I have been wanting to start doing battle reports and documenting my play for a while now, and switching to minions has re-invigorated my excitement for playing warmachine and all aspects of the hobby. Hopefully this will help me think through my lists and get a better understanding of the faction. I do not have pictures for this first tournament, but I will start doing those soon.
So for my first battle report, I went to the 4th annual Ticket Take Down in Portland. This is a tournament they hold to give away a ticket to lock and load. Held in a pizza party style place, so we had pizza and beer on hand to complement the tourney, which is a great way to do these kind of events.
My list were:
Minion Army - 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Will Work for Food
(Rask 1) Rask [+27]
- Blackhide Wrastler [16]
- Boneswarm [7]
- Bull Snapper [5]
- Swamp Horror [15]
- Gatorman Soul Slave [0(5)]
Dahlia Hallyr [17]
Feralgeist [2]
Gatorman Husk [3]
Gatorman Husk [3]
Kwaak Slickspine & Gub, Croak Sorcerers [0(4)]
Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress [4]
Totem Hunter [0(6)]
Wrong Eye [17]
Boil Master & Spirit Cauldron [5]
Farrow Valkyries [8]
Minion Army - 75 / 75 points
[Theme] Will Work for Food
(Barnabas 2) Barnabas, Lord of Blood [+23]
- Blackhide Wrastler [16]
- Boneswarm [7]
- Bull Snapper [5]
- Swamp Horror [15]
Bog Trog Mist Speaker [4]
Dahlia Hallyr [17]
Kwaak Slickspine & Gub, Croak Sorcerers [4]
Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor [0(5)]
Thrullg [0(5)]
Totem Hunter [0(6)]
Wrong Eye [17]
Boil Master & Spirit Cauldron [5]
Farrow Bone Grinders (max) [8]
Rask to handle armor and gunlines, Barny to handle dudes and whatever Rask doesn't play into. I don't own everything in minions yet, so it's built off of my small but growing collection.

Game 1 vs Legion: Rhyas 2x Throne and Thagrosh 2 beast brick. Both are Oracles, so Rask is the drop. I get Rhyas, which I was a little surprised by, but the assassination threat is real. Scenario is Barbell.
Rhyas 1
Succubus
Scythean
Scythean
Seraph
Naga Nightlurker
Bloodseer
2x Throne
2x Forsaken
Sorceress and Hellion
Ice Witches
Round 1: He goes first, forest in the middle for LOS blocking terrain. I take the side that gives me the better of it. I deploy both lesser warlocks on one flank, as they work well in tandem, boneswarm and swamp horror on the other side. Everything else in the middle. Both husks ambush. He runs up, throne on each flank and beasts in the middle. I run stuff up, stuff generally out of charge range, except for Snapjaw, who has enliven.
Round2: I out threat, and he doesn't have LOS to too much cause of the forest, so he kills the jamming husk, positions for scenario scoring and to try and force me to give him the alpha. My turn the husk ambushes in the throne's butt to start the damage. Swamp horror finishes it off, clearing the right zone for the valks to move up and score. Feralgeist and snapjaw with enliven and admontion (yes i later remembered admonition is battlegroup only) contest the middle zone, everything else positions to alpha. Rask pops feat.
Round 3: He can't do much under feat. Manages to slip stream a scythean to the swamp horror, kills it. Tries to get snapjaw, but between feat and elnliven and admonition snapjaw survivies. So some unintentional cheating on my part unfortunately. Don't think it changes the outcome of the game because the sorceress failed to kill the feralgeist. And enliven means snapjaw lives regardless. Everything else durdles. I send the valks into the right scythean, put some damage on it. Boneswarm goes after bloodseer, fails to kill. On the left Skarath finally goes in, kills seraph and paralyzes left throne. Snapjaw gets buffed up and launched at left scythean, killing it. No scoring. Feralgeist and sorceress slap fight but don't do anything.
Round 4: Scythean kills some valks, one toughs. Couple forsaken blight bombs stacked up damage on snapjaw and killed boneswarm. Bloodseer doesn't do much. Rhyas kills snapjaw, throne damages skarath but he enlivens away. My turn i finish the bloodseer with the wrastler, skarath paralyzes and damages rhyas. kwaak tries to spray her but flubs dice rolls. I tihnk i kill the scythean this turn? Hard to remeber. We start running low on clock. so the last few turns get quick.
Rounds 5-7: Skarath dies, and there is some contesting and piece trading, dahlia holds down the left zone with Haunting Melody, bull snapper kills sorceress. I manage to score the right zone once more, and I am up on clock. He essesntially has to let it go to round 7 or he clocks. I win on scenario 2-0. Tight game.

