So what exactly is the fluff for these models? Are they basically people that love to inflict pain on themselves?
I ask because I see them as one of the few units we have with no good place. Is there ever a good reason to run them? I've got two fully painted units just staring at me and then at the rest of DoA, bitter at their lack of role and inflated point cost.

I used to run them back in mk2. They really need help getting up the field. So morg3 can stealth them and nareesh can give blur. Aside from that they are kinda meh and I wouldn't really run em

Like bloodrunners, I desperately want to run them with non-Paingiver warlocks. Unlike bloodrunners, I don't think they pull enough weight to be worth it.

They are single prey type infantry missing targets in the meta, and now post Tough change in MKIII are basically undeliverable.
Lots of us had two units of them in MKII, now they are just inferior infantry options. There's been a lot a speculative fix threads in the past (you can dig through the stacks to find them), but there's a general consensus right now that they need significant improvement in order to see table time now.

in mk2 tough was a big deal and berserk was a big deal once you got there. Chain revive on these guys was good also. In mk3 the issues are numerous. 1) All units are priced assuming you get a discount for your theme but frogs outpace the nihilators in every category. 2) The theme they are in puts them with limited casters and only morg3 really wants them as honestly nareesh doesn't fit into the theme well to begin with because he wants a big battlegroup and if you are going to put blur on a unit, bloodrunners are probably better 3) Tough just doesn't matter as much and def 13 is not as good as it used to be 4) pow 12 isn't good enough by itself to crack the number of jacks mk3 brings and mortality works better with shooting units 5) seriously Most of the time DoA would rather run minion shooting units
They basically suffered greatly between mk2 and mk3 because they were skornes beast unit. Themes then put them with casters that don't synergize with them very well. The gator CID put the final nails in their coffin as the units they are competing with are just better now
