Would a radar dish serve better than a rocket pod? It does buff the others, not itself. Don't get me wrong, I love the rocket pod! That was one of the ideas I originally considered (great minds think alike eh?), I just decided that a rocket pod felt more suitable on top of a tank than a big radar dish. Plus I'm planning on painting the rocket heads in red so that should help it stand out (I don't think red suits a radar dish). It kinda works thematically due to the fact that the elite tank has an extra attack dice too.

Took a break from trying to put a 40K list together to assemble this guy:

Finally got around to doing some actual painting. I'm having trouble deciding on where to put my colours. I wanted a semi realistic look for my tanks, but so far I just don't like the "feel" I'm getting from these:
I guess the biggest issue is the gun: when I paint it steel I feel like there's too much steel, when I paint it tan it feels strange that it doesn't stand out. What do you guys think?

Make the gun dark metal. Take a 50/50 black ink + mixing medium mix and put it on the barrel. I would also make the X bumper bars some other completely different color. Orange? Blue? Something that really contrasts the tan.

These are just the basecoats, everything is going to be washed and darkened, so dark metal won't stand out. I'm thinking of trying brass for the gun. I'm also considering blue glows in the gun vents, not sure how muxh that would help or how good it would look for such small details.
How about brass for the front X's?

I thought about it some more and maybe something dark brown, in the range of Umbral Umber or maybe Battlefield Brown, would look good on the X's.

Bleh, I am finding it really hard to get motivated to paint. Basically just wasting most of my time on Overwatch (I keep telling myself I'm going to quit) or manga (I keep telling myself I'm going to quit) or watching youtube videos on my phone (I keep telling myself... sigh). I don't know why, but my productivity is at an all-time low.
Anyway, I finally forced myself to do some painting today, and tried painting a third tank with some brass:
The idea here is that, while most of the tank would be painted or raw steel, the gun's heat shield would make sense in brass as it's a better thermal conductor. Or something. Basically since it's the primary "sci-fi" element of the tank, it looks OK in brass, while most other details would feel out of place in brass in my mind.
Which of the three colour schemes so far do you guys think looks the best? If it helps, I'm planning to wash them entirely in a brownish wash then pick out the lights (and maybe the vents on the cannon) with a blue glow.

The third definitely has the gun pop out the most.

So I guess this is the final colour scheme:
I'm not really happy about how the blue "glows" on the barrel turned out, but initially I only painted the front lights blue and it drew too much attention to an uninteresting part of the model, so I had to add blue to the barrel to balance it out.
It's not great but I guess it looks OK. Unless anyone has any suggestions, I'm going to just paint the rest in basically the same scheme.
On an unrelated note, lately every time I pick up an old bottle of paint I find it's dried out and I need to order a new one. I don't know why this has been happening now; some of these bottles are years old and some are much newer, some got used a lot and some were barely touched, but I've never had so many dry out at roughly the same time as is happening now. Maybe the new apartment's air is just really dry or something?

I like the blue on the gun better than on the lights, but the whole thing looks good to me.

I tried one last change. This time I left the gun unpainted and did the headlamps in simple dark/light yellow with no attempt at a glow:
I think I like this latest version the most. I think I'm going to paint the detail on the upper left of the turret the same way - it makes sense to have a spotlamp on the turret right?
