Hey guys, so seeing the change to themes coming up I started wondering about the Irregulars theme and how desireable it is for merc casters right now and going forward. After being the non-plus-ultra theme for all but a few casters in the past i feel like it has seen quite the deconstruction lately. First the nerf to freebie threshhold, combined with the advent of a new competitively viable theme in Soldiers of Fortune, combined with the introduction of extremely good non-character solos. Then the Talion CiD which gave us another somewhat viable jack theme and yet another viable non-character solo. Next the Archons and Flames in the Darkness came along, which are yet another reason for many caster not to play irregulars.
And finally, any theme will generate freebies off of jack in the future, and rumor has it Advance Move will be taken from most themes, meaning Irregulars doesn't even fill in the role of a jack theme anymore.
All of this seems to me like Iregulars has a tough standing right now and going forward, unless PP gives it an amazing benefit replacing Advance Move.
So my question is; are you still happily playing irregulars? If so, with which casters? Do you think this will change when the theme changes hit and which benefit do you think Irregulars will be given to replace Advance Move if said rumors are true?
You guys undoubtedly all have more experience with the game than I do, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.

A lot will depend on the other benefits come in to play. Thematically, I'd probably run MacBain with my Kayazy and Nyss Hunters with that Theme's name, and I'm not sure if Jack-Heavy Magnus in Kingmakers' would make more sense than in the classic Irregulars.
My stable isn't quite robust enough to run a full Steelheads list without going Jack Heavy (one of each unit, and none built, yet).

Irregulars still has the broadest availability of units, many of which aren't available in any other theme.

I wouldn't be suprised to see Irregulars lose most of its units that are in other themes (Steelheads, Pirates, Rhulic) and become charecter units only plus Idrians and Kayazy.

Irregulars still has the broadest availability of units, many of which aren't available in any other theme. That is true, though like shoe said: You can count the good merc units on one hand and non of the good ones are so essential that playing in other themes becomes a no-no. Edit: But to further the conversation, which caster is particularly interested in the set of units Irregulars offers? I can think of Ossrum and Fiona. Ossrum for forge guard, Kayazy and Aiyana. Fiona for Croes, Forge Guard the morrowan stuff and Press Gangers, though I don't know if the latter would be a good list. Oh and I just relized you will be able to take Siege Crawlers in Irregs without losing free stuff. That's neat I guess.

MacBain likes to put Countermeasure on the Elminators, from what I understand...

The jack Marshal flank can become more relevant though too, so factor that in. Any caster who can support Jack's not in battlegroup can benefit from that. Devil dogs with freebooter, colbie and dirty Meg with talons or vanguard. I personally like having crosse 2 with a Marshal in the list. It may not be top tier but it can help in unexpected ways.

Jack MArshals do indeed seem to get better, given they apparently will be able to let their jack shake now as well.
However, given WGK has lost Advance Move on jacks without replacement, which makes me worried the same will happen to Irregulars. At that point it becomes rather hard to justify the theme at all imo.

Hard to justify the theme ? you mean beside that it is the only theme that would allow Idrians and Kayazy ?

OOOOOFF that Irregs spoiler... In all seriousness, how many have been playing Irregulars as a unit-based Theme?
I only consider it because most of my units could only play in Irregulars anyway (Nyss Hunters and 3 units of Kayazy). But I still have enough Jacks to still play it as a Jack Theme. As it is, Soldiers and Kingmakers I'd have to play as half-Jack right now because I only own 3 Steelhead units. I'd still want to get another unit of Halberdiers, an Arcanist, a Gunner, and a couple Gun Crews before I'd consider any full Steelhead build.
