My friends and I have been playing quite a few 0 point games to try and get the rules down. At this level I started trying my hand at Cygnar, (which i am really liking but know really nothing about). We are finally feeling confident enough to field a few more points. Now reading similar threads the advice seems to be “pick a theme and build to it”...here are the two paths I’m thinking:
Major Beth Maddox Squire Firefly Lancer Ol’ Rowdy Arlan Strangeways
Or build towards an eventual Storm Division with
Major Beth Maddox Squire Firefly Lancer Stormclad Arlan Strangeways I’d pick up repair, focus efficiency and extended control range. Or do I want to stay with BB jacks and pick up a Stormsmith? Also both my regular opponents play Hordes armies.

Welcome to the Swans! In terms of building towards a first theme, Heavy Metal would be the one I recommend.
There are two advantages to going for Heavy Metal first
1) It delays purchasing units for a particular theme force until you have a better grip on the game, and are able to make a more informed decision about what sort of play style you might like to go for
2) The warjacks in Heavy Metal can be used in every theme, so building up your stable of warjacks will give you lots of options when you branch out into other themes, and good value for money.
Quick couple of warnings
1) Do not buy Longgunners, Precursors or Sword Knights for Heavy Metal, the two former are pretty awful, and the latter average at best. Good units to get would be Mechaniks, or Trencher Mechaniks. mechanics are cheaper and better at repair, but Trencher mechanics are more durable and can re-load Grenadier warjacks if you were inclined to buy them. they are also fairly cheap money wise.
2) Not sure if you know this already but character warjacks can only be taken in a theme with the caster they have a bond with (Triumph in Gravediggers is the exception to this), so Ol'Rowdy cannot be played with Maddox in any theme. I would go for more non-character jacks to start, and then once you find a catser you like, maybe consider getting the character jack

Or do I want to stay with BB jacks and pick up a Stormsmith? Also both my regular opponents play Hordes armies. What model do you already own? I would take the Stormclad instead of Ol'Rowdy with Maddox, due to the bond you cannot combine both in any theme. And Maddox counts as a Storm knight herself for the free Focus. Also you should concider getting Striker 1 with the old Battle Box (if you can get it for "cheaper than Striker and a Charger") if you already own Rowdy. I would build for Heavy Metal and then slowly add Storm Division models (Storm Lances, Storm Blades). If you can get Sword Knights for cheap I would get them, otherwise playing Maddox in HM is not very efficient. Squire, Journeyman Warcaster and Strangeways are very good choices and are available almost in every theme. The Sotrmstrider Batttle Engine is also available in Both themes and also very good. The most important thing is: Play games. If you are new it's not so important to have theperfect list, but to understand the tools at your deposal and then slowly grow the list. The feedback here can help you avoid "wrong purchases", but nothing is truly useless in Warmachine. The players skill is much more important that using just the best models. And even Sub-par models can shine in the right list building context.

Agreeing with Cygnar-guy and Snoozer here. Heavy Metal without Character Jacks is where you want to start. A unit of Mechanics is an easy (cheap points and cost wise) to score a zone after your Jacks have bullied the table for you. And the jacks are good in any theme.
As for new advice, don't purchase more than 2 of a jack until you feel comfortable with running 75 point games frequently. You will see spam lists on the internet, but it will not help you at this point in growing your collection.
