Krueger 2 vs Thagrosh 1Another battle report coming up. This time against Legion. My opponent had Thags1/Kallus1 both in PT that he wanted to try, and i had Morv1/Krueger2. We decided that Morv1 would be pretty favored, while Krueger probably would be a more even match up. He tried Thagrosh (and we played Kallus too later on, and i will write a report on that one too later).

He has a lot of beef, but i think my shooting and control matches up very well against his melee based list. The Blood Pack seem strong against Warmongers, though killing the BB will be... impossible? sort of? We shall see!
DeploymentI get to go first and decide to stick the Ravagers to the east, with one unit of blood pack on each side of Krueger in the middle. The beasts are behind the front lines. I placed the Well on the west to be able to shoot at anything that scores his flag (i can shoot 7+8+14=29" up the board, and the flag is centered 28" up). It is also within 4" of the objective which is super sweet!
He places his BG in the middle and one unit of warmongers to the west and two more to the east.
I place B&C to the west to threaten any hell mouth that might be there.Gallows Grove is to the east to help against the tough Ogres. He places one hellmouth back behind the forest by the west zone, more than 13" away from Caul (so much further back than he could have been). The other one is behind that rib-cage-terrain to the east (we play that as being impassable but not blocking LoS. It gives cover if you are within 1" like a wall). You might also notice a lump of rocks in the west part of the north zone. That is an obstacle (not obstruction) so you CAN stand on top of it. The rock lump on my side is an obstruction though. There is a cloud on my flag for those who cant tell what it is supposed to be hehe.
Circle T1I run up with most stuff. My Bloodpack on the west as well as B&C stay outside Hellmouth threat, so they do not go full boar. The well kills a tentacle, giving the corpse to Caul and I think the Wolf rider champion kills one each, repositioning back. The Ravagers spread out around my flag. They are inside Hellmouth threat range, but im not thinking lots of them will die from it, and a vengeance trigger would be just fine.
Legion T1He runs up with the BB (see the black proxy base) and spreads out around it. His east hellmouth tries to jam up the Ravagers, and his west just hangs back. Thagrosh is just behind the BB camping pretty much.
Circle T2Time to do some work. I decide to chance triggering vengeance on the west and east units of Ogres. I only manage to kill one guy from the west unit, and tough another. I kill both tentacles on the west hellmouth. My first plan tough was to send in B&C (by TKing them) against the Hellmouth, BUT then I did some math and the Hellmouth is effectively ARM 22 in melee. I forgot about the possibility of Divine Inspiration, but Caul is actually not very likely to kill it! As B&C are sort of my only hard hitters I do not want to send them in and have them fail and die. I chip the hellmouth with the bow of Birghid, but my plan for handling the hellmouth does not sound as good as I first thought
On the east flank I kill all the tentacles, charge in with some Ravagers, and shoot some more Ogrun with the Blood Pack. I kill the whole unit, but he does have one more unit left there… I do not feat this turn, because I do not think it will matter much, but I do get Windstorm up, pretty much only for the BB.
Legion T2He wants to shoot a nice 5” AoE against my east Blood Pack, but I inform him of Windstorm. He then makes the questionable decision of going backwards with the BB to go outside range of Windstorm. He sends in Golab first to disable Tough. He kills a bunch of ravagers and Blood pack on the east side.
On the west side he kills a couple of blood pack, but despite vengeance he cant get all Ogrest to connect, since they don’t have pathfinder for the wall. Thagrosh had actually ran back behind the forest in his zone before the BB activated because he was in the way and did not want to give me any chance of assassination.
He scores his flag and his zone, so 2-0 to Legion.
Circle T3I FINALLY manage to remember to bring in the free solo from the well. I chose a Whitemane because I want it to be able to hold his flag in the future, as well as giving vet leader to the bloodpack on that side. Between the Blood pack, Krueger, well and Goat I clear my zone. I still do not feat. I cant get to his flag with the Whitemane (no running…) but the Well shot down the spell martyr scoring it. B&C are whimps still and do not go in against the Hellmouth, though this would have been a better turn as Thagrosh was not nearby now.
On the east I kill all but one Ogre and Golab, and I contest his zone with a champion. I score that flag with my tree. In a hilarious streak of bad dice I had to kill Golab by shooting a lightning AoE at a nearby Ogre, and roll an 8 on the blast damage, but I got it hehe.
Score to 2-2.
Legion T3He uses his tentacle to contest the west zone, but despite dinging up my objective last turn, he brings it to 1 health, so no scoring there. He feats back Golab (right… he has a feat! Forgot about that) and contests my flag with his tentacle (who kills the tree too). His ogrun CA kills one ravager, but my chieftain survives. Im not sure what the BB shot, but it was probably the stalker. He also killed the champion contesting his zone. Thagrosh puts his curse thing on the stalker, making it FURY 2.
He scores his zone, so 3-2 to legion.
Circle T4This turn I decide to kill the west hellmouth. B&C goes in and fails. The Goat boosts 3 damage rolls against it and fails. The Well shoots and… does 4 points of damage to the Goat and kills Brighid… A bloodpack member charges it and… fails, and this is WITHOUT thagrosh’ aura! I run the whitemane to score his flag though.
On the east I clear my flag and the last Ogrun. I contest his zone with my Cieftain who puts some damage on Golab. THIS turn I feat with Krueger to control basically all of his things. Note that the tentacle in my zone on the pic is not there (I didn’t take the pic until after he had replaced it).
Score 5-3 to circle
Legion T4He tries to pull in Krueger with his tentacle (oops!) as well as pulling forward the stalker in to threat of Golab and the BB (double oops!) but both attacks missed. The BB walks up to contest the west flag and cripples (but doesn’t kill) the Goat. Thagrosh kills the Chieftain in his zone and Golab runs to engage my whitemane.
He scores one so 5-4 to circle
At this point my wife has thrown up enough for one night (she has some sort of super pregnancy nausea) and calls me back home to put the son to bed, so we cant finish the game.
Post game thoughtsI had a lot of fun playing the game. The Blood Pack are very good against the Ogrun, but GOD DAMNIT the Hellmouths are hard to kill. Had we continued, I would be very hard pressed to kill the BB after having expended so many recources not killing the hellmouth. I think the Stalker can be TKed and get to the BB, but he will be inside Thagroshes Aura then, and Caul has no corpses and no Brighid, so that thing isn’t going anywhere.
The Stalker can probably be TKed and charge Thagrosh, but that is not going to be enough to kill him, cause I will most likely not reach with the claw and I will have the obstruction in the way, so that is not a great plan.
Playing for attrition/scenario and a Turn 7 win is possible perhaps? Not sure at all what would happen.
If I were to play the match up again I would commit to the hellmouth earlier I think and hope to be able to win on scenario. That, or I would realize that the Ogrun do not have innate pathfinder, and I could have used the wall to the west way better, and played the shooting game. If I feat to get another turn of shooting I think attrition could look better, and I do not think I would lose on scenario. Really fun game though, and I love that I can solve parts of his list trivially, but need to really think to solve others at all. Makes for a fun match. I really recommend discussing match ups with your opponent before the game so you both feel like you have an OK shot. Playing 50/50 games are way more fun than playing the 70/30 ones imo.
Thanks for reading!
