Hi All,
I've been doing a lot of theory and listbuilding for G4 so I figured I'd kick off a thread to post all my thoughts and battle reports
Had my second game with him yesterday and this is what I played:
Theme: Defenders of Ios
1 / 1 Free Cards 75 / 75 Army
Lord Ghyrrshyld, the Forgiven - WJ: +28
- Sylys Wyshnalyrr, The Seeker - PC: 4
- Banshee - PC: 18 (Battlegroup Points Used: 18)
- Chimera - PC: 8 (Battlegroup Points Used: 8)
- Griffon - PC: 8 (Battlegroup Points Used: 2)
Houseguard Thane - PC: 4
Arcanist Mechanik - PC: 2
Arcanist Mechanik - PC: 2
Fane Knight Skeryth Issyen - PC: 0
Houseguard Halberdiers - Leader & 9 Grunts: 13
- Houseguard Halberdier Officer & Standard - Officer & Standard: 4
Stormfall Archers - Leader & 3 Grunts: 9
Stormfall Archers - Leader & 3 Grunts: 9
House Ellowuyr Swordsmen - Leader & 9 Grunts: 16
- House Ellowuyr Swordsman Officer & Standard - PC: 5
- Soulless Escort - PC: 1
I also ended up adding a Lyss healer after the CID changes to DoI.
Theory
The idea behind the list is to feat early to force favorable engagement and use the three jacks to have a wide Arcane Vortex bubble. Halbs should advance to just outside of enemy charge range on Feat turn to force either backing off or running to engage. Swordsmen should minifeat the turn after the feat to buy another turn of no one wanting to get in melee with them. Issyen is there because he's free and he can hang out behind the Halberdiers to proc Righteous Fury. Use Revive when needed to slow attrition.
The Game
My opponent was playing the CID Bane theme force with all the CID Banes and Wraith Engine. The list looked something like:
Scaverous
-Harrower
-Harrower
-Deathripper
Wraith Engine
Tartarus
Bane Warriors (max) + CA
Bane Warriors (max) + CA
Bane Knights (max)
Turn 1:
I went first, we were playing the new Breakdown scenario from SR2017. I ran my Halbs way up into the central and right zones with Issyen close behind. The Swordsmen went for the left zone which had a house in it along with a forest. One unit of Archers went on each flank with the Chimera on the right, Griffon on the left, and Banshee central. Opponent put the Knights across from the Halbs, one unit of Warriors central and one to the left. Wraith Engine was on my left with a Harrower about a third of the way from each table side.
Turn 2
I positioned the Halberdiers out of the Warrior's charge range, though I had to keep them in the Knight's charge range for the sake of keeping a zone presence so I left them in Shield Wall. Harrowers had started dropping Scather templates to prevent the Swordsmen from moving up so only a couple got in to the left zone. Stormfalls and Banshee picked off a few Knights and Warriors. Issyen advanced behind a triangle of Halbs deep in the right zone, Banshee stood behind the Halb line holding the center.
The feat worked as well as I could have hoped. Knights charged Halberdiers but thanks to Set Defense and Shield Wall he only managed to kill a couple and every single Knight ended up Stationary. A couple of the Warriors on the left were frozen by Swordsmen as well. Arcane Vortex on the Banshee stopped a nasty Feast of Worms targeting the Halbs.
The rest of the game became really grindy. I brought a couple Swordsman back on Turn 3 but with 4" scathers everwhere I was never able to bring as much of the unit to bear as I wanted to. The Griffon never had much to do, and once the Wraith Engine entered the fight on my left flank with a house between it and the Banshee I was in trouble. I massively underestimated what it would take to take that thing down. He was able to minifeat with both Warrior units to get about 5 banes back total after I wiped out the Knights and survived a failed assassination run due to bad dice.
Eventually we called the game because the shop was closing up but he was likely going to win. The Banshee ended up dying to Warriors (frikken Ghostly saved him from being jammed) and the Wraith Engine and both jacks were untouched.
