So, I'm slowly buying into Cryx and aiming for a modest force (1 each of all the important non-jack pieces in the respective themes, a couple thralls for CoI and a handful of multi-incarnation casters for appropriate proxying etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.) that can be applied semi-competitively for SotBC, BI and DH (in that order).
For these three themes, are any Merc options worth it (aside from Cephalyx Overlords in BI)? If so/not, why (not)?

I find my merc options are more caster dependent rather than theme dependent for the most part. For example, if I have a non-occultation/non-stealth caster and don't have access to the new blood priestess satyxis attachment (as would be in SotBC), then I would want a bokur (or our shield guard heavy).
If I am not taking a debuffing caster like Denny or asphyxious, then I may want either Gorman or ragman.
If I am taking Scaverous, I often reach for Croe's Cutthroats for the TK/backstab combo.
Nyss hunters are a good ranged unit option for almost any caster that doesn't want a dedicated melee force.
Wrong eye and snap jaw pair well with scourge of the broken coast for the naturally high defense of the satyxis and their luck manipulation.
But for the most part, there isn't much that mercenary's bring that we cannot do or have a different option for in faction if you really try. None of them are what I could consider a must have.

I agree with tiberius, while we do have some interesting options, only a handful of the solos are actually useful (Ragman, Gorman, Saxon Orrik), but not essential, and hardly any of the units are a must-have, except perhaps Overlords.

Wrong-Eye and Snapjaw top my list of Mercenary additions to Cryx. Beyond the (excellent) reasons mentioned by Tiberius, they bring a Focus independent heavy that can be cranked up by a wide variety of Cryx warlocks. I like Gaspy1 in Scourge in particular, and with a model with Dark Shroud adjacent to a target with Parasite, Smapjaw can wreck most hard targets easily.

The only mercs I use regularly at the moment are Ragman & Wrong Eye.

For those who say Ragman, how do you keep him covered on the lead-up so that he can get close enough to use Death Field? As I read it, he needs to be more or less side by side with the Dark Shroud recipient(s) to advance while the attacker charges... or can you afford to be more conservative with his placement?

I have not typically had a problem keeping him alive as my opponents tend not to prioritize him. Though, I dont use him to his optimum I am sure. I typically pair him with with a slow moving group or a colossal and he remains well protected there. Of course his best use is with our faster units and that does put him in danger. But you are correct, he needs to be within 3" of his target(s) to provide dark shroud I believe.
