So I'm running a JML starting this weekend and I'm planning out my army for the league. I figured I'd play trolls since I haven't in a JML for a while and I'm currently into my sweet troll bois and gurlz. In our JML we open up the starting battlegroup options substantially by allowing people to build a 0 point battle group around a selection of warcasters/warlocks. For trolls I figured I'd keep it simple and just start with Ragnor a Mauler + Axer and eventually build into KC because I need an excuse to finish painting some of those models. Here is what I was planning on building into but I'm concerned two battle engines are a bit much for newer players, wanted to see if others agreed. conflictchamber.com/?c7201b_-1tfL9Des0hjqpk6R0l0mfKc86ehUhUTrollbloods [Theme] Kriel Company !!! This army contains a pre-release entry. In my experience, battle engines can be intimidating for newer players. Then again, it really depends on how you plan to play as well. If you are playing more the role of coach to some newer players, it might be a safe place for them to learn how to deal with a BE heavy list. If you are playing to win every game, maybe tone it down if you dont want to scare them off.

Is the inclusion of the third War Wagon a typo?
I’ve been eyeing Ragnor double Wagon personally, and it feels like a bit much in JML. Haven’t tested it though, so can’t be sure.

First have to say, that Mauler+axer is illegal 0p list as list is only allowed to be 4p short.
But for the the double war wagon question, as moridamn said it depends on how competitive you JML league is. If its for getting new players to game, two BE is too much, but if it's more "old players get reason to paint models", then go for it. Meta is definitely going to battle engines, so it is good to learn to play against them.

Our JML's are kind of a mix of older players and new/returning players dabbling in the game. By the time I'd have both battle engines I would be playing to win, still coaching players and asking them what they're goals are with clearly bad movements but playing to win. So yeah... 2 battle engines is probably a bit excessive, I've played something similar as a competitive list so I probably shouldn't get close to that in a JML... I've already earned the "Newb Crusher" moniker (not one I particularly want) from an unfortunate decision to bring 2 thrones with lylyth 1 in an old JML... jarrow -5 pts is fine, check the bottom of page 20 in the warroom 2 pdf end of first paragraph of "Encounter Levels" in the "Preparing For War" section Think this is more approachable? Trollbloods [Theme] Kriel Company !!! This army contains a pre-release entry. It really depends on what you Aims are. If you are looking for an interesting tournament format between grizzled veterans, then this is fine (and the limitations are also set this way because of the very liberal BGs). If this is in any way an attempt of getting people (back?) to the game, I would be a little more strict. If you are trying to fish for new players, none of them will come back. In the latter case I would build way too soft to get them in a conformable environment, not a shark tank!

So we kind of have a mish mash of player types for these events, everything from new players to players who've played consistently since mk1. As far as list construction options go thats already set in stone and released to the wild as the league starts this Sunday. I tend to allow players some options for building lists but have done my best to restrict it from casters who might be completely oppressive for new players (e.g. strong control casters or near guaranteed assassinations in every game).
Generally when I play in these events I try to play straightforward lists and provide a lot of insights on what I'm doing simply so the newer players can learn and have a decent time.
My goal here is simply to create a list that fulfills two roles: it isn't oppressive for a new player to play against AND a list I can stomach playing for 9 weeks since I almost always end up playing the most games during these leagues to make sure players get games in. I've come to the conclusion that double WW falls under the category of oppressive for a new player but I'm not sure that a single BE in the last weeks of the league would. However, history has suggested to me I'm not the greatest judge of whats "oppressive" for a new player.

I think the goal of a JML list should be that it should be fun to play WITH and to play AGAINST. That way you can have fun, and newer players can have fun too, even if they lose. Is this list fun to play WITH and AGAINST?

It seems fun to play with imo.
How fun it is to play against I'm no good at judging. Its doesn't seem like a bad list but I also don't want to play an obviously bad list. I'm not a big fan of playing terrible lists at the end of a JML because its a bit of a disservice to the players when the league concludes and I release them out into the waters only to get gobbled up by a shark playing a well tuned Harbinger list. I don't think the either list is overly rough but especially not the single war wagon version. I'm not bringing anything in that list that tells them they don't get to use the rules on their toys I'm just presenting some decent shooting and some difficult to remove pieces.
On the plus side the list even includes some models that haven't seen a ton of play.

As a retired PG, I love Highlander lists, like yours above. Maximum exposure to diverse models/rules VS spam lists. Good for new players to see! The list does not seem oppressive, but will be a challenging one to win/dominate with against experienced players who know how to mitigate KDs/ slams.
Go for it!
