Heya Trollfolk.
Long-time casual Circle player, but never had a regular Trolls player in my local. Think I've played against them once or twice in my whole WMH career. So I really have very little idea what most of you guys' stuff does, but I've always liked the way the models looked. Recently picked up a bulk-lot of used Trolls, and I'm trying to figure out what everything is, and how to build a passable list with it; I'm not worried about being competitive, just hoping to not embarrass myself utterly while I'm nutting out what does what. Read through the stickied primer at the top of this board (though I wasn't entirely sure if it was up-to-date?) and came up with the following:
[Theme] Band of Heroes [Madrak 1] Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftain [+29] - Dire Troll Bomber [17] - Dire Troll Mauler [15] - Troll Axer [10] - Trollkin Runebearer [0(5)] Fell Caller Hero [0(5)] Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (max) [9] Trollkin Champions (max) [16] - Skaldi Bonehammer [0(5)] Trollkin Fennblades (max) [15] - Trollkin Fennblade Officer & Drummer [5] Trollkin Warders (max) [17]
I went infantry heavy because there were a lot in the box (and because I play my Circle pretty beast-heavy, and thought I'd change it up...) What do you think? Is this terrible? Should I nix some of that infantry and grab another beast? This is most of my infantry, but I've a few more beasts to choose from. Feels a bit short of solos for scenario play, but I wasn't sure where to find the points for the Feralgeist that usually plugs that hole in my Circle lists.

It's a solid start! Personally, I would drop the Axer as Madrak1 tends to run his beasts as a second or third wave. Definitely want an Elder on the Stone, and I'd honestly play min Stone with an Elder before I ever played max Stone with no Elder.
If you want to play Warders, I would recommend two min units over 1 max unit. You can spread them out more and it's a tiny bit more points efficient. If you're not too keen on Warders, another unit Fennblades is a lot of DEF 14 Meat to chew through under Madrak1 or a unit of Long Riders can diversify the list a bit (fast, slamming potential, big beefy bodies at 14/20).
At that point, you still have 4 points left over and you've got a few options. If you're looking for a whole bunch of solos for scenario, Whelps are solid and will help manage Fury on the Bomber.

Yeah, the Elder on the Stone is probably the single biggest want on my list having just read the stat cards. But there wasn't one in the box, and I figure I should at least have a game or two with what I've got before I start buying more stuff... I don't have any Long Riders or Whelps in there either, but I'll definitely have a look at breaking the Warders up and maybe swapping out the Axer. Thanks for the feedback!

That list seems fine for a start. Personally I find a min unit of warders in practice is about as effective as a max unit. When you have a chance you might consider reducing the warders to a min unit then add the stone elder and maybe a stone scribe chronicler.

I will basically Echo the others Stone Scribe Chronicler is great on Fennblades, concealment going in knocking people down if they are hit. Beside Stone is your priority protection meaning concealment would be great there too.
Madrak1 can handle up to 8-10 fury without management so Mauler Bomber takes care of that. With Axer there (while he is okay) just upload Maddy. Stone Elder is always good but as you say he isnt available.
I have been running close to the same list with Grim1 but went with 1 min unit warders. They simply cannot harm anybody, but take a beating well - I use them to protect the stone if its hit.
So drop the Axer and Min unit Warders free up 17 points. Depending on what you own you can fill in stuff. Bog Trog Mist Speaker could be good so you wont be closed down by clouds. What you have is good however and can really teach you what do well in the list and what is limited. And as I said I ran it with Grim1, many warlocks can run that list. Calandra could and then you can even fury manage a bit - so my advise is run it and switch out bits and pieces.

Hmmm.
Couple of people have said the Axer is irrelevant, and may even get me into Fury trouble. And a couple people have mentioned downsizing the Warders to min. So then I guess I have to figure out what to do with the 17 points that'd leave me.
I've got a wide variety of other heavy and light warbeasts I could slot in for those points, but if an Axer is going to leave me in Fury trouble, another Mauler is going to pop poor Madrak's skull.
I don't, unfortunately, have a Chronicler either.
I do have the Sons of Bragg(9)(who I'm sorely tempted by, on the strength of the inherited paintjob alone), a Trollkin Champion Hero(5), and a Fennblade Kithkar(4). I think I've also got a Mist Speaker(4) in the Widow's Wood box that I could use, and I have a Dhunian Archon(6) on the way for my Circle lists. And some miscellaneous other minions I could pad with (Feralgeist, Bellows) should those others be too expensive. Any suggestions what to drop in there?

