First a recap. Next post will look for ideas ;-) Most importantly - had fun. It really is a cost effective and fun convention. Hotel is "meh" - I wish there was a better bar and the food options stink. Younger crowd (I am the old fart) seems to have fun and San Diego is a great place to visit (and live....you can't imagine how beautiful it is today and i am putting in spring plantings)
Played first day in Champions. Paired Vlad2 in Wolves and Irusk2 in AC.
Game 1 I won with mirror match convincing me that my need as an "experiential" learner is so evident in warmachine. Dropped the Wolves into Sorscha3 (he didn't want to play the mirror with my Victor). I knew precisely what to scalpal out and when and where. Something to think about - if you are struggling see if you can identify the synergy pieces in their lists that swing the dice math.
Game 2 - lost to Tom Guan playing Grymkin. No shame there. I tried Doomies into Child. Just couldn't break the brick and since Guan is one of the best players in the world got screwed in the Vlad match up when I didn't have a way of killing a discord Gorehound. ALMOST got it through with the Arcan mighted Koldun Lord fishing for the crit ;-)
Game 3 - Beat Makeda on Bottom of 2 with Feated eliminators. My fixation on AC with Vlad2 caused me to forget how good.
2-1 in masters and only the loss to guan. Happy.
<QUASI goes down from here ;-)
Champs -
Sorscha1 in Wolves (still figuring how to tweak this) and Vlad2 AC (Shocks, DC, Victor and then eliminators as mercs)
Champs Qual 1
G1 Good friend into Zadesh2. Grindy game. Doomies can't kill derp turle to save their soul. He rolls the hard 8 he needs with spear and I don't tough or else he is forced to trample to Beast 09 who likely lives. Made some mistakes. Ultimately lost on time when I couldn't pull off the assassination run.
G2. Another good friend. I like playing new people more so "meh". Gore 4. Dropped AC to remove clouds. VERY grindy Mirage Game but she successfully brought back destors. Eventually cleared out a ton of the sentinal screen but by then I was down on clock and with a slight scenario deficit. Not enough time to figure out plan to get back to it.
G3. Played into Lock and Convengence. Dropped Sorscha1. I wanted lunch. Won Roll. He moved 4 inches off deployment line and didn't screen her. Sorscha killed a naked locke. I got to eat.
Qual Round 2
G1. Moshar with a lot of Tharn shooting and a Bird. Spread the net (I hate that one) Drop mistake (I have never played Moshar ). I hoped to freeze a bunch of the Tharn and maybe go for the Assassination. Instead, I found out "fun things" like Sands of Fate shoot, teleport away, Cravass and other "fun things". Eventually got Sorscha killed but I was in trouble on scenario. (RANT ON - PILLARS SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CONTEST. THAT ISN'T AT ALL FAIR ON A CASTER WITH AN 18 INCH CONTROL RANGE. RANT OFF).
AC - I THINK is the better drop. Lets say I can't (for some unknown reason) keep covering fire in a place that works and that he preyed and cursed the shocks. They are still ARM 17 into the POW 9 weaponmaster Javelins on the Blood trackers. So average 2 dice. HOWEVER, at Range 7 it is trivial to put down the pie plate of nope in the right position. He DID have a Lord of Broken but no pot so only one corpse. I think I can put down other "stuff" so that he doesn't really have good landing pads for him in the back arc of the Shocks. Pillars are going to be a pain but I "THINK" I could have used Victor mini guns, altanas, democorps, etc. to keep the march going. Would like to play that one again.
G2 - Makeda. Rematch of game from Champs. He learned. Killed off a TON of doomreavers with the Makeda lawnmower. Felt good for him. He didn't put her in a good place however and she was naked. Koldun Lord and a ternion with the ice cages (he had the no freeze animus up), Brittle frost with the other. Sorscha goes and beats on her face.
G3 - Mirror. S1 vs. s1. What a dumb game. My opponent is another good friend. We are both bushed. He won on scenario. I probably won on clock since it was paused for like 15 minutes after a judges ruling when we both spaced. Lets call it an L with a moral victory (I like his list as he drops the second unit of Ternions, goes with Victor and fits in Alexia 1 for LOTS of Risen) ;-) Helps him really grind out scenario which means you can force your opponent to "come to you" when you have 30 doomreavers to great him.
So 2-4(3-3).
I like my lists a lot. I think I will likely move toward my friend's Sorsha1 list. The ternions are "OK" but I don't think the do nearly the work that Alexia would do. The cloud wall just isn't a thing. Still get 2 bad santas. Still get the Adjunct. Still get 2 UA's. Killing doomies is not NEARLY as effective. Spot RFP is probably worth it but an argument could be made to find a 4 point solo (for "fun" lets consider the Steelhead Arcanist to deal with Zadesh clouds in a HYSTERICAL manner) since you can't give doomies guidance.
Hope you enjoyed. Not sure it is that informative but, at the very least, a plug for KC.
