Hello all. I wanted to get community opinions on free points in infantry based themes like Ravens and Primal Terrors. When designing a list, I usually try to make as clear cut a list as I possibly can. What I mean by this is having exactly X amount of points of infantry. So, it would look something like this: Blighted Ogrun Warspears + UA (20), Blighted Ogrun Warmongers + (free) Gorag (13), and min rotwings (7). Or, Raptors (18), Blightblades (10), and Grotesque Raiders (12).
Point being, whatever combination of models is as clean cut as it can possibly be. Because, I want warbeasts.
However, in a theme like Oracles, I can spam warbeasts without a care, and get maximum free points.
So, how do you approach themes with free points that derive from warrior models? Does it bother you to not have a clean number? (As a side note, Warmongers with Gorag equalling out to 19 points is infuriating). Or have you found that having extra points of warrior models doesn't intrude on design space? (As another side note, any suggestions for accomplishing a clean amount of points in a Ravens gunline, while still keeping the Raiders?)

So by "clean" you mean "an even multiple of the free points number"?
Raiders, banshees, striders, hellmouth = 40 Max raiders + min raiders = 20 2 x min raiders, raptors, hellmouth = 40 Raiders, 2 x min raptors, hellmouh = 40

I personally don't care. My kallus1 primal terrors list spends 73 points on infantry for 3 free solos. My lylyth3 oracles list spends 67 points on beasts and battle engines for two free solos. I bring the models that I think work best for the list I want then worry about how many free models there are. If you focus on only multiples of 20 then you're restricting your options.

I always consider what the lists goal is in game and then continue to iterate on models included until it feels right and then I play it to see. I want to maximize effectiveness then free points/models. Once built I look at models and consider what else does the primary job I want it to do and if I swap things around now how does it look. Generally I'm wanting to get at least a couple of the theme bonuses (free points or abilities) else why am I in theme.

I don't particularly care if the points are not perfectly optimized. It's far more important that the infantry I'm taking contribute meaningfully to the list. If they are just there to generate free points, you're going to have a bad list because they aren't worth what you're getting if you're putting a free solo over list synergy.
Obviously it's nice to get as close to it as possible, but I won't for example, pick a unit I have less synergy with in order to match the point bracket when I can instead take something that matches the list better and be over or under by a point.

Double Raptors, Double Hellmouth, Max Raiders = 60 points.
You can also run: Raptors, Double hellmouth, Max Raiders, Min Raiders and blightblades = 60 points.
The perfect 60 point combo's are a bit dull. They are also surprisingly important - because those last 15 points have to buy you important Solos (Hellion?) and minions and extra beast points - we need every beast point when we have so few.

I've tried running the 13 point options. (Banshee's and Strider Scounts + UA and they are very annoying.)