Okay with those possibilities WOW just WoW - this is what I would do - Throw Gobbers out when you get Stone Scribe Elder
List : 74/75 points
[Theme] Band of Heroes Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftain [+29] - Dire Troll Bomber [17] - Dire Troll Mauler [15] - Trollkin Runebearer [0(5)] Fell Caller Hero [0(5)] Dhunian Archon [0(6)] Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (max) [9] Sons of Bragg [9] Trollkin Champions (max) [16] - Skaldi Bonehammer [5] Trollkin Fennblades (max) [15] - Trollkin Fennblade Officer & Drummer [5] Trollkin Warders (min) [10] Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew [2]

Sons of Bragg may be Trolls most powerful infantry unit for the points and if you are having "trouble" using all your points I would 100% suggest using them.

While many of the proposed have been personal preference (I like the axer) none of them I would call bad. I think the list dickovdk posted would be an interesting list to try given the models you have available.

Thanks guys! Really pleased to get the Sons in there - I like the paintjob a lot. I'll pop back round and let you guys know how I go with em. (May be a bit though; I'm supposed to play a tourney in a week and a half, and not even I am mad enough to take an army I've never played before to a tourney. So I'm stuck with my warpwolves til then...)

The list is developing greatly I think! The sons are very good now, the champion hero is great with Champs and madrak (opponents hate rel strike). The chronicler allows you to have Def 16 Champs against heavy shooting and hero ballad of fennblades is rough on you opponent. Madrak himself is really strong, do try to trigger blood boon as much as you can! With the bomber you can get up to 4 boostable pow16 shots!
My recent madrak 1 looks like this: War Room Army
Trollblood - Madrak 1 BoH Dezember 19
Theme: Band of Heroes 75 / 75 Army
Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftain - WB: +29 - Trollkin Runebearer - PC: 0 - Dire Troll Bomber - PC: 17 (Battlegroup Points Used: 17) - Dire Troll Mauler - PC: 15 (Battlegroup Points Used: 12)
Dhunian Archon <! NO OWNED MODELS IN COLLECTION !> - PC: 0 Fell Caller Hero - PC: 5 Stone Scribe Chronicler - PC: 4 Trollkin Skinner - PC: 3
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - Leader & 3 Grunts: 6 - Stone Scribe Elder - PC: 3 Trollkin Champions - Leader & 4 Grunts: 16 - Skaldi Bonehammer - PC: 5 - Trollkin Sorcerer - PC: 3 Trollkin Fennblades - Leader & 9 Grunts: 15 - Trollkin Fennblade Officer & Drummer - Officer & Drummer: 0 Trollkin Long Riders - Leader & 2 Grunts: 12
THEME: Band of Heroes
Skinner wins games because he can block zones and flags. But I would not worry too much. Everything discussed I. This thread is very good and solid for the list I think.

The Dhunian Archon should be basically auto-include with Madrak1. High def + once per turn Vision + her healing and Madrak's feat should make stuff a giant pain to kill off. Working towards the below list should require pretty minimal purchases and be quite solid. You can also swap the Bomber for an Earthborn. Earthborn loves that +2 Def especially if you have some cooperative terrain on the table to pump his numbers. conflictchamber.com/?c7201b_-264N0r9DjqoP6M6R0k0mc8iTbK0b0ccATrollbloods [Theme] Band of Heroes [Madrak 1] Madrak Ironhide, Thornwood Chieftain [+29] - Dire Troll Bomber [17] - Dire Troll Mauler [15] - Trollkin Runebearer [0(5)] Dhunian Archon [0(6)] Stone Scribe Chronicler [4] Troll Whelps [4] Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (min) [6] - Stone Scribe Elder [3] Sons of Bragg [9] Trollkin Champions (max) [16] - Skaldi Bonehammer [0(5)] Trollkin Fennblades (max) [15] - Trollkin Fennblade Officer & Drummer [5] Trollkin Warders (min) [10]

Wanted to pop back and let people know that I gave the list a try. Think I'm going to like me some trolls; very different playstyle to my usual beast-heavy Circle. Dhunian Archon with Champions feels a bit like cheating... but only a bit. Going to take me awhile to remember to make a tough roll on essentially everything. And OMG the tiny control bubble! But all-in-all very fun. Thanks everyone for the various advice!
