If any WTC Troll players have any anecdotes of the weekend they want to share, feel free to help paint in the picture.
Team Austria Schwarzenegger Troll Player here.
I was pairing Kolgrima1 and Grim1 - both in Storm of the North.
I went out the WTC with 1-5, but it doesn't really feel that way for me, since two games were pretty damn close and one was lost because of a bad list-choice.
Both Lists were played exactly 3 times (not on purpose, even if it might look that way if you see me playing Grim 3x on day 1 and Kolgrima 3x on day2)
My Games:
First game was vs Geir Vedeld from Team Norway Sleipner who threw Amon/Cyrenia at me.
I was quite sure that he wouldn't throw the Cyrenia double Idrian list at me since I had Kolgrima in my pairing.
Also I was thinking that I had better chances vs. Amon with Grim (which in hindsight I don't think i have).
The bit problem (since I haven't played into Cyrenia before) that I didn't expect was her placing a rock wall each turn and therefore controlling my mountain king until he was destroyed.
So he was clearly the better player that round, therefore I lost.
Second game was vs Marco Bernasconi from Team Switzerland Chocolate who threw Gaspy3 Slayers and Denny1 Ghostfleet at me.
I took Grim1 again since he is basically my cryx drop anyway. He has never seen Grim 1 before, so knocked down Denny was shot dead bottom of 2 by 2 boosted guided Bomber Shots.
Third game was vs Mike Porter from Team Ireland Ceol who had Anamag1/Thagrosh1 (both in PT)
After some practice games with my pairing vs. Anamag I only one once with Grim and lost all the other games. Unfortunatly I got paired in something I consider one of the worst matchups. He took Anamag, I took Grim. Mike is a very good player protecting Anamag and also his Blightbringer very good. He had a very strong list and because I lost the Attrition I had to take some risks that didn't pay off, so he won.
So, after day one I was clearing the losses from my memory with some fantastic Norwegian Schnaps and had a blast with several other teams.
I was talking about the next days matchups, that I might have gotten in round 4 and was already quite sure I would play Kolgrima into team New Zealand the next day.
So, next day started for me being a little bit dizzy, but not that bad.
Round 4 I was paired into Casey Hills (Maelok1/Barnabas2) hoping he would drop Maelok since nobody here around plays Barny2, so I only knew him in theory.
"Luck" was on my side and he dropped Maelok against whom I already played at least once at the last chance qualifier for the EU Masters. I dropped Kolgrima into it.
Game went very very grindy. Both players went into danger of clocking themselves. I got ahead 3-0 and it was turn 5, so I decided to go for turn 7.
Unfortunatly he managed to kill my objective and clear my zone with a wrastler, so he scored 2. Since i wasn't able to contest we went 3-3 in the last turn with me having about 20 seconds on the clock and him 5 seconds.
In his last activation he managed to kill skaldi with a witch doctor sacrificing a void leech, therefore he won the game with (if I rememeber correctly) 39 - 45 in Army Points destroyed (3-3 CP after Turn 7) . - So very very close. Could also have been the other way round.
Round Five I got paired into Tommaso Medici from Team Italy Toad (Bradigus1/Krueger2) and didn't expect much from that matchup but was quite sure I'd like to play Kolgrima to maybe prevent getting his synergy up.
It was a pretty grindy game and I also went ahead on scenario but lost the attrition battle since I thoughtlessly offered him my Bomber. He accepted the offer teleporting a Wold Guardian and feating him into my bomber and beating him up.
Finally he went to far up with Bradigus and since deathclock started to threaten (because of me being behind on scenario as well) I decided to go for the assassionation.
He had 2 Beasts to transfer to. I killed on of the, and brought the other one down to 6HP.
I pumped a fully boosted Winter Troll POW14 (because of the Stone) Spray and two Boosted Pow. 14 SaP Kolgrima-Sprays into Bradigus.
If my math is right this should have been about 28 damage (so after the one transfer he should have had 22 damage on bradigus who has 17 boxes.)
Unfortunatly the dice-gods were not in my favour and bradigus survived with 5 boxes and killed Kolgrima the next turn.
Last and sixth round we played into another Italian Team and since nobody in my team wanted bradigus, and I was quite sure the matchup was playable to some degree I wanted revenge.
I was paired against Francesco Zapelloni who also had (Bradigus1/Krueger2) with him. His Bradigus list was a little different (which I didn't realise at first and even IF i realised it, I wouldn't have considered it a big problem).
Zap had no Woldwarden in his list, but instead was fielding 2 more Wold Watcher and a Swamp Gobber Chef.
I had an unspeakable amount of problems with this increase of armour and also problems with the Swamp Gobber Chef, that survived pretty long supported by a Wayfarer. I had to put a lot of effort into getting rid of those solos (that finally killed my bears and therfore scored anyway).
So, I am not quite sure if I lost this game on scenario or on deathclock, but I lost.
The only thing I won that game was the knowledge that little changes in lists might change a lot in a matchup
So, after all as I said i went 1-5 but games 4 and 5 could also have gone different.
I am not really satisfied, but my great team pulled me up so we finished 35th of 64.
Finally I wanted to state that I had a great weekend. I had six absolutely wonderful opponents that I would always love to play again.
Everybody thinking of visiting the WTC might be encouraged to. This year was my thirt WTC year, and it was always great.
It is so much fun how people are celebrating the event with their passion of the game, and also their friendship that is built up over the years.
