Any players on these forums? I assume there's at least SOME crossover, what with the big stompy robots.

I used to play BattleTech. Haven't done so with any regularity lately, though, and most of my games within the last ten years have been on MegaMek.

I have it, don't play it as often as I'd like.

Battletech was my first tabletop miniature game. Lots of fond memories of the game, though I haven't played in some time.
There was an event at GenCon 2012 (I think) where the players planned like a year in advance and simulated one of the battles at Tukayyid, something to do with a Clan Wolf attack on a train. It took all convention for them to finish, and watching the train move further and further every day that I'd pass by was great. There were probably 25 or 30 players on each side, and everyone had their mechs painted up as Wolf or ComStar. It looked epic.

Any discussion on your mind, ProvenGreil? I'd love to talk some BattleTech.

Played a TON of it from the time it was Battledroids up to the early '90s. Really enjoyed it but the game stores all dried up in my town and nobody was playing any more. I still have some of my minis but haven't played in almost 25 years.

Any discussion on your mind, ProvenGreil? I'd love to talk some BattleTech. I was mostly just curious. It's been a bug in my ear with the approaching kickstarter beta coming soon. I was given an old set for free one time, recognized it from a MechWarrior game I'd played. I took it up to my dorm room and read the rules, and have been hooked ever since. I'm an eternal victim of liking things that are generally unpopular though, so I couldn't find much in the way of local interest.

My brother and I played in the early-mid 80s. Many a game went soooo long into the night. Once the next door neighbors came by to complain, about our loudness and cussing. Seems that f-ing Battlemaster couldn't hit the broadside of an Archer or Rifleman EVER! Stopped playing when I left for college. Tried it once, in college. Some yahoo thought it 'fun' to have a jump-jet PPC mech, shoot and scoot, never there for the retaliation. A-holes gotta ruin a perfectly fun game... Strangely enough, got to go with Catalyst Games to man their Gen Con booth (year?) for their re-launch of Battletech. It was fun selling it and trading stories with fans. I'm still a fan.

Did you ever get into custom designs? Back in the 80s and 90s you had to do all of the stuff by hand, but nowadays with things like Heavymetal Pro or The Drawing Board you can make things really easily now. But yeah, I agree about swapping war stories with people at conventions, it's a blast. A gent at my table at OrcCon some years ago told us this story about some guy piloting a Hunchback IIC and managing to close the distance enough to use the two big guns against some Uranus camping out in a Viking on high ground. The guy managed to actually make it to the Viking without dying, the story of which was both incredibly entertaining and likely quite embellished. Anyways, he gets there and says something to the other player about lubbing up for what was coming, and tosses his dice on the table. Four 1s. So both uAC/20s are jammed and he has to resort to the medium lasers, and due to the range and ammo problems the Viking has to try to fight him off with the machine guns. I don't think the narrator ever said who won, but it was a great story.

Despite my low number of total games, it didn't stop myself and a friend from doing a company on company sized battle that took us a full week once. I had several missile boats and one mech had a TAG, so I loaded the semi-guided ammo. Tagged an atlas on the first turn and in come about 90 missile, LRM 15s and 20s thundering down for scores of damage, just scattering across the armor. then, the one random LRM 5 scores one missile hit, and *bink*! Through armor crit to the foot. That atlas....never made it to the battle until it was already decided.

Plus I worked in a law firm at the time and had access to really kick-ass industrial Xerox machines. We had oodles of copies of all the standard mechs. Roll a d20 for your assigned light, medium, heavy, and/or assault. Random matches of 4-8 mechs vs 4-8 mechs, tonnage balanced. Hunchback in Cititech, nasty, if you got the correct d20 roll to get him.

Dropping a Phoenix Hawk-IIC-2 against someone who -apparantly- never heard of the design.
He's seen the Griffin IIC And Marauder IIC: Mildly uninterested tone: "Ah, a bit heavier I guess?" Me (troll mode engaged) "Yeah a bit."
Jump around for a bit. 5/8 is not slow enough to warrant further investigation I guess.
"I shoot with my LRMs" -okay, how many? "Four, only weapons I got." -okay, fives, tens? "Twenties." -Shit, let me see th-HOW THE SHIT IS THAT A PHOENIX HAWK?!

Basically, though, what I typed before is that limiting custom designs by refit classes was a way to avoid munchkinism while still getting the customs(some book or other specified them, you needed a day, a ladder, and a pulley to swap a laser for its ER version, but a DHS upgrade was a full cooling system/engine remove and replace job in a well equipped hangar for like a week)

Had a Warhammer 6D with both arms wrecked. Swapped the PPC's for ER larges and extra heatsinks when the "refit and repair phase" of the campaign turned up.
Damage was shit but the thing had even better stamina and more flexibility.
