So, besides Mortenebra being in Hearts of Darkness and access to some sort of anti-Infernal solo, we got the Void Archon. At first sight, he's not that impressive; he's got some nifty abilities, but costs 8 points, taking the place of Overlords or a Stalker, both of which have some overlap with him, but not counting towards points and taking up the Merc slot.
He has Flight, Dark Shroud, Divine Manifestation (non-living, no KD, no Blind), Dual Attack, Entropic Force, Soul Taker: Spectral Scavenger (Soul Phase, Strength of Death), Soul Ward and Void Walk. There's also a single melee attack and a good spray.
Now, he has a lot of special rules, but to me it still seems like a hard sell for 8 points in the Mercenary slot. He can charge into something and teleport somewhere else to spray and project Dark Shroud and Entropic Force, so that's great, but I think some extra defensive tech such as Soul Storm, cool utility such as Direct Spirits (then Cryx can finally get some sweet souls from friendlies) or at the very least the ability to buy extra melee attacks with Death-Powered.
What do you guys think?

For 8 points, he needs to be survivable, but that being said, he does bring a lot of special rules in one basket and is almost like a lord of the feast...who admittedly is (6 points or) free in themes that want him. I would certainly give him a try.
This was news to me today, that Mortenebra would be included in the infernalist camp. I guess it kind of makes sense with her ex-CoC story line of innovation and power at any sacrifice. Where she basically catches an iron lich, dissects it and eventually turns herself into one. I didn't know anything about the Void Archon but I am not well connected with the latest news.

tiberius They keep stressing that inclusion in the Hearts of Darkness theme does not necessarily mean that those characters are actually infernalists. It's more of a "what if" situation if they had gotten a little nudge at the right time.

Ah, so its more of the for funsies, alternate reality, story driven arc. Gotcha. I have no problems with that.

So, he just picked up an extra melee initial, meaning it's unlikely that he also gets Death-Powered. At least it's not possible to use a full stack of souls on his initials, so that's something.

So, for anyone interested, the Void Archon has no changes since week 1, except inclusion in a bunch of themes. Nothing for Cryx though.

The model is interesting, but I see 0 reason to ever include it in a list over Hermit of Hengehold. Hermit is half the cost, and provides so many amazing buffs to Cryx I can’t think of many lists where I’d ever use my Merc slot on something else.

So the hermit is what? Just a better ragman?

So the hermit is what? Just a better ragman? Not strictly better, but pretty damn good. I wrote a rather lengthy post about my thoughts on the Void Archon in the CID forums. I played him 3 times (BI, Scourge, DH) and he seems to work best when he can get friendly souls, which means we're kind of bummed already. Even then he doesn't do anything with those souls except boosting, so support is non-existent. He slots decently into a Scourge list, but I feel he will be hard to squeeze into SFR because that theme already brings a lot of tools and you're often strapped for points, and a mercenary slot. So, I really want to like him, but I'm not sure if he'll ever be "good enough" for Cryx, especially considering his relatively fragile frame, compared to some other Archons.

So how did our Void Archon end up turning out? I played against the Menite one yesterday and it was an absolute beast. A 2" grevious wounds thresher...just to start.

Ah, I didn't know if CID had published any final rules for them. Not a problem. Like I said, this thing was a beast. It had the stats of a heavy warjack and hit like one too (DEF 13? ARM 19, 2" reach thresher with grevious wounds and was hitting up around P+S 15 for one attack and the other one was not quite as hard at 13). It could get +2 ARM and STR and vengeance when something friendly to it died around it, which was pretty much every turn. It could fly, immune to knockdown and blind, immune to fire and it gave +2 to fire damage rolls. 15 wounds. All for 8 points. Ashen veil, something like signs and portents for itself, MAT 8, prevents souls to enemies and dispel on its sword. It single handedly held a flank against me. It took a heavy and a light with boosts to drop it. It didn't help that he had Tristan 2 as his caster and their battle engine continuously doing healing pulses. I mean any dedicated attempt to drop it will take it down, but it is well worth its 8 points I think. Especially when I didn't know what I was up against and how much I would need to dedicate to take it down.

The problem with the Void Archon is going to be that it can only collect friendly souls in Scourge of the Broken Coast, but it's included in Dark Host instead. This makes thematic sense, because fluff wise it's a kind of Bane, but not functional. If it can't take friendly souls, it must put itself in harm's way to collect. If it doesn't collect souls, it's not too great and it's not sturdy enough to put itself in danger very often. It's balanced around peeking out, killing some stuff and teleporting back, otherwise it will struggle to make its points.
I can't check the final CID rules right now, but I recall it being 14/17 (maybe 18) with 10 boxes, MAT 7, RAT 6. 2 Initials at P+S 13, a POW 14 10" spray, Dark Shroud, Entropic Force (no healing within 5") and Void Walker, allowing it to place itself within 8" after killing a model with any of its attacks. It also had Dual Attack and it could collect up to 3 souls within 10" that it can use only for boosting. Soul Ward was also on it, but since we don't collect friendly souls, that's utterly useless for Cryx. It's honestly a great package, but if he can't get souls before committing, he will struggle to do work without boosts.
If there aren't at least some changes, we will struggle to include it in lists, though it will be nice for the other factions that can take it, I suppose. On the one hand, I am hopeful that it might see another tweak or 2, on the other, it's the only one that barely changed through the entire CID process, so I think they were already quite happy with it. Time will tell.

Isnt that backwards to how most Cryx works? Collecting friendly souls? I thought they did away with that when people abused that with Asphyxious 2 and his march a unit of steel heads into his cloud trick to get all the souls. But I guess nothing else will be competing for the few souls then. Or is gather any souls? I guess we will see what the rule actually says later.
