Dearest new Lormahordes brethren, I've called you together here to talk about a character dear to my heart. He may not have three heads, fancy quick-work sprays, or flaming spears, but he's a workhorse, and I do love old Proteus.
Seriously though, since I've started using him, I can hardly build a melee-centric list without him as my first choice. He gets so much done, and if he survives past turn 2, he's almost always my MVP in a game.
Grappling: That reach four with drag is an amazing way to extend the threat ranges of the rest of your army too. It means he threats 14" with the trusty seraph lurking nearby him. Stick a carnivean next to him, charge something far away, drag it in and kill it, then buy the last attack to drag another thing in for the carnivean to dismantle. If Proteus and his slightly-pillowy pow 16 can't kill his initial charge target, it can still work, the positioning just has to be a bit more central between your two intended drags.
Armour: Arm 20 without spending a costly two focus? Yes please! Means you can spend that whole fury stack hitting things and dragging people by their nethers. Armour-buffing casters such as Abby2 and Thags2 beef him up to a very respectable arm 22.
Infantry clearing. Reach 4, chain strike (which everybody always forgets about) and mat 7 combines for a very handy infantry clearing machine and allows the rest of your army to strike deep if needs be. Clearing infantry isn't always so hard these days, but Proteus has it in spades.
Some casters I've found synergise the best with him:
Abby2: Her character beast, and grievous wounds is never a bad thing. An arm 22, threat 16 pow 18 missile in her feat turn if you can proc alpha hunter.
Fyanna: What doesn't she make better? He may not be def 14 and immune to KD, but the work you get from Proteus is astounding with her, and I think theres a big argument for him if you're not going RoW. Apart from the usual good stuff, overtake makes for some very interesting angles. 'Pac-Man'-ing into position to drag a warcaster out of its hidey-hole and in range of the rest of your guys is very hard to defend against. A bit like mk2 Molik Kharn. Also, stick fury on him and watch him chew through an entire unit of medium infantry or a heavy and a half.
Thagrosh 2: Great target for dragon's blood, yet again making him arm 22. It gives Thags' beasts the much-needed threat extension (as slipstream isn't often enough), and with feat, pulling the rest of your beasts out while sending Proteus and a raek or two in deeper, often buys a second alpha.
