Has anyone ever participated in a tournament or other game where your list pair did not have to both come from the same faction? What sort of interesting pairings could come out of a tournament that let you pair any two lists regardless of faction? Do you think it would expand the variety of lists we'd see or would everyone just pick the "best two" lists and that would be the end of it?

I haven't attended one, but the old version of Iron Gauntlet was a format like that. Personally I think it was more a thing when every faction still had their own unique identity, but that is fading as each theme force is getting more and more fleshed out.

I haven't attended one, but the old version of Iron Gauntlet was a format like that. Personally I think it was more a thing when every faction still had their own unique identity, but that is fading as each theme force is getting more and more fleshed out. I’m pretty sure I remember a large percentage of people just showed up with a Haley2/Asphyxious2 pairing, which if I remember correctly was the pairing that took it down. No, if I recall correctly, list variety was not expanded, and was in fact diminished. Everyone just looked to pair the best Caster in their faction with the best caster from another. The field was overwhelmingly Asphyxious2, Haley2, & Harbinger. Were this type of event run today, I’d imagine you’d see almost nothing but Kreuger2, Skarre1, Haley3, Anamag, Rasheth, Kolgrimma, High Reclaimer, Ossrum, Dreamer, Axis, Vlad2, Goreshade4, Maelok, and whatever people believe to be the best Crucible Guard caster, either Sylvestro or Gearhart. The diehard competitive players with numerous factions at their disposal will play two power lists from different factions, and everyone else will probably play their primary/favorite list from their primary faction and a top tier list from another faction, likely the one they think is overpowered because it’s a counter to their faction. Personally in this format I’d probably pair Skarre3 Slaughter Fleet with Kreuger2 Bones because Skarre3 is awesome & Kreuger2 Bones is the kind of spell casty Control list I wish Cryx had access to.
