Hmm, if you lighten the flames they will “pop” a lot more than the anything does on the tanks and truck. Maybe that’s what you want for your monsters?

It really should be brighter than everything; it's the jet of flame from a rocket after all.
I was able to brighten the final piece slightly by expanding the yellow areas and painting pure white tinted with a saturated yellow glaze over the centers of the flames.
It would really benefit from some proper OSL on the surrounding areas, but that's beyond my skill.

I think what you need to kick up is the saturation, not the brightness. As it stands your flame looks too desaturated. Depending on the look you're aiming for OSL will help, but I suspect you're aiming for a lightless flame. I made a couple of quick edits to show what I mean. Top right is the original in each picture. You might also want to remove the shading from your flame, since fire naturally doesn't have a shadow. Adding a white hot core will also help, otherwise you end up like the guy in the second picture where it just looks like fancy sleeves. The paintjob's good on a technical level, by the way, it just doesn't send the right signals. Edit: little correction, I didn't realize the thread has 4 pages, for some reason the thread only showed me 3 pages until I posted. Whoops. You're on the right track, then.

That's an interesting point about the saturation, though you have to remember that what you see on your monitor is not neccessarily how the paint looks in real life. Adding colour saturation to paint without darkening it can be a little tricky, especially when working with what are actually several different colours. To your point about removing the darker shades: painted fire is not the same as real fire: it doesn't actually emit light, so you have to use tricks to make it look bright. Adding darker outlines can really help the main flame look brighter. And it's not quite as unrealistic as you might think: fire leads into smoke, so in real life fire often has a touch of darkness around it (eg cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/57068409/AP_17282592183596.0.jpg). Yes, I didn't model up smoke because that was too ambitious for me, but generally speaking painting flames that blend into dark colours, even black, can give a good effect. Having said that the darker colours did come out less pronounced in the final flame.

I'm aware a lot of minis have black smoke painted on them, but I was assuming you were aiming for something more akin to our chicken friend, hence smoke would detract from that specific kind of effect. Makes me curious now how different the photo is from the actual real deal, but I'll never get to know.

Has anyone ever looked at Defender X's legs? I mean REALLY looked at them? Go do that now. I'll wait.
...
Done? Great. Now imagine having edge-highlight that insane mass of edges. I think I spent at least three hours PER LEG on just the blue highlights. Sigh. Why do I do this again?
Anyway, just a few small fixes and touch-ups left (somehow got paint on that laborious flame effect and need to go back and fix it), then I can finally put down the varnish and call it done. You know, if everything goes well and I'm allowed a few evenings to myself. Fingers crossed.

I did that. It wasn’t so bad. Seriously mate, why did you feel the need to say that? I'm serious: what were you hoping to achieve? I'm genuinely struggling to get any painting done, it took a lot of time and effort for me to actually finish this damned model (well, almost finish). So yeah, I found it hard. You realise posting something like "it wasn't so bad" is just belittling my effort right? Aren't you the one who's always berating people online for not putting the effort in to growing the community? Some days I don't know why I bother painting OR trying to keep this forum active.

Anyway: I really wasn’t trying to belittle your frustration. I’ve edge highlighted Defender X and Sky Sentinel both, so I understand. You’ll make it through! Just persevere!
