So I'm working on a custom objective to 3D print. The idea is it has some crates, and one crate will be open. And the contents of that crate will change depending on what the objective is. So here's where I am right now:
Armoury: A stack of swords or something. Fuel Cache: Coal Cargo Nets: ... netting? I guess? Observatory: Telescopes Wreckage: Ugh, random pieces of metal? Maybe some visible jack parts? Dugout: Yeah, I have no idea.
So first of all, what the hell do I put inside a crate to indicate a dugout? Additionally, I'm open to suggestions for the other objectives, and/or links to 3D files I can use for printing. I can do some 3d modelling or editing, but the main idea is something that will fit completely inside a square crate. Hopefully I will share some renders or perhaps photos of 3d prints in the next few days.

Shovels of course!

Hmm, I initially dismissed this idea because shovels won't fit into the crate... but now that you mention it, military shovels ("entrenching tools" I suppose) are actually much shorter than the typical garden shovel that I'm used to, so I guess they will fit!

Lol.
OK, I've sorted out the Armory and Dugout indicators. Working on the coal now; it's proving to be a little more annoying than I had hoped so far.
The other problem I'm having is that pretty much everything on the whole objective marker so far is wood, brass, and steel. I can vary up the colours of the wood somewhat, but overall I'm not exactly getting very much variety in colour. Well, maybe it will still look good, we'll see.

OK, so here's the objective selector:
It might be a little tricky to print, I'll give it a try tomorrow. The first version of the base has finished printing, I'll clean it up tomorrow and check if I'm happy with everything or if more tweaks are needed.

That looks really nice. Eminently sellable as well. If it works for you you should consider offering it for sale. Depending on what you want price wise I'd be interested in picking up one of these (if not more).

Depending on what you want price wise I'd be interested in picking up one of these (if not more). Thanks, but it wouldn't be possible to sell it as it uses several digital assets created and provided online for free by others. If the whole project works out, I might look into providing the files for free if the creators of all the assets used give me their permission. Oh, and I realised that it should be a lot easier to print than I initially judged, I just need to swap some of the faces around and I'll be able to orient it in a printer-friendly way. I'll give it a go tomorrow.

I had the main body of the objective printing yesterday, and it came out quite well: The idea is it will hold the type indicator (quick mock-up for demonstration purposes) and an optional d20 for tracking health: While it looks pretty good, there are a few issues. I'm going to try to make some tweaks and print it again over the next few days.

Two crates were just taking up too much room. So I removed one, and added some smaller objects that could give the whole thing a bit more colour and visual interest. There's still a lot of empty space so I would like to add even more, any suggestions what other little bits and pieces I can scatter about? Especially things that aren't wood and can maybe add some more colours?
Meanwhile this one is going to be printed to test the tweaks I made, along with the actual objective selector cube.

That is a good suggestion, I'll use them for reference for the next round of iteration.
So here's the current printed version:
The type selector cube actually printed out very nicely, with no real issues. The detail on the stacked telescopes isn't quite as clear as I would have liked, but the netting and wreckage actually look better than I expected.
There's still a couple of scaling issues I need to fix - the objective cube is too small inside the crate - and there's some small issues like the arrows being too delicate, but they should be easily fixed. I think the next print might just be the final version! Fingers crossed!

This is really neat! For other bits with visual interest, perhaps an ammo belt or a canteen?

I need to dial in the print settings as I had some issues with the last print, but it basically looks about right, I think this is pretty much the final version: That's the black Monsterpocalypse/Warcaster dice btw. I added some more bits and bobs, like the crowbar hanging off the side of the box (like it was just used to lever the lid off...), adjusted some of the sizes, etc. I'm glad I got it done before running out of steam - if I don't finish a new project within the first few days/weeks I tend to cool on it and move on. ADD or something I guess. Hopefully it won't take me too long to get it painted...