Game 2 vs Menoth: Vindictus Knights Exemplar theme and Sevvy 1. Not sure what to drop here, but I don’t like rask in weapon master spam, so I drop Barny. I get Vindictus in return.
Scenario is Recon II. There is a house in the middle between the 2 objectives that is relevant. I go first.
Vindictus
Revelator
3x Knights Exemplar & UA
Rhoven & Co
2x annoying seneschal that doesn’t die and heals when you kill other dudes around him
Gravus
Can’t remember the rest/wasn’t relevant
Round 1: Super friends in tandem to hold right zone and score my flag. Skarath on inside to get both Execration and star-crossed. Barny in the middle, everything else pushing towards the left. I run up. He deploys colossal towards the right zone, 2 units on left, one unit and rhoven on the right. Runs up and feats to deliver his army. He also flubs an attack on thrullg behind the house.
Round 2: Well I can’t do much. Can’t rebuke this turn, so just re-position barny behind the house on the opposite side of the colossal, angling towards left zone. Totem hunter leaps, kills a couple, sprints back to execration range. Swamp horror clears off thrullg and positions in front of barny. On the right, wrong eye moves on to the flag, snapjaw toes the back corner of the zone out of threat range submerged. Skarath is parked in a trench, sprays a seneschal and KE, kills both. Boneswarm camps behind the house for cover. I score my flag.
Round 3: Wrongeye and Snapjaw continue to hang out, scoring and waiting. Snake moves up, sprays, counterblast. Boneswarm charges, kills a couple, overtakes and jams. On the left, more knights exemplar die, seneschal is knocked down, and I stay bricked up under ExBN. He gets some charges off on the left, but not enough because I rebuked a unit and totem hunter and thrullg live due to ExBN. Crucially, he charges his left seneschal off the flag. On the right, he durdles with the KE and kills the boneswarm since they aren’t in charge range. Revelator shoots at enlivened wrestler, allowing him to move into charge range of revelator and objective.
Round 4: I am winning the attrition fight on the left, and he has positioned too defensively, so I see a scenario play. I clear off the right flag so I score there. I clear a bunch of KE on the left, totem hunter kills and sprints to his flag, barny charges into the left zone, grievous wounding the seneschal so he will die. Wrastler charges the objective. I go to 5-0 on scenario, and the game ends.
My opponent was too defensive, and him feating turn 1 means his defensive play did not allow him to counter-punch properly. I controlled threat ranges and did not give the revelator any good targets, and houses in the middle generally make colossals sad. The revelator is probably not a good fit with that list.

Game 3 vs Convergence: I get Aaron, a very good player on this year’s WTC team. He is running Orion and Axis double TEP. The game clearly is Rask vs Axis. Scenario is Pit II. He wins roll-off and goes first.
Axis Corollary Cipher Diffuser 2x Inverter 2x TEP Some other stuff and a bucket load of bots
Round 1: He runs everything up. He is well positioned to alpha strike, and I cannot hide from the TEPs. I try to run up in a somewhat defensive manner, trying to save the feat. This is a huge mistake. I leave Rask in 17’’ of both TEPs.
Round 2: He goes for the assassination, and should have killed me, but a couple failed rolls mean I live. However Axis has feated on me, so I cannot retaliate well. I can get the swamp horror and boneswarm on one tep, which might save me. I forget about counter-charge, the swamp horror moves to the tep, and gets double charged, knocking out sprit. It still manages to put some damage into the tep and one of the inverters. I feat, disrupt one inverter with rask, but cannot get in fury range of the boneswarm. It has rage and 3 corpses. It walks to the tep, flubs rolls, and leaves it on one box. Skarath walks to the other inverter and dices it into the ground.
Round 3: He has 2 teps and an inverter that is disrupted but can still receive iron aggression (boosted melee attack rolls) in range. Inverter knocks me down, tep sprays, and rask dies.
I made a serious misplay by not feating turn one. I also could have positioned better, but trying to avoid TEP sprays is incredibly hard. This matchup is hugely swingy based on who goes first. We both have strong control feats, and threat a strong alpha. Aaron is an extremely good player, and you cannot afford to make such a serious mistake against that caliber of player in this match-up.

