Hey all,
I'm part of a journey man and need to make a decision for the next round, do I take an assimilator or a cipher? I know I want to use the theme force later when that becomes an option. What are your guys thoughts?

Ignoring the fact that's it's a journeyman league, I prefer the assimalator. It has answers for things like stealth and cover. Plus, it's faster. I always find myself wishing the walkers were just a little quicker. Getting them where they need to be had always been a challenge.

My answer is 'yes'. How far into the journeyman are you? That would make a difference. If it's early days, you're not going to see a lot of stealth (though the Cipher can also remove that), and cover isn't going to be a tremendous deal unless you have a lot of high-def beasts or warjacks. So I'd probably take the Cipher simply because it's better in melee. Plus, unless the other guy has pathfinder, Crater on the Cipher can slow him down quite a bit by dropping 2 x 4" AOEs of rough terrain on the table, somewhat mitigating it's slow speed. The real question is whether you are skewing toward a ranged game or not. In terms of damage output at range, you want the Assimilator, no question. Ground Pounder can attack a bunch of targets and POW 13 can do some damage. The Cipher can't do anything like that. At range, the Cipher is a great support piece. Dropping a rough terrain AOE around a Khador jack will slow it down considerably. If you are skewing melee, then the Cipher, for sure. The Assimilator's claw and Cipher's Piston Spike do about the same amount of damage, on average, but the Cipher has 2 of them. And on Synth's feat turn, the Cipher can use both of those then fire a Flare AOE at something else. By the end of the league, you'll want both, Assimilator up front with the Cipher as a second wave.

One assumes Syntherion because he's in a Journeyman league.

It is Syntherion for now (might switch out in week 5). Ultimately I decided to go for the ranged game which turned out for the best seeing as the meta is leaning towards light beasts and jacks. For the 25 points this week I think I'll add in another Assimilator and a bunch of eliminator servos to remove support.

A fun trick with the Cipher is that you can charge on Synth's feat, use Dual Attack to do your Flare first, at point blank range, then continue with your first melee (charge attack). Hitting with +2 (or more from Synergy) is always nice.
