So yesterday I had one of the most unsatisfying moments in WM/H in a LONG time.
I decided to play Kozlov with a BUNCH of Manof Wars. Kinda just to see how it went
He played Grymkin. Child. 3 S&Bs. Some Crabbits.
It is Saturday pick up day. Time to try new stuff and get in practice games. It is both our second games for the day. So I don't put his list into my kindle cause I have played 2-3 games against Child and I get most of what she does plus rather than fiddle an extra 10 minutes with warroom or try to make the dumb wifi/lobby thing work I want to play. Try to minimize Manifest destiny pain and have a good counter strike to the ARM 21 S&Bs. I am thinking. Also understand his arcana....He picked Labryth (-2 speed); Pandamonium (no orders) and Child's trump
Win roll.
Turn 1
Get my AC up the field pretty well. 2 units of shocks in front, 2 demo corps behind
He gets the idiotic swarm where they will be particularly annoying on subsequent turns. He looks to make this come down to a slug fest in his square zone which is my left flank.. We can ignore the right flank for the purpose of the discussion
Turn2
So I am feeling good with myself. Cause this is a FAST list. I know his arcana can be a pain but I am going to try to make this work.
Man of wars move up in shield wall. I thought he might trigger Pandamonium so I am going to have them take one for the mother land and layer their dead bodies. But he does not trigger.
Next demo corp get into counter strike position. Ditto Juggernaugt who will be able to get to one of the skin and bones. This is looking like a good counter strike for team khador and being set up as well as it can be. Get rid of 1-2 S&B and ride it out. I Did screw up with Dragos - who is too close to child so would get caught in the pandamonium bubble. Should have measured it but oh well. Kozlov decides to feat. I am way up the board anyway. I gave up some chip damage by using Koz. late but now I got a bunch of ARM 23 shocks in his face.
He goes ahead and kills three of the shocks with a S&B. He positions the second S&B sorta out in left field but I figure he will try to counter the counter punch with it. He has previously cast an upkeep he told me about 10 minutes ago on a crabbit (it is Discord) and leaps the crabbit by some shocks. Swarm runs b2b with jugger.
So I got this. I know the arcana will limit SOME things but I got too many threats on the board and he can't play BOTH arcana. It will either be no orders or -2 SP. Even without charging the demo corp and the Shocks can do work and then the jugger is fully loaded and ready to go. Might even hot swap fury.
First the supression tanker moves up to take out some screening dreadrots. I ask and he triggers Labryth. That means the jugger will not be in range but the demo corp (with fury) will be. That is a good thing. Means I can ignore the swarm for the moment and koz doesn't have to go forward.
I next say "Well the demo corp get the run charge order"
"Well only 2 of them do cause the others are under Wailing. The rest just sit there"
"Oh my bad. Let me activate the shocks to try to kill that crabbit"
"nope. You said demo corp."
At that point it was essentially hopeless. I could put one demo corp into one of the S&B. The next turn they would ravage all the rest of the Man of Wars off the table. It was setting up to be a good 45 minutes of "fun". I packed up.
Essentially the game was over because I spaced that he had an upkeep and what it did . About 80% of his plan hinged on me forgetting his upkeep was out and activating the demo first. Check the card probably avoid the error. My opponent was clearly within the letter of the rules (if I think a bit not in the spirit of a pick up day)
And that, in a nutshell, is the problem with this game and what will limit its growth (and probably is why PP could be having financial problems). I have played WM/H somewhere between rigorously and causually for a good 4 or 5 years. Have taken breaks but generally have tried to stay up on things. And here was at least an hour of investment (unpacking, setting up the table, paying turns 1 and 2) that came apart because of an upkeep and my opponent banking on me overlooking it and using it as a gotcha which was brutally punishing.
Sorry to Female Dog but I really hated WM/H after that.
