I wanted to start this thread for some time and now seems a good opportunity. Many players have one thing or another against specific models that are praised by the community or that, at least, can be found in several lists around. Today my pick is the loved four legged vector named Monitor
I really never seen it perform well in my games, I am not too fond of him and this might be only a point of view but it seems expensive on what he can do if we compare with the Assimilator. I am really thinking about changing my Monitors to Ciphers/Inverters! Maybe a good idea?
Do you guys have lists or ideas were a Monitor is indispensable?
Let's see what we can come up about this little Big Brother!

Overall yes, the monitor lacks a ton of value over the assumilator. The only real selling points are steady, slightly longer range with possible brutal shots, and sustained attack on the fist. I run one, soley because I lack a second floating chassis. Magnitize him if you can as hopefully some day it will receive some love.

I really try to include a Monitor in my lists, I love the anti-stealth the range and the crit-brutal damage, but for 16 points, hitting only once (even with possibly 4 dice on damage) is a bad trade against the Groundpounder of the Assimilator.

His issue is that his ruleset overlaps the Assimilator too much and their damage is far too comparable (for the sake of argument lets ignore crits as you need to a) waste a focus to fish for them or b) only get them 40% of the time). Comparatively the Assimilator is better because with him you gain: Pathfinder, 1+ SPD, -2 RNG, same POW, +1 DEF, -1 ARM. Also he ignores concealment, elevation and melee bonus not just Stealth. Granted the Monitor does completely ignore LOS in regards to cloud effects, but the Assimilator isn't left in the dust.
The rules for LOS regarding Ground Pounder are that as long as any part of the AOE is within his LOS and completely within his RNG he can legally place it. This basically means you can put the front edge of the AOE inside the cloud up to 2.99" inside. Given that the AOE itself is an additional 4" you can hit a lot of things behind the cloud.

Including a Monitor could be good as a frontline bait/distraction piece while the Assimilators steadily pound things into the ground. The Monitor's (slightly) higher ARM and Steady makes it a bit more survivable in this role. Also, I love the idea of pulling off the odd Arc Node shenanigans when paired with Directrix, e.g. casting Shrapnel Swarm through a cloud.

I struggle to find any use for the mobitor that assimilator is not better for. One thing i have not since mentioned is that for a ranged heavy the monitor cannot even induct 3 focus along the line like every other ranged heavy we have. It is simply worse in its current incarnation. But it is so obviously worse tht i have faith rhat it will get looked at so i do not worry myself about it.

So, I have been running a Mom list with 3 Assim and 2/3 Monitor. Here are my observations:
1 - The range difference doesn't seem like much at first, but it is pretty huge. It forces heavier targets/casters to hang even further back, and it gives you the extra positioning wiggle room to get more shots on a single target. Excellent into assassinations.
2 - Having only 1 is terrible, which compounds the issue - 2+ Monitors is a significant investment.
3 - I wouldn't want them INSTEAD of Assimilators, but alongside of them they are fine. There are always targets for both.

I feel like the Monitor should have at least have "Reload". That would certainly help with making them able to use and induct three focus. I feel "Reload" and "Powerful Attack" might be a bit too much, especially if it kept Critical:Brutal Damage.

I think a Monitor or two can be useful in ADR. It's nice to have them in the odd situation where you go up against things like High Reclaimer or Haley3 where they have a cloud wall in front of their army. Assimilators can get most of their ground pound on the other side of the wall, but not as far as a Monitor can get his shot. The problem though is that Assimilators are more useful 99% of the time.

I think you need to factor in the +4 boxes as well as the arm difference. The monitor is significantly more survivable

There are times when it will matter more often than others for sure

The lower speed and lack of pathfinder makes the Monitor's case even worse. If the weapons were switched and the walker frame had Ground Pounder we might be in a totally different argument.

The lower speed and lack of pathfinder makes the Monitor's case even worse. If the weapons were switched and the walker frame had Ground Pounder we might be in a totally different argument Pathfinder is easily achievable. You are taking OpD, right? And the slower speed is offset by longer range on the gun. Into melee it really depends on the target. Sustained attack really helps against higher defense targets.

Good points, but that -1 SPD means he's only running 8" and charging 1 less, so he might be losing out on 3" of movement that the Assimilator could easily gain.
