Round 1 against Protectorate of Menoth
Recon II
My cunning plan works and Gaspy 2 & Venny scare off Harby and HR, even though they're secretly not that great. Thyra vs Skarre 3 it is. I understand his pick because of the tech in the list, but it's a matchup that I know and all I need to do is not die, which is what happens.
There was one moment where he could get Blood of Martyrs onto Skarre camping a bunch by side stepping off Ragman, but he misses both initials. It was doubtful I would die, but it would definitely have hurt. I take BoM in retaliation and clog up the way to Skarre. He tries to get Thyra on me by overtaking, but the bases are in an awkward position and the flag is in the way.
His church failed to do anything of note the whole game, except reviving some Cinerators.
I table him and win on scenario.
Round 2 against Circle Orboros
Standoff
Morvahna and Bradigus worry me, so I drop Lich. He drops Baldur. This is bad for me, but I figure I can at least negate his feat.
Matchup is still really bad as he can contest for days with Death Wolves and has a forest to keep his caster safe. I start to lose on attrition but see an opportunity to get 4-5 feat banes onto Baldur camping 2, which is all I've got so I try to roll hard 8s (lost BLT to LotF earlier). I fail and that's basically it.
I should've recognised that he was unlikely to drop Morv and gone for Skarre 3, who would've done better on attrition.
Not sure if I would've won, but it would've helped, especially without the Well.
Round 3 against Khador. Should be easy, right?
Spread the Net
I figured he wouldn't drop his jack lists and think I can manage Sorscha 1 with Skarre based on a prior game I had against a Doom Reaver spam under Sorscha, but boy was I wrong. The Outriders means lots of stuff dies and the Kraken and Skarre alone don't do enough to make up for my army being Stationary and getting sprayed all over while being recycled into Doom Reavers.
I had lost the roll to go first and there was a house in the middle for Sorscha to stand behind.. I don't think there was anything I could've done there. These are dark times indeed if we need to fear Khador.
He handily beats me on scenario.
Round 4 against Protectorate of Menoth
Mirage
Great, Protectorate again, but to my surprise, this guy also doesn't drop Harby and instead it's Skarre 3 against Amon.
I chip away against his jacks, but he's winning on my non-zone flank. On the flank that actually matters, I can chip at his 4 Crusaders with my infantry and, after moving Skarre just out of book range and not kill boxing, get Draconic Blessing on the Kraken. Between the Kraken, Axiara and Gerlak, I take his 4 heavies. He didn't really use Enliven to full effect this game.
He only used it once and I forced the move by shooting with Skarre. After that, he only used the Vassals for Empower.
He tries to take back my Kraken by putting a Crusader in it, but it was only on Synergy 2 because his 1 jack with crippled cortex and 1 arm couldn't hit a Bloodgorger. He left it on 3 boxes after not rolling anything under a 4 per dice on damage, so I guess it balances out. I repair and take his Crusader back.
He eventually clocks himself, basically on purpose. He was ahead on scenario at that point, but I had killed the book and the majority of his jacks, so it was about to swing around and I had plenty of time.
So I go into day 2 at 2-2, thinking I'll be happy if I can win 2 more and ecstatic if I happen to end 5-2.
Next round is posted and I see I'm playing against Convergence of Cyriss with Orion, Axis and Lucant as an infantry build. This scares me, because it's basically a giant list chicken.
I eventually decide he will most likely drop Orion as it has the best game into my lists on average. I might as well see what happens with Skarre 3.
After worrying about this basically the whole night, I check the pairings again in the morning and they have changed to
Round 5 against Circle Orboros
Pit II
I figure I should drop Venny and he will probably drop Una, which is exactly what happens. I win the roll to go first, which is huge, keep everything outside 16" of the big birds (charge range with Hunter's Mark and feat) but fail to account for the 17" shooting threat with Skyfire and lose 2 Scavengers.
I move up some more and shoot his Blackclad with the Desecrator (puppet master helps) and Venny kills the Lord of the Feast that took out a Slayer the turn before.
I lose lots to the two Raptors and some help of the Gryphones on his feat turn, so put puppet master on WSC to get a Mortality on the closest big bird (didn't need the reroll), fully load my last remaining heavy, the Harrower, who charges in with Terminal Velocity and catches 2 Gryphons in the Thresher. I leave the bird on 10 or so. I fail to finish it with the Ripjaw, because it doesn't crit on 2 boosted attacks. I feat, put a generated Scrap Thrall B2B with the crippled raptor and pop 3 in the middle of his 3 Gryphons.
Healthy raptor frenzies onto my objective, but rolls poorly and it even survives. The crippled raptor doesn't bother to frenzy, crap.
