Thought I would post my thoughts about my matchups from the I5. People have been a bit down on Skorne lately, but I had a total blast and went 3-1, (3-0 with Zaadesh2) and had some very interesting experiences that I wanted to catalog.

List Pairing Intention: Morghoul2 was supposed to handle Mirage and Spread the Net as well as take major dude spam matchups. What ended up happening is that everyone was afraid of his feat so they didn’t drop dude spam and my turtles got to work. It ended up doing really well for me.
Round 1 – Salt Mines 2 – Circle – Krueger2 – Bones: conflictchamber.com/#c8101b_-0WgM4O4Mef5H5H5H5H5H5A5g5gbF5f2N___-0p4a4QjFjF4H4Hg4g45gfI5e5e5fi7
I dropped Morghoul2 because I was very scared of Titans getting jerked around the table and having him auto win on scenario. Also, since we were playing Spread the Net, I was fully intent on dropping Morg2 anyway because he can control that scenario pretty well if valks don’t get removed right away. I won the roll and went first and puddled up the board as much as I could, but this might have been a mistake as he took a side with 2 forests and was able to make a huge forest line with his sentry stones, totally screwing my feat over and any hopes of digging deep with my army. We even picked tables this round and I just didn’t recognize what was going to happen there.
He immediately starts getting to work with all of his army except his heavies, which he keeps in his zone, behind his battle engine. This was pretty rough since I couldn’t get mortality over there or blind them with my feat and force him to go hot with fury. Sentry stones get way too much work done and I give him really good spray lines unintentionally. Swamp horror gets some work done, but not enough to turn attrition in my favor, and I probably held my feat too long as when I finally dropped it there wasn’t much worth feating on and he had a mist speaker for his battle engine. I have been wanting a mist speaker in my list as well, but can’t fit it in without dropping a master tormentor and swapping trappers for the bellows crew again. It’s probably worth it, but it would not have helped me in this matchup since the sentry stones make forests, not clouds.
I end up losing on scenario, 1-6, pretty decisively anyway, between his feat and very well positioned sentry stones and heavies. I was very impressed by how well he played it, and he was a cool dude, as all of my opponents were. Our team ended up pulling off a really close 3-2 victory with two games being decided on clock!
Round 2 – Cryxian Super Friends – Ret – Garryth – Forges: conflictchamber.com/#c5101b_-0A46jsjsjsjs3y3y3X3X3Pmt3m3o3m3ohPdK3v___-0h180v0veP3y3y3ybHe1434L0whMhM
I have played Garryth before with Zaadesh2 and it was fine and I wasn’t worried about Ossyan either. This opponent also told me they were scared of the Morghoul2 feat and dropped Garryth for that reason, which made me very happy that opponents kept giving me things Zaadesh2 wants to see, so then I basically decided to drop turtles for the rest of the tournament, and it totally worked.
I don’t recall who won the roll off or even who went first, but he spent most of the game popping off shots and trying to ask weird questions, especially with Dahlia and Skarrath, who were the biggest pain that game. I made two big play mistakes, one putting a sentry way too far up the table and basically giving him away, and then placing a turtle out of my feat by about a quarter inch. Even so, I was able to take three of his heavies with my feat and put on a lot of scenario pressure. He put Garryth into the mix and I was able to turn him into paste with a gladiator that got very lucky on boosted attack rolls.
This was another game where I reeeeeaaallly should have used a head butt. I don’t know why I keep forgetting to make that a priority on a high def caster, but it was readily apparent that I was overfocused on the assassination dice and just didn't realize that I needed to use a power attack. I probably would have had another round of trying to kill him as no one was scoring anything, but there was no reason to let that happen.
Round 3 – Mom’s Basement – Trolls – Madrak1 – Storm of the North: conflictchamber.com/#c7101b_-0biViRiRjpiU7h0hjq2Q6R6R0l0m___-0a4N0r9Djq6G6M0l0m2NiTbKiT0b0c
I was not thrilled to try turtles into Madrak1 as it has never gone well for me in the past. I went first but it could have been bad as I was not really able to get to his flag and we were playing Recon2 so it may have gotten to be a game where he just kept scoring his flag until I lost, but it didn’t get there. He crashed a unit of champs into one turtle and the other unit wasn’t close enough to charge, so they ran up and did it the next turn. Fennblades did what they do and tried to block the center of the table.
