Ages ago (back in MK2 in fact), I was interested in Abby1. Something about the models just appealed to me.
However, I was told that she wasn't a good caster and (worse) was pretty boring to play, since she had little to do outside of her upkeep spells. Hence, I decided not to bother.
However, I've just seen that she's recently been given an update and now looks a lot more fun/interesting to use.
Has anyone had any experience using the new Abby?
If so, can I ask how she plays? Am I right in thinking that she's been improved, or was it just a sidegrade?
Also, if I was to start a smallish Legion army with Abby, do you have any advice on where to start? I'd like to avoid gargantuan models if possible. I also like having a ranged game, but I've no idea whether she's any good for that.

I've been playing with the Absylonia1 recently in the Children of the Dragon theme (featuring Azrael, Proteus and Zuriel), and I've been having a lot of fun. The new upkeep spell, Playing God, adds a lot of interesting permutations to managing her Spontaneous Mutations so there is more to manage than just handing out upkeeps. I have also found that her current upkeep spells provide some very different capabilities, so the warbeasts themselves can operate very differently depending on which upkeep is on them.
I have heard there is some success with Absylonia1 with the Archangel since it becomes much harder to negate her feat that way.

I've been playing her in oracle's with BB, angelius, proteus, and hex hunters.
Shadowbind paired with Blight spell really ruins warbeasts/jacks days.

Hmm, what about if you don't use the Archangel or Blightbringer?
Is she any good without them?

Hmm, what about if you don't use the Archangel or Blightbringer? Is she any good without them? She can work well with Angels, Neraphs, Carniveans... People play her with Gargantuans because she is very limited in number of beasts she can buff at once, Playing God makes gargantuans nasty and her Feat just need something to survive to work. Gargantuans can't be Grevious wounded, are hardest to kill and returning them to full health after opponent whiffed damage rolls is devastating.

Something else I should ask: Is there any overlap between warbeasts/units/solos that Abby1 wants, and ones which Abby2, the Twins and/or Fyanna want?
(I ask because those are all casters that interest me, and since I'd be playing on a budget I'd obviously prefer to get stuff that can be used by multiple casters.)

Forsaken are your best choice, all casters want them and Abby 1 gives them Ashen Viel.

Fyanna in her most standard wants fliers, Abby2 loves every warbeast out there, but she can run Carnivean chassis like no one else, both of them likes Protheus. Twins are usually played with Blight Bringer, Protector and Seraph. Actually the only beast that is seen in most lists with those three casters is Seraph. It's safe buy. As mentioned before - two Forsakens are also good pick (more like, necessary), Shepherds and Spell Martyrs. From minions side Valkyries is a must, Gremlin Swarm is very good value.

If senerio play and cost is an issue as well try the ferilguest as a 2 pt solo it takes some getting rid of like the gremlin swarms but instead of being an anti-construct model it can claim warbeasts as its host. Yes i know they are not super good but sometimes yiu get a gem of a beast. One with say rapid healing or snacking

I run Abby1 as a mixed arms list, so you can definitely play the range game with her, but unfortunately my list does require an Archangel. Her spell list just really favors a smaller, more elite battlegroup. Playing God certainly makes a Ravagore suddenly good in melee, but a SPD8 POW21/19/19 AA is hard to pass up, not to mention as others have said, he (or the BB) are immune to Grievous Wounds and therefore always get the most out of her feat. I don't think you can go full ranged with her (or really any warlocks in faction - not reliably anyway as we lack consistent and cheap spammable guns).
That said you could try to run a slower list that spams Carnivean (+ Proteus) and Angelius. Ideally the Carniveans with Spiny Growth and feat up can tank the opponent for a turn, while your Angels (no more than two) play hit and run with hot-swap Refuge, absuing terrain. Something similar could be run with Abby2 if you like to double up on purchases.