One of the Gryphons frenzies and blows up the three scrap thralls which kills it and mauls the other 2.
The other Gryphons then take out the Harrower, which is already severely damaged from plasma nimbus. The raptor takes a free strike from the crippled Ripjaw (also plasma nimbus) and that leaves it on 3. Ripjaw then dies to Una.
Venny gets puppet master because I need him to take out the raptor and hit an unboosted attack on the last gryphon (the other gets engaged by the shrike, but fails to do anything useful) Maelovus fails to hit the 5 he needs to Mortality the remaining raptor which makes Admonia's Dark Fire fail to damage, which makes the Scavenger too light to take out an aspect. Ironically, Venny didn't even need his reroll 😒 Everything went wrong at the wrong time. Venny on 2 camp then dies to Una and raptor shots. If the raptor had lost an aspect under mortality, I probably would've lived and killed Una.
Round 6 against Minions
Invasion
I figure he won't drop Maelok or Rask when Gaspy 2 is present and figure Venny is best against Barnabas 2. My opponent agrees and that's what we get.
I let go of a top of 2 assassination after he puts a 3 camp Barnabas within 12 of a Harrower and in charge range of 2 Scavengers, one which needs to go before the Harrower because he's in the way. I can probably get Mortality on him with Maelovus. I don't go for it because I figure he will just transfer the Harrowers attacks and the Scavengers can't do it.
I should've done it and feated, so even if he survives he will be at 0 fury with the only way to get any being using his feat to be able to reave and he's staring at a Harrower. Come to think of it, he probably would've died anyway. In short, I deserve what happens next. I instead try to shoot Edrea, but miss and charge some Scavengers into Bone Swarms that don't do much. I hide Venny behind the Harrower, trying to bait him.
He kills his own stuff to use the pot to fill up Barny.
He pays 4 to get Hunter's Mark on the Harrower, needing an unboosted 5, and charges it, I counter charge my ripjaw B2B, blocking LoS again to Venny and my opponent thinks it's all over. He then 2 shots the Harrower and feats to full by blowing up his own beasts to reave (I forgot he could do that) and easily kills Venny through my 4 camp with high rolls.
Well, that sucked, but it's my own fault.
So, now I'm 2-4, feeling pretty bad about myself and I lost the previous 2 games to my own inexperience with the list and basically dice.
Imagine my "happiness" when I find out that in
Round 7 I get paired against Protectorate of Menoth again,
on Standoff.
This time the guy does actually drop Harby and even wins the roll, choosing to go second. Harby going second on Standoff; I'm so Firetrucked.
Or am I? This guy is probably the worst Harbinger player I've ever faced, never using reposition on the Idrians and only once on his Champions. He doesn't purify off Draconic Blessing on the Marauders, so I can just ignore his feat, throw the one contesting monk out of my zone with a MAT 10 Kraken, so I can counter-score, and can even get to the Guide, which is outside of Martyrdom, with 1 overtake, which I of course whiff... I actually forgot Vengeance this turn, which is totally my bad and doesn't help me at all.
I slowly grind him down, though I miss the throw on the monk the second time which allows him to get ahead on scenario. I should've actually attacked as Harby was getting low, but apparently that stupid ability is my responsibility to keep an eye on.
I'm low on time, Harby is on 1 hp and I forget to do anything with the Marauders, so I don't contest, allowing him a bigger lead. A monk and champ are both on fire and they can't be martyred anymore, but of course both go out. Note that his 9 initiates were never even used, except to kill 1 model. I was really, really pissed after that one. If there was ever a game to win against Harby, this was it. I should've played faster and better, but the game just never went my way.
So, 3 games I should've/could've won, 1 where I dropped the wrong list and 1 where I never stood a chance. I got unlucky, playing against PoM 3 times and Circle twice, I have a high SOS for only getting 2 wins, but the fact remains that I ended at 2-5 😠One thing I think I did well was gauge potential matchups and drop the list that was best against his likely drop, which is not easy in a 3-lister. I only messed up in round 2, and I had my doubts even before he revealed Baldur, should've stuck with my instincts.
That being said, I think I can handle Harby if I change Skarre 3 to double Marauders, because she'll have trouble keeping everything alive between Vengeance and all the fire, but I will still need to practice the hell out of it and get only a 50/50, maybe. That build also probably works against Tharn.
That Venny list definitely has potential and it did well when I expected it to, failing only to my own inexperience (I had only played the list once). However, I don't think it works as a pair to Skarre 3 in a 2 list environment as I have nothing to force out ARM and there are other ways to force out Makeda 3, which is why I'm starting to look at Skarre 1 DH.
For the record, best in Cryx was still at place 14 at 5 wins, so the faction isn't all bad, just me
