I think they are worth it with Vlad2, who can be made a good Jaws caster as well. Hand of Feat and Hunter means they will hit most of the time, and Hand of Fate, Weapon Master and DEF 14 makes them a viable feat target. It’d be great if they went 2-3 points down though.

Just my take on this as somebody who basically just started the game: Whenever I lurked on this forum I always wondered why people insistantly tried to squeeze things like Nyss, Boomhowler and Co., Kayazy Assassins, Devil Doggos or Croe's into their lists. Whenever i saw that, I looked at their cards online and thought to myself... yeah these guys don't seem all that great, so what is it about them?
Know I know the answer. They are relics of the past people are still attached to.

I never actually ran Nyss all that often in their heyday, what I was trying to do, was provide bodies (ideally bodies that could shoot and hit decently hard) in an otherwise jack heavy list. The price I paid for that was inefficiency. Kayazy Assassins, are models I don't particularly like to use that often. But I'd say they're more viable than some of the other units you listed. They can form a pretty good screen in themes that lack one, and are already in faction.

But, yeah, Nyss Hunters & Boomhowler, those are relics.

Oh I am not saying all of them are equally bad. shoe apparently broke Doggos by running them with Crosse and Assassins are defiently the best of the bunch. Their popularity still seems to be more bent on nostalgica than anything else.

And yes, maybe i was too hard on Kayazy, probably because I come more from a merc perspective. In khador they actually have a nieche, especially in slow themes like AC.

It took me much longer into MKIII than I care to admit before I learned that about Boomhowler... those guys were my go-to back in MKII. *sniff* How the mighty have fallen

They are relics of the past people are still attached to. I don't think it's as much about attachment as it is about utilizing models one owns (I guess one could call that attachment). That said, I believe you are largely right, and very few mercenary choices provide the value they used to provide in Mk2, especially units. This is also the result of a conscious decision by PP to limit their presence, reflected most strongly in the fact that taking a mercenary unit usually entails a price premium in the form of forfeiting a free solo. As I mentioned before, I found Nyss Hunters to be good with Vlad2 in Wolves of Winter, but only there and only in Wolves of Winter. I would not play them anywhere else. The reason they are arguably usable here are: - they perform a similar role to the Outriders ("ranged" unit that ignores concealment and cover), while also providing better close combat capability, that also gets a significant boost from Hand of Fate and feat.
- they make one sacrifice a free solo, but Wolves of Winter solos are not necessarily good enough to warrant going for three free choices.
In other themes or other casters they are really difficult to get 23 point of value out of. I could possibly imagine them with Malakov2 or Kozlov1 with Tactical Supremacy for a 6" retreat, but don't think they fit as well into the themes those two casters are most likely to see play in. As for other viable mercenary units, Alexia and the Risen have proven viable, and Aiyanna & Holt have seen play (more due to a meta "necessity" then to people actually wanting to play them), and some people have been trying to get value out of Tactical Arcanist Corps for mini cloud walls, but that also seems more like a far shot. As there is already a limit to the number of mercenary units one can take, I'd like to see more viable options being made available though, as I enjoy painting something of a different flavour from time to time.

Very true. Don't get me wrong i still really love mercs as a faction. But the thing that annoys me the most is how ineffective it is to take actually flavourful character units that aren't Aiyana or sometimes Lynus and Edrea, which one could mean is what the faction should be all about. In reality the way to go in mercs seems to be to spam bodies. 6 heavies with Magnus2 and only the most inexpensive units to get all the advance moves. 50 bodies of steelhead halbs with Alexia. 27 Rocketmen with Ashlynn. Gunbunnies out the arse with Ossrum At least the solos are still grand, which is probably the best thing about the faction.
