Disregarding Ice Pirates, because reasons I guess;
I actually liked Pandorum a lot more than I expected I would if you haven't seen that. Event Horizon is a good horror/sci fi. I have yet to see Blade Runner 2 because Marc Bernardin spoiled the movie on a podcast and took all the excitement of seeing the movie right out of me.
Sci-fi as a genre has been in a bad place for a long time. You might get a good movie now and again, but Hollywood is lazy and would rather rehash old tropes and cater to the lowest common denominator. What was the one with the little slimy Venom-symbiote monster just outside earth's orbit? That one looked interesting. Prometheus was garbage with stunning visuals. I would really like to see them do a less CGI/effects movie and just tell a good story on the "cheap". Enjoyed Thor:Ragnarok, I am unimpressed by both Guardians movies (I know I'm the minority). I think good sci-fi is in the same place as good westerns, few and far between and only done well by people that have a real passion for the genre.

Seen the trailer for "Mortal Engines"? I HOPE that will be good; I've heard good things about the book it's based on, and the setup has a lot of potential.

It is actualy a thing I've been wondering for some time - with so much money available (for all those SFX and top star actors and amazing filming techniques) why can't the s-f genre afford more decent scriptwriters.

My understand is that it's less about affording anyone (I heard they paid 3 million dollars for the script to "Snow White" - the one with Thor in it, and that's, well, bloody Snow White!), and more about studios being risk-averse. Why try something new and risk failure, when you can just do the same thing that already worked? Of course that kinda defeats the purpose of sci-fi. Also, it might have something to do with the fact that films are such a combined effort of a great many individuals, that a strong and singular vision is harder to achieve because not everyone will be on the same page? I think you need someone with both vision and clout to pull off something really creative and new these days, at least on the big screen. I honestly think there's a lot of good stuff that I at least don't hear about because I'm not "plugged in" when it comes to small indy films etc. I'm hearing about a lot more of this stuff ever since I started reading BirthMoviesDeath by the way, but even if you hear about smaller films it's not always easy to actually get to see them. Especially when you're busy painting little toy soldiers all the time (well, that and playing Overwatch).

If you want some quick Netflix shows to watch I cannot stop raving about Altered Carbon. It was a book trilogy first( of course ) but it is extremely well written and had me on the edge of my overly comfortable computer chair to the end. The Expanse is another book to tv show but its getting ready to start its 3rd season. I watched the first three episodes, looked great! Just can't keep the wife interested, so I'm waiting for a day I can watch it when she isn't using the TV.

The Expanse she found really dry and boring....but she isn't a nerd so what does her opinion matter! -hides in man cave-

We liked last year's Passengers, it was a nice surprise (as we didn't expect much).

This week i saw anihalation (sp?) On netflix. Really cool s/f movie with a good cast (natalie portman and jennifer jason leigh) about going into an area that was affected by a comet that landed on that area. The characters are good and their motivations while kinda cliche make for a good movie. The movie has some comparisons to a lovecraft story that are well merited.

Altered Carbon was good as a show, but amazing as a book. They changed a good bit for the onscreen version.
Trying to think of less mainstream scifi movies. How about
PREDESTINATION: A serious mind-firetruck.
FREQUENCY: Decent time travel film
If you're looking for television as well, my all-time favorites are:
-Fringe: Season one was not good. After that, seriously good. -The 4400: Feels very X-Men, and I love how the plot twists season to season -Orphan Black: I stopped watching after maybe season 3 or 4, but the first three seasons were so good -Farscape: Not sure how well it's aged, but great characters and great humor if you can stand the muppets
