I love warmachine but my playing group is in decline. I have read about Vassal, an on-line way to play warmachine apparently. Does anyone know anything about it? Do many players use it? Is it endorsed by Privateer Press? I would not want to be part of a gaming system for warmachine not supported by Privateer Press as it would seem unfair to their business.

PP is not making any money off it. It’s copyright infringement.

Vassal is a pain. The UI is counter-intuitive, clumsy and slow. It's often difficult to find opponents, especially if they want to play CID or hyper-competitive skew lists and you don't, or vice versa. There are whole aspects of the game which it will not help you learn at all, like judging or measuring distance and the muscle memory of physically moving actual models. BUT- it is free and it does have its uses. It will help you to memorize the stats of your own army and its interactions, especially with armies like Menoth, Skorne, and Trollbloods that can be especially demanding when it comes to positioning and order of activations.
