Komrades, it’s time for a proper list discussion thread dedicated to Wolves of Winter. There’s a lot of good discussion going on in other threads - enough so that it felt to me like we needed a proper place to theorycraft and relate our experiences at the table.
My go-to choice right now is Vlad 2, paired with Sorscha 3 in Armored Korp with double shock troopers. Between her cloudwall and high armor, Sorscha deals with shooting based infantry hate.
auraco and some others have a good discussion regarding Vlad 2 going on over HERE. My version of the list looks like this, while auraco maxes out the Outriders (which I might try).

I like my Vlad 2 list because I feel like it has a a really broad toolkit, an answer for everything, and a few good question. There are a few lists I want to try out, first among them being Old Witch 2. I’ve stacked in 3 Juggernauts to present a really hard counter - especially on Feat turn - to anyone who thought they’d weather the Doomreaver storm with high Armor. Fully loaded POW 23 Juggernauts with Divinator seem like a thing.
The only thing I dislike about this list is that I couldn’t seem to fit in a unit of Ternion, or a 2nd Escort. The missing Escort feels like a problem but I really don’t want to drop a Juggernaut down to a Rager (with Windstorm, that feels redundant), although perhaps it would be worthwhile to drop it to a Berserker which would free up the points for both an Escort and a Tinker. Hmm...

Some folks don’t like spam. I do. When I play Winterguard, I feel naked if I don’t have at least 6 rockets in my army. So, I’ve been pondering which caster will have the most luck spamming Doomreavers and keep coming back to Irusk 2 because of his feat, which solves all of your terrain problems and accentuates what Wolves does best (crush scenario), and the obvious infantry buffs.
I’ve tried a list quite similar to this once, and supertough doomreavers are soul crushing. It needs more playtesting, but I don’t get in enough games to do proper playtesting so would love your thoughts if you’ve been rocking the Supremem Kommandant and a horde of madmen.
So, the dark horse candidate that I want to try (but have not) is Vlad 3. I know the general consensus on him is that he’s kinda hot garbage, but let me theory craft this out.
- His feat is actually really good on jacks with multiple attacks, Fenris (potentially ball busting), and his own good self. It seems completely legitimate on a unit of Outriders with HoF if you have a Koldun Lord near enough by (and you can run one 14” though traffic to have him deliver his Leadership another 9” out...)
- Dash on a hoarde of doomreavers seems completely legit. Parry ont top of a berserking 12” - 14” threat seems really good.
- Wind Wall can keep some important stuff safe, including Fenris. In terms of dominating scenario, your opponent is going to have to think hard about the personal threats from both Vlad and Fenris sitting in the middle of the table, not to mention either Drago, who I included for double initials plus berserk and side step...seems legit.
- Blood quenched got a little better for Vlad.
QUESTION - am I thinking about Side Step on Drago the right way? Charge in, attack, kill something, side step, berserk attack, side step, berserk attack, and so on until you run out of dudes...
OK, that’s all for now. Too many good options, and not enough playing time.
