I'm thinking about picking up the Undercity board game. I believe it comes with two Freebooter models. I was wondering if it could be fun to just slip them into a casual list (alongside a couple of beater jacks). Would there be any point in jackmarshaling them, or is there simply no real advantage over just running them on power-up focus? Anything janky you can do with a couple of Freebooters in a random list?

Freebooters are $$$, especially if you already have knockdown in the list. Smash & Grab is a fantastic ability even if you can't get the trash damage dice (charge+2 boosts to hit is pretty typical). As mentioned mags2 is fantastic with them (moarspd, unyielding, knockdown via renegades, etc), but they fit well with most anyone. Shae, Bart, Damiano(warpath/feat), Ash (def12, lash), Macbain (energizer+countermeasure), Fiona (telgesh), Mags1 (feat run distance, good upkeeps) can also run them well. If you really want to spam them, probably Shae, Bart, or Magnus2.
I think you need a plan to give them additional psuedofocus for jackmarshaling to be worth it. Most factions do this via powerup, but free charges are our main option: Lanyssa, pMags iron aggression, or Shae's Coup de Main. With one of those it's totally worthwhile if the jack marshal was already in the list. That last point unfortunately tends to confine me to Dirty Meg; as a 3pt repair option with a stall gun/mat fixer that opponents never remember she's already got a place and I'm happy to move freebooter over to her control. Llael theme coming in september encourages Devildogs and allows (free?) rutger and colbie, so that may be interesting theme for marshaling soon as ash doesn't care about battlegroup.

I think you need a plan to give them additional psuedofocus for jackmarshaling to be worth it. Is that just for the second boosted attack roll? I like to run Lanyssa so I guess that will do. Or perhaps I should consider Crosse? His spells don't help them, but he can give them both two focus in one turn, for less than the cost of two jackmarshals (obviously that's if I'm doubling down on the stupid and bringing two of them).

Free charge+crush is roughly equivalent to a 3 focus load so I don't feel like I'm losing anything at that point.
Let's say you're able to deliver the booter to a kd'd khador heavy and you're going for as much damage as possible. The free headbutt is going to average 0 in both these cases, but it does gain the +2 from crush!. As a pow13 matches arm20 it would contribute a bit to average damage if these numbers didn't assume average dice every time. charge(ps14 4dice avg 8)+initial (4.5)+headbutt(0)+2bought attacks (9)=21.5 charge ps16 (avg10)+initial(6.5)+crush!atk (6.5)=23
People used to run Crosse as a supersolo, so I can't see why that wouldn't work. Grab and smash isn't bad for clearing lines of sight, knocking things down, and setting up Backstab targets. Control area would limit them to one-turn missiles but they die quick anyway. If you're spamming freebooters on Crosse and Marshals, I think Shae's the way to go. 16" threat range on feat and they're all fully loaded every turn.

just run with magnus2 and toss stuff around. it fine I don't have either of the Magnuses (Magni? Magneese?). Mercs is my secondary faction; I mainly play Mercdor (Khador with Mercs). Unfortunately it's hard to justify a marshaled Freebooter over a battlegroup Kodiak (or one under Andrei) in Khador, even just for fun... but dammit, I'm trying! I'm thinking that if I brought a battlegroup Kodiak he could chuck an enemy heavy over to a Freebooter to wail on (hopefully with Crush); the rest of the time that Freebooter is a shield-guard, so... it could work in casual games, right?

How about a buccaneer for some knockdown shenanigans? Its a classic tag team and decent for a 15pts package. Its probably not cost efficient (and a bit silly, since the buccaneers range is longer than the Freebooters charge range) but Gaston could buff the buccaneers range by 2".
An very silly knockdown themed Merc list:
Mercenary Army - 75 / 75 points
(Magnus 1) Magnus the Traitor [+30]
- Buccaneer [6]
- Freebooter [9]
- Freebooter [9]
- Freebooter [9]
- Renegade [10]
- Renegade [10]
Gastone Crosse [4]
- Buccaneer [6]
- Buccaneer [6]
- Freebooter [9]
- Freebooter [9]
Thor Steinhammer [4]
- Wroughthammer Rockram [14]

I won't be able to give you too many specifics, as I know you don't have the Magni and I don't play filthy Khador (although interestingly enough my Freebooters are kitbashed out of Khador heavy chassis; Llaelese ingenuity will prevail!), but Freebooters are amazing. I run them quite frequently in a list that looks like the below, but I have recently started running them with Shae as well. Magnus2 is still my go to, but Coup de Main allows you to marshal them instead of tying them to a warcaster/journeyman.
I would say you can also run them on a jack marshal if you have sources of knockdown in the list, because then you don't need to have quite as many options to "fix" the MAT. Gastone is also a great option, as you can leave them with the one focus to charge if the target is knocked down, or load them up if not and still have a decent shooter.
If you have no way to buff them or reliably knock things down though...you are probably better off with 18 points spent elsewhere.
Mercenary Army - 75 / 75 points [Theme] The Kingmaker's Army
(Magnus 2) Magnus the Warlord [+28] - Buccaneer [6] - Buccaneer [6] - Freebooter [9] - Freebooter [9] - Nomad [11] - Nomad [11] - Renegade [10] - Renegade [10] - Madelyn Corbeau, Ordic Courtesan [4] Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor [0(5)] Trencher Infantry (max) [16] - Trencher Infantry Officer & Sniper [5] - Trencher Infantry Rifle Grenadier (3) [6]

I have a Bucanner still in it's box, sounds like this is a good time to put it together. my Freebooters are kitbashed out of Khador heavy chassis See, even the most ardent enemies of the Motherland admit Khador engineering is superior!

As soon as I saw this was your thread, I almost bailed. I CAN'T ADMIT THAT HERE! But they look awesome, imo. I'm not a great modeler and a worse painter, but they are some of my favorite jacks to put on the table, both ruleswise and aesthetically.

See, as much as I like Khador jacks' aesthetics the Freebooter is actually right up there as one of my favourite looking jacks - probably second only to the Spriggan. In fact I built my Merc multijack on a Freebooter: Someday I'll paint him... someday... sigh...

I don't have any pictures at the moment (like I said, nothing to brag about), but I will post some when I get home. Most of my jacks are kitbashed or changed in some way because it feels more genuine to the merc spirit somehow. My Rocinante and Gallant are built on Protectorate chassis, my freebooters are Khador, my talons and one of my buccaneers are cygnar lights and my Nomads are cygnar heavies. I have a set of vanguards built out of the "khador" grind chassis as well. Most of them also have horrifically ugly paintjobs, partially because I'm terrible and partially because I like the idea of scrapped mechs getting a once over with whatever ugly paint they had lying around and being thrown back into the fray.