Game 4 vs Cygnar: He has Siege 2 grave-diggers and Stryker 2 storm division. I feel comfortable with rask into both, so I drop rask. I get Stryker 2 since he doesn’t want to play grave-diggers into rask. In hindsight, having Rask may be enough to ward off him choosing the gun-line, and I can drop barny, who is fine against melee cygnar (rebuked storm guys are sad). But rask is the safe drop.
Stryker 2
Stormwall
Storm Strider
Max Lances
Stormblade Boat
Laddermore
3x Stormcallers
Strangeways
An unconventional list, more combined arms. Interesting in certain match-ups, however Rask feels fine against this more combined arms approach. He lets me go first, which is probably a mistake. Scenario is Standoff.
Round 1: I save the husks to ambush, and run everything up pretty much max range. Totem Hunter preyed the lances. He moves up conservatively, keeping the lances too far back, afraid of totem hunter. Stormblades in front of the stormwall. There is a house and a forest funneling him on that side. He also mini-feated the stormblades.
Round 2: I am in range to put the swamp horror B2B on the charge with the storm strider. Boneswarm gets full corpses, goes into stormblades, jamming and killing 2 or 3. Swamp horror gets the full buff treatment (hunter’s mark, rage, fury, boundless charge) and easily smashes the storm strider. Over takes towards the forest and his objective. Husks ambush, one into the back of the lances, the other into a storm caller. Rask feated. He can’t do much, stays defensive, does not contest the right zone much because of terrain and boneswarm, does not kill the swamp horror. Lances turn around to deal with husk, husk sprays one to death before it dies. We each score our rectangle zones.
Round 3: I upkeep fury, put the swamp horror into the objective, kill it and a stormblade. Kwaak positioned very aggressively under feat, and walks up and mudfoots the stormblades, then sprays a couple. Snapjaw goes to contesting stormblade, clears the zone and overtakes away from stormwall. Valks run into right zone to score, also shield-guarding kwaak. Pot also positions to score right zone. Skarath mistakenly moves up to spray a lance, misses, counterblast. Wrastler gets admonition, positions behind veil of mists to charge stormwall after it kills snapjaw. He durdles with the stormblades, they are half gone at this point. They kill a valk I think. Stryker overloads, positive charge on stormwall, charges swamp horror, doesn’t quite kill it, feats. Lances charge skarath, I forget about counterblast, and he is mostly dead. Feat attacks kill skarath, and he repoes into my rectangle. I am up 2 on scenario, nobody scores this turn.
Round 4: Losing skarath is bad, but I can scenario him. Wrastler gets fully buffed, charges and one rounds stormwall (no arcane shield in the list). Bullsnapper and lanyssa kill a lance. Totem Hunter kills another, sprints into his rectangle. Dahlia runs into “suck it” range of the lances, contesting left circle. Feralgeist positions to contest his rectangle if totem hunter dies. I clear my rectangle. I score2, and he has a hard choice. Stryker either has to kill the wrastler, or totem hunter. He kills the wrastler, and does some other stuff, but fails to contest the right zone and I score again, going 7-2 to win on scenario.
Losing skarath was a mistake that almost cost me, but going first and my feat and threat range enable strong scenario play if my opponent does not want to accept a strong alpha.
Overall thoughts: The lists are coming together. I did not get a second chance to test barny into 9 slayers, but I am much happier with how his list feels. Not sure how I feel about the double husk in Rask. They are ok, jam well, and enable scenario play on fast scoring scenarios . However, since it’s not generally my infantry drop, there aren’t a lot of juicy targets for them to jam into, my opponents play around them well enough to avoid cloud creation LOS issues. I will leave them in for now, but I feel like I have 8 points between them and the feralgeist to refine depending on what I want it to drop into. They feel much stronger if I need to play him into grave diggers. Other than that, it is so nice to have a list that just says nope to gunlines pretty well.
Thanks Gaston for the dojo help with Barny. Will probably try out the turtle tech as soon as I own one but the swamp horror feels good there. Chain weapon and over-take mean it does credible work in most games. It’s tough enough to kill that it’s a good piece trade initiator. WWFF fixes it’s problems for the most part, 12” run first turn gets it where it needs to be.

Is the Thrullg available in this theme? I've been seeing lists popping up recently running one, but some even run two of them. I'm also surprised you don't have any Gremlin Swarms in either of your lists. Is there a reason other than you don't own them yet? I'm not saying you need to go out and buy them now, I'm just curious why you don't have any when they are so popular these days.
EDIT: Went back and saw I missed one Thrullg in your Barney list (now I want to see Barnabis painted like Barney). Either way, is it an option you would consider instead of the Husks?

I own one gremlin swarm. i like them, and i have gone back and forth whether i want one or not. I really depends on the match-ups i expect to see. Sometimes a husk will be better, sometimes a gremlin swarm. Part of it is i think husks are better when you take multiple. But there are certainly match-ups where the gremlin swarm would be a better option.
