Hey all, I just saw a YouTube editorial on the relative lack of war gaming minis and related products at Gencon (compared to say, board games). www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAFOOKaLlY0 Having attended just on Sunday this year, after a two year hiatus, I tend to agree. I recall the days where PP more emphatically showcased their new hotness at GenCon - to which I can afford to drive. They had a very visible painting competition and display presence, etc. I used to eagerly take pics of it and post to the old PP forums. Now with Lock and Load, which I will doubtful attend in the foreseeable future, partly due to its added expense (flight) and remoteness for an Ohioan, not so much. I understand why PP would want to do their own thing out in their corner of the country, that's not my main point. It may have been the Sunday-only experience this time but my point is that there seemed to be less mini wargaming stuff in general. I'm wondering what people think about the best Midwest or eastern mid-sized con with tons of minis, paints, terrain, dioramas, etc. Adepticon? Is Warmachine Weekend good for hobbyists or casual/new players? Thanks!

Completely my own opinions here and most of them are opposite side of the country for you, but my rankings for cons I’ve been to the past couple years are:
Las Vegas Open Adepticon Lock and Load Attack X Southern Ontario Open Grotscon
I haven’t been to warmachine weekend yet, but have heard nothing but good things from casual gamers to the most competitive. I will be there this year, so I’m looking to add it to the list and imagine it will be fairly high up.
I’m also looking to add the Ontario Team Championship to the list soon.
I understand these aren’t local to you necessarily, but figured it’s good info to have if you’d consider travelling.

If you don't care about size, Circle of Swords puts on a very small gaming convention in Butler Pa about twice a year. More people showing up for the Warmachine stuff would be most welcome. SIBCON is coming up in September and COSCON is usually in March.

I've never heard one bad word about Warmachine Weekend from new or seasoned players. Muse on Con gets good reviews too. Depending on your placement in Ohio some of the northern Cons like the SOO could well be within your reach too.

Adepticon would be my answer. Going to Warmachine Weekend for the first time this year so can't speak on it yet.

I have never been to Adepticon but I hear it's very expensive. From what I understand though, it is entirely wargaming. Warmachine Weekend is great and it's only a three-hour drive. It's the one convention I'm sure to go to every year, at least recently.

Nova Open is held near Washington DC and is predominately wargaming with a little bit of card gaming. They seem to have a strong following and are right near Reagan National Airport for convenience.
Pax Unplugged just started in Philadelphia last year. Privateer Press was on-site for narrative play and hobby time. This might be something to keep an eye on.

I live in central PA and am starting to travel out to different cons/gaming stores. I'm trying to compile a list of events in PA so that I can make efficient plans.

Having more recently gotten back into miniature wargaming, I'm interested in this as well. I've been attending Dragon Con in Atlanta for 26 years now, but this will be my last year. There were some miniatures games going on, but not much.
I've heard of Adepticon, but not the others.

There should be subsections for conventions, look for SIBCON or COSCON. There should be an address, and when they get the schedule together of events, it will have links as well.

This is all helpful. I've been browsing these sites for more info. Thanks for the leads. I didn't realize NOVA was that big. They don't seem to put WM/H front and center though. Still, very cool.

I've heard nothing but good things about Adepticon (have a couple of buddies that go every year). The seminars/classes can get pretty expensive pretty quick it looks like, but from what I understand there's still a lot of demo games and free play going on too.

Let me plug kingdomcon (only con I have been to but WTF). San DIego is a Great place to visit. Is NOT expensive. Lots of Warmachine (and 40K if that is your thing) going on along with a ton of board games. Drunkquest on Saturday night ;-) Good group of vendors in the vendor hall. San Diego craft beer. What more needs to be said ;-)

Because I've been to that city twice and been staggered by the amount of money I burned through both times for lodging, meals, gas, etc. Not knocking KingdomCon at all, never been, although I would like to.

Mission Valley. Crown Plaza Hotel. Right now (not sure at the con) rooms for 85 a night. OK hotel for that price. I don't find SD any different than most of CA - and cheaper than a lot of the Bay Area.
