Woah woah woah...
I've owned skaldi for years and he has seen the table like twice. Easily one of the most overrated models we have. Especially when he's competing with Fell Caller, Runebearer and Valka for free solo spots in Storm of the North.
Woah Woah Woah Woah..... Overrated seems like a but of leap there bud. Skaldi is so worth it if you are running a single brick of champs. He adds 8 boxes to the unit, gives them overtake (an underrated ability on them) and relentless charge (letting them not always need a feel caller for PF and allowing them to benefit from things like War Cry. Consider a regular champ costs 3 ish points and skaldi is only 2 points more for: 3 boxes, +1 Mat, relentless charge and overtake for the unit. As well as giving them immunity cold (matters into some lists) He is for sure worth it See. Overrated
In all seriousness, I consider him in two possible situations.
1) When I'm 5 points short of a free solo so he's effectively free as their are no units that cost 5 points, so sometimes he's the only way to make it work.
2) When you're entire plan revolves around those 8 extra wounds, so single Champion unit without any kind of screen.
The other abilities are ok, but think what you're giving up. A scoring solo, when points are at a premium. Sure the Fell caller can score a flag but do you really want to stick a bigger target on his head?
You also could have Valka in that spot and Valka is just amazing!

Outside Grissel 1 i have played a single night troll in some lists and e vastly prefer the 8 point options that have guns as i find them way more universally useful. The night troll hasnt really hindered me, but i have never felt like it was the obvious correct choice. Its more like "i guess you could play one and it wont make a big difference". I love that you bring some detailed data on why you like them. Against slow medium based infantry they might get the charge, but either one of those units you mention will tie for threat range, or out threat the night troll, and they can easily dispatch one of your night trolls if they get the charge. Then your second one comes in and kills 1-2 medium guys, and the remaining 3-4 wipe out your second night troll. All of a sudden your trade has been 14 points to kill 2 medium bases. It feels a bit unreliable, especially since you do not have pathfinder, so you have no reliable way to get the drop on them. It can still happen for sure, but it is very unreliable. The comparison with an EBDT is interesting, but the EBDT usually DOES out threat medium based infantry. If you count on your beast having Rage, the EBDT can charge and kill 2-3 medium bases, and the remianing 2-3 guys will not be able to one round it. It can mop them up the next turn. Im not trying to invalidate your experience here. Under the right circumstances they will be a nifty idea. This however is sort of a guide on what to buy for new players, and my conscience will not allow me to recommend new players to buy more than a single night troll (if even that) unless they plan on playing Grissel 1. Maybe they are on the uprise though as you say. If they can fight medium bases well, and medium bases are more common now, perhaps they will be a staple in 6 months. Please keep us posted on your experience. Maybe other ppl will follow in your footsteps and we shall see night trolls more commonly in lists in the future! Hey guys I am still working with my 2x Night Trolls lists on the same theme. Some more data that have collected. Into Tharn CID – Still finding 2 x night troll into Tharn really useful although any lists that also include a Woldwyrd can represent a problem. Woldwyrd ignores the stealth and if you have ast the Maulers animus on one as a spell then it gets free boosted damage which tends to wreck these fragile beasts. But played right im still finding the 2 beast combo a pretty effective option. Into Armoured Corp – Against shield-walled shock troopers these guys struggle more due to the high arm of the MOW’s. However they still have some play in putting some heavy hits on a unit and pulling them out of formation with the Night Trolls animus. This allows other troops like fenblades to go in and chip off the last of the damage boxes. Another option is to boost damage on the non charge attacks as you should be hitting most of the time due to MOW low def. I would like ot hear if anybody else is using these beasts into other factions. I still think that with the shift to med infantry, these guys are becoming a viable option with several casters. Happy to hear thoughts.

Rage only lasts for your turn, so Woldwyrds wont get free boosted shots unless the night troll is using its animus and proccing a witch hunter shot from the wyrd.

Also, wyrds dont ignore stealth. On the flip side though, shock troopers cant be pushed by the animus

Would be Nice if they had sprint as an animus:) feels right in my ears with a night troll. I do not feel attracted to it in any way

Any plans to update the thread with some of the new changes? Not at this time. I simply do not have hours and hours every day to type on the forum anymore. Updating this would take a LOT of time. I can just hope that some one else wants to take up the torch

So a Complete "Guide to Starting Circle" is out of the question?
