Page 5 was all about being a good sport and not being an obnoxious gamer douche, but since it was written in obnoxious gamer douche-speak, some people took it as license to be an obnoxious gamer douche. Truly, a case of the medium being the message.
No, more the fact that people will always take instructions to mean what they WANT them to mean, not necessarily what they actually say. Each point on Page 5 came with an explanation, and when taken as a whole, even without each explanation, it was very much not obnoxious gamer douche. The obnoxious gamer douches just didn't read past the first one or two points and ignored the rest.

Yep, page 5 explicitly encourages defying convention and mentions no pride in using a fail-safe formula and yet powergamers somehow read it as an invitation to netlist and netlist hard

True, and in Warmachine you are not playing the entire army. Just a segment of a much larger force that is attempting to complete a special mission.
Well, most games are played (and most of the stories written) at that level. The game has the capacity to play more, it is just a lack of willingness, time, and sometimes stable, that prevent a full engagement.
I guess what I am trying to say, is that since PP is a smaller company than GW, the main point is just going on a licensing blitz to bring more attention to their IP. If someone wants to put the money into a DoW or whatever cool. I am also okay if the IP is licensed for smaller products like a version of Candy Crush Quest, Clash of Clans, whatever. Ya some product may be trash but there will be diamonds in the rough and it is a strategy that is working for GW.

Aaahhh page 5, before the cult of woke. To be fair, I am not sure Page 5 could survive the ANT IF A that is present in the Seattle area at the moment. It was probably best to drop it, rather than keep it but pussify it even more. Mk1's page 5 made Mk2's look tame though. It was still obviously not meant to be taken seriously, but I suppose print shares a bit of that internet effect where some people can't detect any intent beyond the literal meaning of the words. True. Sometime around late 2014-2015, figurative speech died. Of course, like most people in the country, I didn't get the obituary until this year.

TBH I think Mount and Blade would be a much better fit for WMH than Total War. You'd control a warlock or warcaster and indirectly control your machines/beasts and soldiers.

WMH:T looked very good. After a few patches, it played a little bit better, but it suffered from clunky UI and the MK2 focus mechanic (read: no power up).
I would have actually loved a Dawn of War 2-style Warmachine game. I also believe that an Iron Kingdoms cRPG (isometric or 3rd person) might do very welll.
