Ha, you'll see more Warmahorde players here when PP allows more than one obscure game store in SoCal. The GW bias here is real. That's a weird thing to say, WM/H exploded in SoCal with Mk3, there is literally a new SR announcement each week in the WM SoCal Group

Did Mk2 to Mk3 transition cost Wmh players? Yes, though there is no estimate how much. I guess we'll see at WTC. You mean the one that sold out with full 64 teams? I think it will do just fine

Just to throw a spanner in the groupthink, in my (dying) meta, it's all the guys with MKII history who are still playing. The guys who started in MKIII have all jumped ship.
I seem to see a lot of folks online very quick to blame the "MKII mindset" or similar ideas for problems, but I'm seeing the MKIII mindset just not catching people's imaginations.

My meta is dying. Our usual tuesday crowd was up to 20-25 people on a tuesday and our monthly tournaments generally had between 24-28. Last tuesday had 8 people and of the four tables going 3 where playing guild ball. The tournament venue that used to host the largest war machine events stopped as they were not getting the 8 people to launch them.
The reasons people gave 1) Dislike that theme lists are dominant. They say that The factions that are doing the best are mostly just based on which theme list allows them to play 20 points up. A few said I don't want to have to play a theme list for my (gators, banes, whatevers) to work right, they should just work that way.
2) 40k is getting better and they are getting ready for 8th
3) Guild ball is better in every way.
4) The game is moving in a direction that I greatly dislike. Cid steamroller 2017 seems to be systematically destroying anything I want to do in this game. Scenarios are less impactful, gun lines are more powerful, the game is less clean, assassinations are less prevalent, clock is one of the most common win conditions, balance of the game is based on who has the best theme lists. The game used to be about daring plays for assassination or risky dominations with your caster. In the games I have played of Steamroller 2017 have been won by activating your army quickly, taking no risks, shooting my opponent of the table, and avoiding any big attrition swings. Why risk any models for points? just keep shooting their stuff eventually they will not have anything left. Assassinations? Not really, without dominating being a thing casters are in the middle of know where at tip of the now smaller kill box, behind a forest. The game was exciting now it is boring.
You can guess I am the 4th reason.

Sad to hear your meta is dying. Ours is struggling, but we're trying to get new people into it. Gunlines are far less common in our neck of the woods. In fact, I just saw a circle player pull off a crazy assassination against a Khador player using a Jack brick. It involved an wild argus animus combined with a feral throwing a Juggernaut onto and crushing Sorasha 1. Awesome game to see. We kinda love to go for assassinations whenever possible!

I don't have enough info about numbers so I can just give a general opinion, but in Italy sales on fb markets and such have sky rocketed. Lot of people selling entire factions and armies, so on a first glance I'd say our meta is getting shredded and losing lots of dudes. Just an opinion anyway, I can't be sure of it.

I just started a few months ago, after 3rd edition had already started, and without anything to compare it to, WMH is a much better game than 40k has been for the last few years. If you don't like Theme lists with free points, I assure you... you wouldn't like 7th edition with Formation spam. I've [temporarily] left 40k after a solid 18+ years of playing it, and while I'm looking forward to 8th, I'm thinking that if I want a competitive game I'll be more happy with WMH, but that's just based on experience.
That said, I can't say that I'm overly impressed with the use of Theme lists. Having only really looked into Retribution's lists, there seems to be some pretty clear-cut ways to build your lists. I personally like that if shooting has become more powerful, it encourages people not to just mash it up in the middle. With movement being so crucial in the game, forcing everything to just mush up in the middle seems strange to me. So allowing ranged attacks to be more useful feels right to me... coming from 40k.

I dobt see how shooting is getting stronger. There is so much anti gunline tech, los blocker in the center of every table and all the shieldguard themes. I stopped putting gunlines in my pairing for that reason.

It's so strange. By all objective measure WM is a much tighter designed game then 40K.
I think 40k gets people excited because the promise of plot changes.

War machine is more of a skirmish game compare to 40k. AOS seems more your style.

War machine is more of a skirmish game compare to 40k. AOS seems more your style. I'm not stupid. I mean as an objective measure. Redundancies, misbalances, inefficiencies, unstrategicness.