The main thing here was that my titans were in the center and turtles on the outside. Bronzeback was just to the right of my objective and he was engaged by 4 fennblades and Madrak was very close to the center of the table, behind a forest. I cleared off the two fennblades to the left of the bronzeback with Zaadeh2 by feating and buying one attack, putting me pretty close to the front lines, so I dropped a cloud on him, standing on an edge of it so he has to land in it to hit me, then cleared the two on the right of him with a sentry. Rushed the bronzeback with a gladiator who killed one fennblade. He got zero tough checks which was a bit tilting for him. Bronzeback walked up to Madrak and punched him a bunch, boosting rolls. I got him to 4 boxes with 3 fury left and then pulled a dumb move by just buying 3 instead of boosting one and buying a final one if I needed to, just because I was afraid of him toughing a bunch. Should not have gotten greedy there because I missed all 3 shots.
I end my turn with Zaadesh within charge range of basically his whole army, but standing on the edge of a cloud so that anything that wants to land next to me has to take the -2 to hit. He charges in his mauler and I’m camping 2, he boosts and I have to transfer 2 huge hits to a sentry, then he charges fennblades who all miss and I forget my defensive strikes, but now Zaadesh2 is blocked off by fennblades, so it worked in my advantage. He charges in Madrak himself and I take a defensive strike with a sentry, but miss, and wish I didn’t waste my defensive strike with Zaadesh on the mauler that charged him. Madrak buys and can’t hit at all, even with boosting, and stands there, naked. Champs charge in across the front lines, but they all die to free strikes and fail their tough rolls. Zaadesh miraculously lives and then murders Madrak in return. Both of us are flabberghasted by what just went on.
Round 4 – As Long As We Beat Canada – Circle – Thorle1 – Bones: conflictchamber.com/#c8101b_-0pexjGjGjwjwjEjEjEjEjEg4g4g45gfF5e5e5f5f___-0p4a4QjFjF4H4Hg4g45gc9c95e5e5fi7
I felt like I was falling on a sword for my team in this matchup because none of us wanted to face Krueger2, even me, but it turned out this player was there to play Bradigus, so he dropped that and I dropped Zaadesh2 because I didn’t want to try to play the mindfu** that is Morg2 into Bones lists. He was afraid of the Morg2 feat against him anyway, so that makes 3 straight opponents that gave me better lists for Turtles to take to pound town.
I won the roll off and went first, which was a big deal as I was able to at least get into a position to toe zones. Put the BB in the middle, gladiator slightly back, titans on the very outside to be in the circle zones, and turtles flanking my center models. I got up to the back edges of the zone top of 2 and took some random shots and waited for his feat to murder. He feats and his 2 heavies each kill a turtle, while the lights do a little damage and throw up stoneform to block me in. The 2 heavies slide back and all the lights are in my face. The sentries and gladiator are untouched. I immediately feat, do some damage into one of the lights (probably should have just stayed back, but was able to block off Zaadesh with agonizers and a chef so he couldn’t get into me, and would have died from defensive strikes anyway), right sentry kills a heavy, gladiator kills the other heavy, and bronzeback kills 2 lights. He’s pretty surprised by what I was able to remove and the sentry stones are way out of position to block the rest of my army, leaving the center of the table pretty open. He tries to remedy that and block up my sentries and try to do some damage to them, but everything that’s left can’t do any damage, so his scenario play is essentially dead. He begins to panic, as he’s also about 18 minutes down on clock from me, so he commits Bradigus into one of the sentries to try to turn it around, but places poorly and he’s inside agonizer range. He can’t do any real damage (even without the agonizer it’s still bad) so he does one hit and camps. The bronzeback is already cleared off from killing his frenzy target the previous round (should have had a chef there for him to eat the previous turn, woops) and just walks up to Bradigus and murders his face after his one valid transfer target dies and rolls over back to him and I buy a final attack.
Conclusion: I felt that Skorne was in a very good place at the tournament and after Exalted CID we'll be in an even better spot. The BB update is going to be very, very welcome and I feel like titans in general are very strong in the super armor heavy meta I'm seeing right now, and even decent into medium based dude spam.
