I'm very new to the game (I have only played Syntherion), and only play casually, but I like taking a Monitor. The crit damage is unreliable, but obviously fantastic when it does happen. And it's a giant robot that shoots buzzsaw blades. I just.. find it too cool to not take one. I do agree with the sentiment that it may be a less efficient option than the Assimilator. If I was a competitive player, I'd give that more weight. Maybe I'll eventually become a tournament player, but until then, I will enjoy the mind game of threatening massive damage on a heavy early in the game.

I do really think Mother is their home. On feat turn RAT 8 means more possible crit combinations. Fire Group really lets them reach out, and the dark horse is that Sustained Attack really helps to overcome MAT 5 on non-feat turns. I would not probably play them with Syntherion.

Sorry, I am not following, how does RAT8 on feat turn help the Monitor have more possible crit combinations?

Because at rat 5, double 2's doesn't hit defense 12 so therefore isn't a critical hit. While at rat 8, double 2's hits a def 12 so is a critical hit.
