the factions and planed on buying the rest either tonight or tomorrow.
As far as substitutes thats kind of what i have been doing using models that pretty much have the same weapons renaming them and running them lol. War room helps because the people i play so far just connect via internet and they can see everything in my army.

There's no tutorial about it, but if you right-click and edit the module from the main Vassal launcher, you'll open it in edit mode, and you can see the definitions for everything in the module. There's a node for models, which expands down to the games, then the factions, model-types and eventually the models themselves. Poke around, see how things are put together, and decide if you really want to use this tool to make changes (it's really not the best UI in the world, but it's not as complicated as it initially looks). You can copy and paste definitions, and that's generally what I do for any new model - take an existing definition that's closest to the new one and clone it, then update it. You need to remember to edit the name in both the basic piece trait and the ModelName dynamic property. For a caster you may need to change the FocusFury attribute, and for multi-wound infantry/solos, you should add one of the boxes prototypes (see the definitions for existing multi-wounds). That said, Vassal does not usually make collaborating easy, because it maintains an incrementing ID for new items, so if people get out of sync it causes conflicts in the XML. If you'd like to get the new stuff added quickly, I'm happy to do it - I just don't have many factions in war room. I find them overpriced, personally, especially for factions I don't intend to play myself. If you can provide me the basic info on what's missing, I'll happily update and publish the new module this evening. What I need to know is: model name and faction, model type (caster/beast/jack/solo, etc), box count or damage grid/spiral details, and base size. Also focus/fury for a caster. I wrote a script that generates damage grids from a text file. You don't have to provide the info in this format, but if you want to it just looks like this: Scavenger XXXXXX XXXXXX X....X ...... HCCCCM XHHMMX
Beast grids use MBS and also lower case mbs for the shared dots. So far I have the new models added for Trollbloods, Protectorate, Circle, Legion and Cygnar. I have Minions in War Room, but I haven't noticed anything new for them yet. I'll do a walk through later in case I missed something.

Awesome man this is a great start. I will sit down tonight when I get home and play around a little bit. As far as models go I could probably provide you with anything you need as I have most of the factions and typically by 1 or 2 a month. I plan to own them all since it seems that is going to be the norm in the future.

That's because Malnorma is dead. Shisenshi on Discord has been making an effort to get things updated, here's his most recent link: drive.google.com/open?id=0B_2U_042ikwxWFo4ZmdGTXo2a3cYou should join the Discord server to check for new versions or updated CID modules.

Is there a Vassal WMH community somewhere to organise games? I feel like I'd like to try it, but unless there's a good pool of players it could be difficult to arrange (I have only a couple hours at a time to play)

You just message people and ask for a game and you'll usually get one in my experience. i average a game a day on vassal because of this. the others are to use the discords, i'm not sure if i am allowed to post the links here but i'll risk it and post 2 discord links: discord.gg/cCMtf3discord.gg/uymV4Eone of them is hte big r/warmachine discord with a #vassal room and the other is called Warmachine vassal. Although really the best source is just finding games on there. its like a chat room
