I’d like to hear your thoughts on merc support after the the Themepocopalooza drops at Gen Con. Assume for the sake of argument that there aren’t any “balance changes” to merc models.
In the current meta, I rarely reach for a merc solo, and never reach for a merc unit. I used to reach for A&H, but since the Graylord Adjunct dropped I‘d rather have eyeless sight, magic attacks and a free upkeep for 4 points vs. the A&H toolkit for 12 points.
The overriding factors for me have been (a) I dislike support bloat, and (b) the choice to bring merc of any sort often precluded optimizing free models. The new theme rules eliminate the second concern, which might be enough to rethink mercs.
On the flip side, we don’t know which themes will allow Valachev. We know Jaws doesn’t. It’s also possible, then, that any merc unit might need to stand on it’s own without caster support. (Darn it, but LOS is really the theme that needs that option too).
Discuss.

Well, the Valachev change doesn't affect the solos so I imagine the popular ones like Alexia2, Ragman, Saxon, etc. will still be just as popular.
I think Alexia1 will still be seen in Wolves. Maybe SH Riflemen in LoS, as they are completely deficient in shooting atm. Hard to say what may rise and fall, but I'm not sure that most units would make the cut without being FF

I like the *idea* of Ragman but can’t seem to find the points to put him in lists. I feel the same about Orin and Eilish. Perhaps I should ply these solos more. I haven’t yet tried Alexia 1 with Doomreavers. Should I?

Well as far as solo goes, there are a couple that are pretty interesting and they don't care about faction stuff, Alexia2, Ragman, the Thamarchon are all models I could see myself taking.
Losing Valachev hurts but a lot of the oblivion stuff is fairly self sufficient, I could see myself at least try a unit of vigilant and glyn cormier in legion of steel to bring some shooting to the match. I could also see myself try the legion of lost souls with Alexia3 in winterguard kommand to give a solid melee unit in a list that sorely lacks it. Vigilents and legion of lost souls don't care about support that much.
We will also have to see where the theme benefits of our unspoiled theme end up, it could help our theme that are lacking like legion of steel.

I like Rags in Armor Corp. I think it allows you to take one of our more defensive/ARM buffing casters and still get the output that you need with, for example, Shocks.
