I understand what it does, but magnus is slow and a bit fragile to run far enough forward to really catch a lot of models with it.
So how do I utilize it?
also, they can still change facing right?

As for the how to utalize the feat. I want you yo answer these questions. What did you build your Magnus 2 list to do? What list would you like to see on the table to play into? What is your lists greatest strength and weakness. Magnus 2 works good into armies with fewer models or armies who realy on an alpha to do work. Examples: Black industries lists. They have lower model counts but are fast and struggle on open scenrio as they focus more on melee damage. Great for magnus 2 feat. Vlad 2 man o war lists with feated troopers. If they can not advance towards you they can not do damage. Choosing your deployment edges can be used to funel opponents were you want them |

Things to think about:
1 - Magnus2 isn't that squishy. ARM21 in melee (base 17 + Unyielding + Escort) is tanky for a caster, especially if you're camping a few. Add in Bullet Dodger for DEF16 and moving away without free strikes and he isn't that easy to kill (don't let him get knocked down - a jack with Lash in B2B is great for him, as it keeps his DEF up and gives him +2 ARM from Escort).You can always add a Shield Guard (Rover) or threatening counter-charge heavy (Toro) to make him a less attractive target.
You can afford to take a (sensible) risk with him, especially if it looks like doing so will let you leverage the feat will get you the scenario win. It's a risk/reward calculation, but worth remembering.
2 - The obvious use of the feat is to stop your opponent's advance. But you can use the feat to give a benefit in just a single scenario zone by picking one of the side edges. If an opponent has lighty contested a zone, remove the opposing models that are in it and then use the feat to block off the approach angles by picking two edges at right angles to one another. That can work wonders in giving you the scenario edge, especially against lower model count armies.
3 - The threat of the feat can be enough to cause opponents to do suboptimal things, like advancing into threat ranges because they are worried about being locked out of scenario by the feat. This can be very valuable.
4 - Some opponents can try to ride out the delay the feat imposes, so having something in the list that can do work against an opponent who is happy playing further back can be valuable. That means longer ranged guns. For your list, I'd consider a Mariner over the Rover for that reason.
5 - The feat works well if you have already applied scenario pressure. Irregulars is good for that with the benefit to jacks. I would consider a Freebooter (or two, but that probably requires a major list rework). With Magnus2's field marshall they are pretty durable for their cost in melee, and can really get up the board. Grab and Smash can also be handy on scenario (free throws to get things out of zones).
6 - Remember that you can feat and then fail-charge with Magnus to get him up the field as the feat takes effect from his current position, not the location at which he feated. In theory that charge could also benefit from Hunter's Mark to give you a 10" charge move.
7 - Anastasia is gold for Magnus2. Being more likely to get the first turn makes a big difference to him as it really helps with scenario. You really need to have a good reason not to take her in a Magnus2 list.

Why Meg (or any other jack marshall)? Magnus2 has a great battlegroup spell and field marshall ability. You really need a very good reason to take jacks out of his battlegroup. The Mariner is a good jack to have in the battlegroup because you can use it to hang back, give Magnus the ARM bonus from Escort and keep him standing using Lash. You don't get the ARM bonus if the jack is marshalled. Irregulars does give a bonus for marshalled jacks, but it isn't something you really want to try and utilise too much (marshalled jacks still tend to underperform in melee unless you can give them one or more of a free charge and focus from something like Empower).
I'd agree with ditching Sylys. The free upkeep is nice, but not worth a free spot/4 points equivalent. Calamity might merit Arcane Secrets given you have a Renegade, but using Calamity tends to leave Magnus quite low on Focus/not giving focus to his jacks.
Losing Sylys, Meg and the Tinkers gives you 7 points and a free solo. Lots of good possible solos for the list: Ragman gives more ARM cracking which works with the 2" melee on the Nomads, Hutchuck can work nicely as an Ambushing threat with Anastasia, Orin or Elish are always useful to have around. The 7 points could get you a jack (Talons are decent with Magnus2 as an ARM 20 light) or you could also drop the Deck Gun, upgrade to a Horgenhold Mortar and have 4 points for a solo or two (or maybe 1 Tinker and upgrade two Nomads to Toros). Lots of flexibility there (which is the upside of Irregulars moving to max 3 free slots).

Take aim is the reason for the martialed Mariner. Its the most powerful ability to that javk placing it as +2 rng damage rolls.
With a base pow 14 and 3 inch aoe (4 if cid sticks) its a good call for 3 points more. Thats not including its other options.
Strike true lets all of its attacks gain a +2 to hit melee or range and works good into medium infantry with its 1 inch (2 if cid sticks) thresher attack.
Crush makes it pow 19 eith an extra melee (flank bonus) should cripple beyond repair any modle it need to beat down

To echo what other people have said, I traditionally like to rush him to the middle and use the feat to deny as much of the board as possible, hoping to get the needed victory points without ever having to fight. As a result, I'm skipping things like A&H because I don't really care about damage buffs; I'm not going to fight much anyway.

Using Magnus2’s feat is very simple.
Just make sure you’re in Magnus’s activation, and you haven’t run or failed a charge, and say “I use my feat.”

To echo what other people have said, I traditionally like to rush him to the middle and use the feat to deny as much of the board as possible, hoping to get the needed victory points without ever having to fight. As a result, I'm skipping things like A&H because I don't really care about damage buffs; I'm not going to fight much anyway. kiss scares, i need units for adv move etc. so namdsare +5 up field and i get their toolkit , including magic weapons as needed... |

Flank is hellastronk with things like crush. A mariner is a mini mangler with thresher! |

War Room Army Mercenary - Move it magnus!! I run either a Renegade or Sylys with Magnus2. Lately, it's just Sylys and no Renegade. Sylys puts the range on Calamity to 12", which I find more than sufficient. Without needing the arc node, the Renegade is an overpriced one-shot rocket. My go-to ranged jack marshal is Thor with an Avalancher. It's 4 points more than Meg + Mariner, but basically gives you a Renegade rocket every turn. I don't understand where Pendrake fits into the list. There's no good target for Beast Lore (Kayazy are accurate enough and no other warriors hit hard enough to use the accuracy). Gorman or Hutchuk would be better options if you're looking to improve accuracy. |

I love the renegade when the chainsaw goes off. the rocket is just funsies.  as far as pendrake it is for high def shenanigans that I fear from circle. I like having him there in case I NEED to hit that thing. |
