Hey guys, I recently came back to WMH and I picked up the All in One box, the Helynna battle box, a ghost sniper, Issyria, a unit of Stormfall Archers and a Fane Guardian. I know how to use most of the models I have, but I'm stuck on how to decide when to use a Hydra or Manticore.
When would you use one over the other? They both seem very useful all of the time, but both have pretty big downsides. The Hydra gets one great shot every turn, but its melee attack blows. The Manticore can have amazing melee attacks, but the randomness of its ranged attacks adds more RNG than I think I'd like... but covering templates are good and rolling 3 attacks will always be amazing.

Okay so the main difrence in the two jacks is as follows. Manticore is a good all around warjack that ABSOLUTELY needs warcaster influences to be at its best. But ut can easily one riund other warjacks. The Hydra is a powerful gun platform that best works as a cleanup heavy (last resort) or a Jack Martialled beast. Having Focus Battery it can be fueled to 3 by archanists and not lose focus. When its melee is combined with crush and concentrate power it clocks in at a respectable p+s 19 beater who needs no Warcaster support (though you can always give it some)

With the right support, a Jack Marshalled Hydra can be an amazing workhorse. Standing close to an AFG, under Ravyn's Snipe spell, fully loaded with Focus from Arcanists, it can send up to a boostable POW 17 attack 21" downfield at RAT 7. And like onijet mentioned, with a Marshall, it's no slouch in melee either.
Manticores are a good general melee workhorse with support capabilities, but I find Hydras are extremely versatile and dangerous in the right lists.

My average battlegroup is two sphinx when allowed and one other heavy or two hydras (for focus starved casters like gorshade 4

hydras are great to just throw into any list where you have 15 points due to their focus efficiency. they can be mean in melee with jack marshals, their gun is nice to have, and their focus efficiency basically makes them free to run in terms of a caster's focus, which is great with ret's high amount of multi-upkeep casters. I use them whenever I have the points, their focus efficiency makes them versatile and very easy to run for just about any caster, especially folks like 4shade and rahn who want their focus for other things each turn. also really nice to have for our casters who can give them off-activation shots (issyria, ravyn, garryth), and having a POW 15 phantom seeker shot from kaelyssa is quite nice.
manticores are a cheap way to get to P+S 20. banshees are better for the same purpose if you have the extra 4 points to spare, which in many lists you will considering that between infantry and solos you generally are only going to have the points to run 1-3 jacks anyways. they're worth having due to being the only P+S 20 you can get in FoW lists since you can't take Vyre jacks in that theme, but overall they have the same threat range as a banshee in melee, do the same number of heavy attacks as a fully loaded banshee (unless you activate next to a helios), have a worse gun than a banshee due to the lack of special effects and RNG ROF, lack magical melee weapons, and honestly covering fire isn't that special against the infantry you want it to be good against (ARM skew, multibox).
I use hydras all the time. I only use manticores when I run FoW or I know I want a heavy but won't have the points for a banshee, another jack, and sylys/fane knight guardian.
