Hi guys, I was playing against Cygnar the other day, and my opponent had a Thunderhead which used its energy pulse attack. I had an important solo in the AoE and a shield guard unit 3'' away from my solo but outside of the AoE, the question is : can I use shield guard to save the solo? My gut says no , but it is a ranged attack nonetheless.

The shield guard model doesn't need to be in the affected area, it just needs to be within 3" of the model directly hit. Normally AoE refers to an attack using the 3, 4, or 5" templates, and if your solo was not the target but still hit by one of these, you could not shield guard it.
But energy pulse is an auto-hit for everything within 6" instead:
Since your solo was directly hit by a ranged attack, you could shield guard this hit.
