I'm looking to add Thyron to my RET collection, mainly because I really like the model.
I'm having trouble figuring out a good list for him though, as he looks like he could work with just about any list that includes at least 1 melee unit and 1 melee jack.
His spell list looks like he could use Sylys, but his stats and abilities makes me think he's best friends with the Fane Knight Guardian.
Generally he looks like a combined arms caster with a melee focus to me.
How large a battle group doe he want want? Does he want heavies or lights? Is he only interested in melee infantry? Does he want a solo (Pain Knight?) for Storm Rager, or does he want to mix it up in melee himself, or even just use it for the defensive benefits?
I dont own any Dawn Guard, so I was thinking that Defenders of Ios might be good?

Here is a video of Thyron with a combined list. The Ret player is Gaston from Advanced Maneuvers. youtu.be/UGB11OkqhJ0

Consistent damage from rifle teams, snipers and jacks adds up, forcing opponent to commit. Halbs and the griffon act as the vanguard with jacks and thyron doing the cleanup.
Some people prefer AFG and you can play Ellowuyr swordsmen for variety, just drop one halbs unit and thane.

Things I like with Thyron:
Fane knight guardian (+2 melee def/Parry) Lyss Healer (no knock downs) Artificer (+2 def) Void tracers (punish magic a bit)
He becomes a tank of a caster at Def 19/Arm 18 (w/ Storm Rager) and he will do work.
However, I also really like him in defenders with a very similar list to Tarnium's list above. Only difference is I opt to take house ellowyur swordsmen instead of the 2 ghost snipers + sphinx. I think thyron likes 2 heavies but doesnt necessarily need it. I just like to have a big feat turn w/ cleave/sidestep

I know they provide support for more than just him, but it looks excessive. Does he do enough work/soak enough damage for this to be worth it?

Personally I think that while it is nice to have the whole defensive package it's not 100% needed, I feel with just the Fane and the Lys Healer he reaches levels of durability where it is safe for him to be on the front line and the rest is just optional added bonuses.

Agreed - its not necessary but its a LOT of fun. I love having thryon up there almost invincible. They have to chew threw a crap ton of support that is screened by your units/jacks. The other way I run him is in defenders - I only take the fane and nyss. You cant have him super up front at that point but he is still durable.

Thyron is a lot of fun and I really think SR17 and Ellowuyr Swordsmen are going to give him a nice place in our lineup. He's very tough to kill with the Guardian and he last little reason not to play in Defenders of Ios which gets you a free Issyen for another Shield Guard buddy. Swordsmen under his feat will absolutely chew through just about any other single-wound infantry and their minifeat can make constesting their zone a nightmare for one turn.
I played a game this weekend using this list. War Room Army
Retribution of Scyrah - 8/15
Theme: Defenders of Ios 3 / 3 Free Cards 75 / 75 Army

Heavy Rifle Team - Leader & Grunt: 4 House Ellowuyr Swordsmen - Leader & 9 Grunts: 16 - House Ellowuyr Swordsman Officer & Standard - PC: 5 Houseguard Halberdiers - Leader & 9 Grunts: 13 - Houseguard Halberdier Officer & Standard - Officer & Standard: 4 - Soulless Escort - PC: 1 Houseguard Halberdiers - Leader & 9 Grunts: 13 - Houseguard Halberdier Officer & Standard - Officer & Standard: 4

The whole list including Thyron was able to get way ip the board and choke up my opponent. Thyron even survived a Rahn assassination run thanks to Blade Shield stopping Helios from dragging him in (from behind too, stupid TK). The only other casters we have that would have lived through that were Issyria and Ghyrrshyld and only on the merit of stopping all of the spellcasting that got me in range of Helios.
I think there's a solid argument for guns with him too; Spellpiercer Riflemen or Stormfall can be pretty brutal in theory but he doesn't do much else for them.
One thing that hurts is the cost of his spell list. Storm Rager was great for juggling in MkII but not that it costs half it's stack (and Issyen lost his second attack) it'll likely stay on Thyron all game. I do like it on Aelyth in theory but again you don't want to have to upkeep and cycle it the turn Thyron wants it back. Onslaught can also be tricky since you have to drop Rager to cast it.

I have run Mage Hunter Infiltrator lists with him since mk2 and wanted to try some of our new toys, so I recently brought the following with me to a Champions tournament (and won 3 out of 4 games I played with the list):
Thyron - Defenders of Ios - Fane Knight Guardian (free) - Manticore - Aspis - Banshee AFG full Houseguard Halberdiers + CA + 3 Soulless* 2 Heavy Rifle Teams 3 Arcanist Mechanics 2 Ghost Snipers Houseguard Thane Lys Healer Skeryth Issyan (free)
* I ended up with 3 Soulless simply because I couldn't find another 2-point Solo in theme. Their magical weapons did come in handy in a couple of matches, though, by threatening Incorporeal models with free strikes.
The list was originally designed to annoy Cygnar and Protectorate (Spellpiercer annoys Arcane Shield and Hymn of Passage users a lot). In one of my first test games, I killed a Stormwall in a single turn (using both Heavy Warjacks, both Heavy Rifle Teams, and a Ghost Sniper). I decided it was good as an all-round list after that. Of course, when I brought it to a tournament, I ended up facing Cryx, Circle, Cryx, and Skorne. My main impression was that as long as I dare put Thyron up the board, I can often win on attrition (though I resorted to both Assassination and Deathclock as win conditions in the tournament). When I try to play safe, however, I have so far failed twice and lost on attrition/scenario. Thyron is a monster on DEF 17 in melee (one game, I face tanked a Synergy 2 Wraithbaned Pureblood and lived to tell the tale).
Edit: I should add that the Cryx matches were a bit wobbly (both due to my own lack of experience and because I feel mass Stealth is problematic) so in the future I would look at a pairing which handles those (possibly Ghyrrshyld if I enter another Champions tournament).

So far it looks like I have to change my perception of Thyron, apparently he's a frontline caster who wrecks face, provided that he gets a little defensive support. Looks like I'll be picking up a Lys Healer, Fane Knight Guardian and possibly even a Magister along with big T

I dont own any Dawn Guard, so I was thinking that Defenders of Ios might be good? OK, I skipped over the initial questions the first time round. Sorry. Battlegroup size and composition depends on what army you are building. I have seen Forges of War lists which use Griffons (with Cleave) for infantry clearing, for example. On the other hand, you can run him just fine with few 'jacks (for example two heavies). It all depends what kind of things you want the list to face. Spellpiercer can be really good on ranged attacks, so while he probably wants a unit of melee infantry, you can take a lot of ranged as well (again, depending on what you want to face). I tend to keep Storm Rager on Thyron for the defensive benefits. He is a melee monster and surprisingly durable with a bit of support (Fane Knight Guardian and an extra Shield Guard) so Storm Rager helps make him even more intimidating (and/or discourage assassination runs on him). From personal experience, yes, Defenders of Ios is great - although it is certainly not the only way to go (I believe you can construct very effective - but different - Thyron lists using all of our current themes).

Def 17 riposte is mean, def 17 2 shield guards is mean. Arm 18 is mean. My experience says he loves sphinx cause it's a cheap throwayaw heavy with great performance under assail , concentrated power, cleave and potential feat.
