I stress “battlegroup box only” because new players already have enough stuff to remember during a demo game. Adding units, command range, orders, and whatnot can tip the scales into “confusion” quite easily.
I have seen it happen too many times. New players don’t like feeling dumb for assuming that they can allocate focus to solos/units, only to be told “no”.
After the demo, I will point out units and solos exist, and I’ll explain about them if the player asks, but I would never include them in the demo. You’re trying to keep the introduction light, fast, and fun, after all!

Battle Box only is a pretty horrible introduction to the game. Especially since the battle boxes are horribly balanced and some factions don't even work properly without additional models...
Of course, since it's a demo game you could choose two of the more balanced ones that don't require other models. Still, I think it would be better to have 15 points or something and make some actual sensible lists to demo with...

They aren't there for balance, dude. They're there so someone can learn the rules! Usually the person running the demo loses, no matter how unbalanced the battle boxes may be in their favour.

My only (extremely minor) issue with the Battlebox is that you end up with a Decimator; it's pretty much our least-used jack. Juggernaut-Destroyer (i.e. the mk2 battlebox battelgroup) always seemed pretty excellent to me.

Juggernaut-Destroyer (i.e. the mk2 battlebox battelgroup) always seemed pretty excellent to me. Several other factions get 3 unused models. We get 1 average warcaster, 1 good warjack, and 1 meh warjack. I think if you put the battle boxes against each other, Khador should have a very very good chance of winning.

I have been murdering people with Decimators since MK III dropped. I don’t know what you guys are doing.

Yes, with one important thing I stress: the demo giver loses because he’s showing the other person how to win. With the Khador battlegroup, you might hide behind one of your jacks to keep them from shooting you, but then show the other player how to use the Slam Power Attack. (Yes, yes, you have to drop Chosen Ground first, but c’mon, demo game. You’re demonstrating the mechanics, not your superb tactical acumen.) And so on, and so forth. Seriously, I should film a “how to demo” training video...

Yeah, precisely. I'm all for people not playing battlebox if they don't find it fun, but teaching the game to someone with more than a caster/lock and a couple of jacks/beasts is not nearly as effective as building foundational understanding of the game slowly.

So my plan will be to have at least 6 Painted battlegroups of different factions. (Don’t have to be specifically the ones that came in the box. And we will have at least one table with ppl playing 50 to 75 point fully painted games for new players to look at.
The four of us that actually own models will have to get painting this month.

I find the game more fun when it's not all-out competitive and more relaxed. It must be frustrating for more experienced players as I look up rules and quadruple check stats and whatnot. But then again, I'm a terribly infrequent player, especially after my second child was born.
Hobbies? What are those? I don't even think I've set foot in a local store in almost two years. We have a table set up at home but I think it's gotten at most 4 games in 2018. I guess I could go to X-planet or something but meh. There's no real motivation for me to get curbstomped by veterans.

We're in the same boat at Heroes world. Most of us have had our fill of harcore tournaments, and just play fun games. I want to do more narrative games, too. I haven't been to X planet in a couple of years, but I'm guessing it's still super into the tourney scene?

I'd just be speculating, but that would be my guess. Last time I was there it felt like being a fresh carcass for a pack of vultures or something.
I've tried to get other people interested in the game but the curiosity just isn't there. That said, I'm still the one painting up my armies, my wife's armies and my brother-in-law's armies (when I have free time, ie. almost never). It's easier picking up and putting down a paintbrush than starting and stopping to play.
Narrative games sound cool and I wish I had the time to actually git gud. Heroes World still does Thursdays?

They do. Quite a few folks just finished Seafall and are moving on to Betrayal Legacy, but there are still a couple who play whm regularly. I'm still loving the game

It'd be nice to get in more than 6 games a year...idk, I might be able to swing by. If the heavens align correctly.
